  1. This always seemed like a good song to me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuuIs8qKl5I *edit: found a slightly easier to see version
  2. It's raising money for ALS (a nerve disorder I believe, in which you slowly lose function until you die). You get nominated to pour a bucket of ice water on yourself or donate to the foundation ( they say 'or' but everyone usually does both he challenge and donation) and then nominate 3 others to do it as well. It's raised a lot of money very quickly. Just asking for donations probably wouldn't have worked as well, but people love a good dare. *according to the website ALSA.org, ALS is "Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's Disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed."
  3. Ah! Okie doke, no problem C: As far as design goes, I like it. The colors aren't too crazy, and go well together. I like the bit of fluffiness you added to the chest. The cutie mark doesn't look too complicated either. I don't know the personality or backstory yet, but so far you are doing really well!
  4. If there was supposed to be a picture or link, it's not showing.
  5. So cute! I love her little ghosty neckhole thing!
  6. The Prince of Egypt. I loved it as a kid, and love it even more now. One thing I did not appreciate enough as a kid is that holy wow the characters are all actually BROWN. Thank you Dreamworks for not making them white and vaguely english like everyone else does.
  7. That is one thing I find a little off in mlp, not that they can really help it. Many ponies' names have a lot to do with the talent they possess or their cutie mark (obviously for marketing reasons and to make them more identifiable in the show). At some points it's pretty predictable. Oh, your name's Luna? I just wonder what you'll end up doing. Yeah, no clue there at all. It would make more sense if they didn't get their matching/themed name until they got a cutie mark, or if some ponies got a name change later in life to match their talent. Eh, it would make more sense, but not necessarily a better idea/practice.
  8. One thing we must remember is that a cutie mark does not appear until the pony realizes that a certain thing is their special talent. For example, Twist (in the episode Call of the Cutie) was already great at making sweets. She didn't get her cutie mark until she considered that it was her special talent. One does not just get a cutie mark and become coerced to perform the tasks related to it- they got the mark because it's already something they do and love to do. I find I also disagree with your comments relating the cutie mark as a drug to the ponies, and that it can cause a 'high' and withdrawal as well. People get satisfaction from doing the things they love, and want to continue to do those things because they enjoy it. It's called intrinsic motivation. Of course, there is also extrinsic motivation (motivation outside of oneself, ie rewards or acceptance) due to the societal views of a cutie mark. There's no doubt about that. Because your cutie mark is supposed to represent your special talent- the thing you do better than anyone else and have a deep passion for- there are expectations on what a person does with theirs occupation-wise and such. I think most of the ponies' breakdowns are because they are supposed to be experts at what they do (or at least on their way there). Since these are their special talents, they expect to automatically be great at them all the time. When it doesn't go that way, they can get defensive, aggressive, or have a personal crisis. Pinky's upset when another party pony comes to town because she doesn't want to be one-upped, and at another time has a breakdown when she believes that her friends don't want to party with her. Fluttershy doesn't instantly connect with the critters at the gala. Their talents have worked for them all the time up til then, so it's understandable that they can't handle it when the one thing they excel at above all others all the time fails. And it's a crushing blow to their self esteem to fail at your calling. Forgive the analogy, but it's like a spoiled child getting denied what they want for the first time in their life. They don't know how to react other than negatively, explosively even. I don't think the cutie marks have some sort of dark power over ponies, but rather that the treatment and lifestyle of those with cutie marks relies too heavily on them and notion that their talent will always work in every circumstance.
  9. It actually sounds like a pretty interesting idea. Personally, I like it sometimes when they change up the dynamics- if fanfic was meant to adhere to canon, there'd be a lot less of it around.
  10. Hooked on a Feeling by Blue Swede (Guardians of the Galaxy has such an addicting soundtrack)
  11. I guess this doesn't really count since it's a book, but Lord of the Flies messed me up, and that's usually assigned for middle school aged kids to read. It's pretty graphic, with the kids' deaths and their torture of that pig. Eugh,a classic, but nightmarish.
  12. I think the standards are always changing. Back in the '80s, a PG rated movie could show breasts (multiple times, whether it's the actresses baring themselves or just pictures/posters on the set) and be completely acceptable. We may just be moving into a time where excessive gore and violence is deemed not as much of a big deal. There are kids who watch or play things far above their 'maturity level' even when they're not supposed to,so most people probably figure it's not worth censoring as much anymore.
