Why do you like Luna?

The Fortunato

Recommended Posts

1. Design - I think she has the best overal design out of all the ponies. I mean her color scheme is gorgeous, and her smaller form compared to Celestia makes her all the more cuter, IMO.

2. Personality - Her awkward and somewhat backward personality hits a strong curve with many bronies, and I can sorta relate. She is my 2nd favorite character after all.

3. Backstory -  The story of the fallen angel, now seeking to repent for her sins. She easily has one of the most interesting backstories of any characters.

4. Interactions - She's been a guide to the CMC, a friendship lesson for Twilight, a point of confrontation with Celestia, etc. Her interactions are generally very interesting.

5. Fanon - You can count this or not, but I generally like some of the various fan interpretations of her. They can help shape ones view of the character.

(Am I starting to have a best pone and join the notorious Luna Fan Club?)

Yes. Yes you are:  :comeatus: http://mlpforums.com/topic/53477-luna-fan-club/

Lauren Faust originally intended both Celestia and Luna to be queens but Hasbro wanted them to be called princesses because there is the long held trope thanks in large part to Disney of evil queens and good princesses. It is a completely stupid reason if you ask me but it is the reason why Celestia and Luna are called princesses even though they are queens/demi goddesses.

I mean, Princess Celestia and Princess Luna sound much better than Queen Celestia and Queen Luna. I just always had to wonder why princesses were ruling and there was no mention of a full-ruler. (I still have the same question about Adam/Beast in Beauty and the Beast because he's a prince, but there's no mention of who he answers to etc.)

Freaking stereotypes ruin everything!

=================================================================================

Luna earnestly desires to be loved by those she is charged with and makes her interactions with them personal. She's not afraid to talk about her past mistakes and uses them as a teaching tool for the fillies she helps along the way.

OMG when did we get all of these new smileys?!?!?! :wau:  I haven't clicked the button for a while...!

Wait a minute, did you change the thread Fortunado?

As to the question, I'm a bit of a sucker for characters with a "Fallen Hero" backstory and Luna fits that role perfectly.

Also a sucker for good stories in general.

  • I really like she helped the CMC in their dreams
  • Night > Day
  • The episodes where she appeared were all amazing: Luna Eclipsed, Sleepless in Ponyville, For Whom...

...Aye, I bloody hate that word. =_=

I agree this word is overrated.

well i loved Nightmare Moon from the start, didnt really join the Luna fandom when she turned back, but when Nightmare Night came around, damn! It was mostly the character design that grabbed me, it was awesome to see such a dark looking pony for the first time. I just love the whole Princess of the NIght thing too. Always had a thing for somewhat evil or potentially evil characters.

I like her because I see her as a sympathetic character whose work and accomplishment were always being overlooked by everyone in favor of her big sister.

And then when she snaps she gets punished for it for a thousand years, returns and even after being purified by the Elements, everyone not only fears and hates her, but there is an entire holiday centered around what a monster she was.

Despite all of this, she still goes out of her way to help those who demonized her.

(Plus, I'm kind of a sucker for redemption stories.)

Look before you Luna fans attack me, Im not here to hate on Princess Luna. I am here to simply talk about something I dont quite understand.

For the fan extends of Luna she is one of the most badass characters ever, but in show she is purely a Princess with a decent character and not much to her. I love Luna, I really do, but in the same way I love Cadence. They are good for occasional appearences, but not in the series nearly enough to be considered "best pony" Example: Someone I know has A lot of pictures of MLP on his computer, not a ton but a decent number, they are all of princess Luna, every single one. And I have met and seen a lot of people with this strange love for her, so does anyone else here agree with me? Is Luna simply an entertaining side pony that is great to see now and then? Or for those that love her so much, Why do you? are you combining her fandom extensions with her cannon personality, or is it something different, something more???

but not in the series nearly enough to be considered "best pony"

For some that is more than enough.

so does anyone else here agree with me?

As a person that studies literary fiction throughout the ages, I cannot say that I do agree.

Is Luna simply an entertaining side pony that is great to see now and then?

For some that could be a valid reason, for others ... no.

Or for those that love her so much, Why do you?

While I do not consider Luna Best Pony, she is my favorite of the three Princesses not named Twilight. The reasons for this are many. I suppose the perfect analogy would be 'The Kid' in The Stand. Not fully realized in Narrative, but with just enough to allow the reader to create more based on established canon. Since I fundamentally believe in the collaborative process of all art (it is not wholly owned by the creator), it is up to the individual to take from that which they put in.

That is why Luna is such a beloved character, the specifics are up to the individual.

Luna & Zecora are my 2 favorite minor characters.  For Luna, she is the most relatable Princess.  Celestia is wise & good, but she comes off more as a mother figure.  Cadence, not enough personality development.

Luna, it's episode 30 Luna Eclipsed.  She started off by going crazy because she had no friends.  Then, she tries so hard to make more, she is so bad at it, everything conspires against her & she couldn't make a friend if her life depended on it.  Bronies can relate to that.

Plus, Season 4 "For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils", she has cool dream powers & Celestia never does anything that cool.

You want a mystery? Ask why Trixie is loved & Zecora isn't.

My polytheistic mind likes to see that the princesses are gods. My polytheistic mind also likes to see that everypony else are also gods, in the respect that everypony represents an aspect of life :P Celestia is about sun and vitality while her counterpart, Luna, is about the moon and rest/sleep. I don't think we stop to appreciate the night as much as we do the day.

For Luna, she is the most relatable Princess.

I agree with this. Celestia is perfect. She has no real flaws that come to mind. And Cadence is just, Cadence. She's flat. Luna has problems, though, that we can relate to. Like you guys said, she had to live in the shadow of her greater, older sister. She's able to get jealous, she has trouble fitting in.

I think that for a show that's all about bright, colorful ponies, Luna is a good contrast.

I also like her because she's like an omnipresent being- monitoring everypony's dreams. I love onmipresentness :3

Luna is a very interesting character to me. She holds dominion over something that is often automatically associated with villainy and evil, full of negative energy, and not something Equestrian society would hold in very high regard. She probably was viewed as some sort of myth to the rest of Equestria, a mysterious force that reigned over the land when darkness fell and everypony was asleep and absent, and thus their lack of understanding made them frightened. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of late night society in Equestria outside of special events, so I'd actually imagine that there were quite a few who were completely unaware of her existence; to many, Celestia was basically the sole face of Equestrian rule, and she was treated with respect, reverence and most of all: love. But because of fate and her duty, Luna was treated with a mixture of indifference, superstition and fear, and as we seen this made her bitter and resentful.

That isolation and separation from her fellow pony is what appeals to me though, she was forever to be the underdog, the dark horse if you will, stuck under her older sister's shadow. She was given minimal appreciation for doing more or less the exact same duties as Celestia, simply because of inconvenient timing and her lack of interaction with daily life. Her transformation into Nightmare Moon, though misguided and fueled by revenge, was basically her trying to change that, reverse the roles so that everypony would live in a world full of what she ruled over: Darkness. The world that they were never around for, unable to understand and realize it could be just as good as what they knew. I think really she just wanted to be appreciated and loved just like her big sister, to be accepted, to show the world that there was no need for her to be feared and treated with scorn.

Honestly, her situation is quite relatable to me and i'm sure many others on here. It's easy to feel discriminated against in modern popular culture, especially when you hold values and idea's that are not "the norm" of society. Mass Media controls much of what people believe and think in these days, and if you try and go against what they say, your often treated as an 'idiot' or a 'freak'. They don't want to know what it is about you, they don't care to understand, they more often then not just refuse to listen to anything that goes on outside their own little ponds. School is a sad example of this, it can be very rough for a young person to try be anything other then what the majority of folks believe in, I went through it having to deal with more then my share of bullies and naysayers, most kids just seem to lack any sense maturity and acceptance towards anything that hasn't been drilled into their heads, and at that stage in their life they should really be trying to take in as much as possible. It's a challenge so many kids are forced to go through, but I feel the one's that stick it out and stay true to themselves end up coming out far stronger then those who just compromised and joined the sheep.

Erk.. so I kinda went off on a tangent there...   but bottom line, I like Luna for what she represents: the less appreciated, but just as good sides to life. I actually see her as just as strong as her sister, perhaps more so mentally because of what she went through. There are things she sees and knows that many ponies do not, because they don't take the time to appreciate the parts of life that are hidden in the shadows.

That, and she's got the best looks of any pony in Equestria. :comeatus:

Well, that's easy. She's pretty easy to relate to.Unlike the other 3 loyalties.Unlike Twilight, she isn't smart.I mean, she is smart, but...Twilight does sums like...Uh...(Too complicated for me to even  ask!)Unlike, Cadence, she doesn't have a happily ever after. In fact, she turned into villain that threatened her village. Why?Because she was jealous of Celestia and how the ponies played in her say and slept in her night.So...She's like lonely and the easier of normal people to relate to.Ya' know...I mean, Twilight really smart.Really smart.Cadence has her fairy tale life.Celestia is practically a God.

I think this answer might be taken. No?Sorry, didn't really read...

Well I like her design, both Season 1 and Season 2-5 versions. I also like her magical abilities, from raising the moon to communicating with other ponies via dreams.

But unfortunately, I can't say I'm too crazy over Luna. While I do like some aspects of her personality (her wise side and her love of children), I don't really like other aspects about her (her "feel sorry for me" attitude). Because of her personality, it is hard for me whether to like Luna or to hate her. I also don't like her backstory that much. Not only do I dislike it when stories write strained sibling relationships that are shallow and unrealistic, but the fact that Luna hasn't let go of her past until Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep makes her less relatable and more of a whiner. I would've expected her to be over it by Season 3, but nope. Or maybe I'm just reading too deep into this.

I can see why other people might like Luna, though. She isn't relatable to me, but I'm sure that there are many people who relate to her struggles.

Reasons Why I love Luna

- Was a villain turned good.

- Her story, her personality is amazing

- She doesn't get as much recognition as Celestia does.

- Raises the moon, Pony of the Night, was foretold in a prophecy that came true. (I love prophecies)

-Her color sheme

-Her interaction with other characters, bottomline is I love her character, she and Twilight are the best Alicorns in my opinion.

I like Luna because every single aspect of her (except being a magical alicorn princess) is exactly like me. My true self is supressed by my fear of hurting the people I love.

I also LOVE Luna because as a character, she has so much potential.

I think they maybe should do another movie where the other beings of Discord's race escape and Luna has to merge her dark powers and light good powers to defeat them and she ends up, potentially, as big and more powerful than Celestia.

IDK, just I relate to her so much and being a secret Luna fangirl just helps with the issues I have with myself.

I hope this explanation helps you understand more why some people prefur Princess Luna. ;) xx

Her different perspective on life is interesting to ponder. She questions why things aren’t a certain way anymore and it’s fascinating to see her adjust to modern life and throw her own versions of things in the mix.

I also like her blue and purple colors. Her mane especially since it looks like a galaxy.
