The OTHER Brohoof

Okay, so I figure that the "brohoof" is meant to function much like a, well...  "Like" on other sites.  A show of approval, kinship, or what have you.  Even a sort-of "upvote" for which there does not exist an opposite within the bounds of this site.  But what if there WAS a selectable opposite?  Not something overtly negative or disapproving, per se...  Just something along the lines of, Idunno...  A "sarcastic brohoof?"  Because I'm almost certain I've gotten those - under the guise of the ordinary "brohoof."  If sarcastic brohoof is too much, perhaps just an "unenthusiastic" or "half-hearted" brohoof.  Because it's not always easy to tell where others stand when you've got a whopping one way of responding to their post (short of replying which not everyone does).  And I've personally made the conscious decision to NOT brohoof I post I partly liked or agreed with because I disagreed with the rest of it.  A half-hearted brohoof would've been perfect for that - and convenient.  It's possible that someone else might have a better name for the OTHER brohoof / not-quite-downvote equivalent.

The whole thing sounds rather unnecessary to me. If you don't particularly like or dislike something, you should probably just move on rather than adding buttons for every reaction to a post.

I supported the "half-hearted" brohoof,however i agree a new name will be need to be officially selected.   

 

I also would like to propose a form of brohoof to relay the feeling of possible disprovement of a post,perhaps to stave possible quotes and 'X has mentioned you in recent posts' moments..i would call this new form of brohoof a "Brogoof".  

A "Brogoof" is meant to relay in short,this sort of feeling:

 

Perhaps not a 'grr i hate your post' per say,but perhaps a way to just generally disagree with a post with further inflammation of the topic at hand. 

Now,while im sure one would not like to have how many "Brogoofs" one has received in a topic on display,perhaps a feature that allows one to hide the "Brogoofs" they have received,the person who sent the "Brogoof" would still get their point across whilst the receiver of the "Brogoof" in question can still save face.

See, I get where you're coming from and kinda agree, but I also still like the idea of a brohoof alternative.  So your post is precisely why we should have one.

I like just having one "Brohoof" option. If I dislike someone's post or disagree with their opinion, I'm going to explain why instead of simply giving it a downvote.

There are times when I wish I could specify between a "this was a smart post brohoof" and "this was a funny post brohoof", but the post creator should know. The brohoof is a compliment when you're too lazy to actually compliment someone, and as long as someone knows that I liked their post, that's fine with me.

I think it's best to explain why you kind of agree than simply giving a downvote. You've also got to consider abuse of this button, which there surely would be. I can't imagine boohoof (or brogoof, whatever) abuse being terrible, but it's still worth including in this halfhearted argument.

If you disagree with something someone said, say something. What's the point in downvoting/brohoofing-part-of-a-post-but-not-all-because-of-this-thing-you-said-here if the post creator won't know what your talking about? I think it's simpler to just explain why you disagreed with them, or partly agreed, or whatever. I often just ignore the parts of posts that I disagree with, or say something like "I agree with you except for this thing you said here."

Brohoofs are meant (as far as I know) to applaud witty, intelligent or otherwise enjoyable posts without spamming the forum with posts like "This! ^" and "That was really funny/smart of you to say and I agree in every which way also the only reason I am posting today is to tell you your post was better than okay." If you're going to have a reputation vote button as specific as "I kind of liked this but there were some parts that I disagreed with still it was a pretty good post overall and/or I didn't like this except for one part that I did agree with", you're probably going to also want to create a separate post explaining what parts you liked, or at the very least what parts you didn't. A boohoof seems kind of redundant.

To me, this sounds like an unnecessary feature, and I disagree with it.

To me, a brohoof is like a thumbs up, and I'll use it if I like someone's ideas, or if they are similar to that of my own opinions, I'll do it if the user's post made me laugh or interests me in some way.

 

I don't think it's quite fair to "half-like" what someone is saying, it's kind of like how there is no "dislike" option. If you don't agree with what someone is saying, then just don't brohoof it. Seems simple enough if you ask me.

That and it just seems to complicate everything. I think the brohoof system is fine how it is.

Yeah I can see why and how most people would just wanna leave a "dislike" button out. Brohoofs are kinda like "Like" buttons, if you didn't like something you would reply with a reasonable objection or rather just read the next post below it. But I like the brohoof button, I brohoof a lot of people that I agree with or that make me laugh or at least smile. So just like the others said, is pretty much of what I think, but I don't really reply to posts unless I'm really into the thread itself. At times I just skip to the last page and read from there.

This is an idea that on the surface sounds good, until you anti-brohoof a topic and the person in question takes it the wrong way. This might fall squarely under rule, 'if a feature may add dissent between users ... do you really want the feature added?'

I personally don't like the idea. It really can only serve to create problems and contributes little good to the forums as a whole. I'll tell you right now, if that became a feature, I'd be down-voting everything said about Rarity that wasn't good

Yeeeah, this can only lead to drama. Even if it isn't a strict "dislike", I guarantee you somebody would end up getting butthurt about it. Even more are going to feel bad that people hated their post.

Also a very cogent point. If you disagree with something and want to add to the conversation, use your words. Since there is no 'downvote' or 'dislike' option, it encourages further discussion on the topic. Adding to what I said earlier, 'upvoting and 'downvoting' are also not equal in how they can be perceived. For example, when I receive a broohoof from a user it is appreciated, but rarely do I wonder exactly why user liked my post. The issue with 'downvoting' is that a person WILL try and spend time figuring out the motivation of the disapproval. Was it a poorly laid out argument, personal bias, bias against the topic, did I annoy them elsewhere ... etc?

I used to use a forum for a Garry's mod server. It was called "Lemon punch". Here were some of the feedback buttons: "Swagalicious", "Lemonicious", "Agree", "Disagree", Funny", "Informative", "Friendly", "Useful", "Optimistic", "Artistic". I'm going to have to agree with @@Jeric, I think "bro-hoof" (like) is enough for a forum as large as this, especially since we are encouraged to voice our opinions and thoughts.

Yeah, having a button that even hints at disapproval would put this community's social fabric at risk of getting ripped apart in months. I don't know how divided this community is already but adding such a button could easily split the community into entrenched warring factions pretty much. People simply do not take kindly to feeling excluded or looked down upon and may take extreme measures to either cope with or fix that problem. 

 

I'm pretty sure the staff has enough problems with users getting out of control for feeling unwanted, spited, or looked down on after getting a warning or a ban even though the action taken against them is nothing personal.

In addition to everything stated by these members, the staff in general will not be creating any kind of alternate "brohoof" that even hints at negativity. Its already been considered in the past and was always met with overwhelming responses that equated to "no".