  13. I like the animation style of G4, but I wish they would have incorporated more stuff from G1 (all the different pony types, etc) but hopefully they might do that in G5 when it comes around
  14. Pony's name: Squeaky Clean (my userame is Solecistic Miss) pose: Awkward greeting references: http://solecisticmiss.deviantart.com/art/Germaphobe-476129991 http://i1370.photobucket.com/albums/ag247/solecisticmiss/71f165cc-e15f-42aa-9c56-b42fe60fdcee.png cutie mark is a shiny whistle: *For some reason you have to refresh the deviantart link to get it to work, but I promise it's there
  15. Great advice! I'll definitely keep that in mind C: I wanted to work in something about her speech issues (from my username, 'solecistic'/ a 'solecism' means an error in grammar or speech) but I'm having a hard time finding a term that fits well as a name
  16. I'm pretty interested in voice acting. I'm just getting ready for dorm move-in, but once I get settled into school and such I'd love to give it a try!

Once you get a spot open, could you add my OC Squeaky Clean to the list? I whipped up something quick on pony creator for reference: and her cutie mark is a shiny whistle, both to symbolize her leadership skills and her cleanliness ("clean as a whistle") Bio info: Her special talent is getting things in order, both in a cleaning sense and being able to take leadership roles. She has become a bit of a germophobe. Inside her own home, she is fine because she keeps it tidy and knows it is clean, but when she is outside of it, she gets very uncomfortable to the point of constantly flying to keep herself from touching the ground. Despite this, she isn't a rude or mean pony- her personal problems don't keep her from being kind to others. There's no sad/tragic backstory to why she is like this, she just tends to overthink things and worry, and slowly reached this point of extreme over time. In contrast, that tendency to overthink is also what added to her good leadership skills. She knows how to make things efficient and where best to place people in order to get things done. I hope that wasn't too much info or not enough of the right sort. Let me know if there's anything else you need to know.
  18. Danny is definitely my favorite- I always love his stories and we share the trait of VERY Jewish hair. Favorite story though, hands down, is the D club story. 2nd favorite is every one of Danny's Jewish stories.
  19. The John Carter movie. It got such awful reviews in the theater, but my family and I absolutely love it. I mean, it explained why certain things happened, showed instead of telling a good deal of the time, and had a great plot/twist. I just don't know what people didn't like about it D:
  20. I have my ponysona mostly figured out, but I can't think of a name for the life of me (which is ridiculous, because I can figure out regular oc names in a snap). So I'm gonna give some info on her and anyone who has ideas, feel free to please pitch in and help me brainstorm! This is the only drawing I have of her so far. It's a little messy, but I liked the chalky/watercolor contrast it had when I was doing it so I kept it that way. Now on to the info: Species: Earth Pony Cutie mark: brain with a keyhole (symbolizes my love of psychology and 'unlocking' the secrets of the mind) Talent: knowledge of psychology/analysis Personality: Like me, she's smart, but not exactly...bright. She can be pretty slow on the uptake at times, quite forgetful, and gets tongue-tied when she tries to speak. She is really passionate about learning though, especially if it involves psychology and philosophy. Other: she wears bandage wraps on her back hooves. As an earth pony she is on her feet constantly, and I have the misfortune of having the worst ankles so she has to share my pain. If you need any other info, just ask and I will gladly give it. Otherwise, if you have any ideas for a name, please share!
  21. Aw, thank you everypony! So many nice people here C:
  22. I like drawing my own ponies, but the Pony Creator is a great way to find the colors you want (and to see if they go together) and to get a general sense of what you want. As I am scanner-less for now, I have to rely on it to get a quick and easy avvie until I can unearth my tablet and get drawing myself. But there's nothing wrong with using it as a starting point and building off of it.
  23. One of the OCs I'm working on is pretty neurotic. She cleans a lot and is a bit of a germaphobe, which gets in the way of her interaction with others at times. So the song I picked for her is Runs in the Family by Amanda Palmer. Trying not to be a downer with this song, but it just fits really well.
  24. Thanks, both of you! I'm sure I'll really enjoy it here C:
