So my brother walks in, tells me metal's gay, and walks out. He comes back 5 minutes later and tells me that he likes that one album that I was listening to earlier today, which happens to be The Discovery by Born of Osiris, and tells me to play it while we play Halo.

[Abstract 832]

Most metalcore out there these days is a disgrace. However, there are a few bands out there who get it right. My personal favorite of that particular genre, "Parkway Drive" with their newest album "Atlas". This song is a favorite of mine off of it, mostly because of the environmental theme present in the lyrics, but it's got a fantastic balance of melody and heaviness to it as well.

 

 

Honestly, I don't have nearly the time or patience to read through this entire thread, but I'm curious to know; what exactly do y'all define as "metal"? I've heard plenty completely trash metalcore and similar genre's, but they can't give a real reason as to why they won't consider it metal. I myself prefer a little bit of heavier stuff (think melodic death metal), but I do give credit where credit is due in regards to how proficiently a band can blend together beautiful harmonies and brutal riffs and make a great piece of music. All in all, clearly there is no correct answer, just personal opinion. That said however, I am interested to hear those of this wonderful community on the subject.

I usually consider A LOT of songs as metal, but that's because I can't be bothered to tell the difference between the genres of metal.

 

I don't know what it's called, I just know the sound it makes when I mosh to it.

Interesting list. Good to see some Ne Obliviscaris and Whitechapel up there; two bands I am really enjoying. I'm gonna have to check out some of those other bands on there (Slice the Cake, Krallice,). Heard of 'em, but never gave them a serious listen.

What's errbody's opinion? Seems like majority of people dislike the vocals, but I don't mind them, they sound over produced at times, but his voice is a bit reminiscent of James LaBrie, which isn't band thing at all, 'cause I love Dream Theater.

Good Kid M.A.A.D City? Niiiiice. By the way, have I told you about the band Hop Along? Amazing post-hardcore fronted by a female singer. Well, I guess post-hardcore. Maybe indie-rock. Point is, it's great.

I love these guys, and am amazed that I haven't posted them yet (I don't think I have at least).

ENTRY LEVEL PROGRESSIVE

At a point, it's hard to tell if metal is progressive, because it's so god damn experimental. You can't even be sure it's metal. My biggest example would have to be drone metal, like Sunn O))).

These guys have been coming up on my last.fm metal radio. Nothing really heavy; sorta lighter prog metal, but I do love the power guitars on this particular track. They feature a bunch of guest vocalists, all from obscure bands, sooo... yeah. Good tunes, imo.
