This is what I do.

Before I press a button, I'd ask Diamond Tiara if she PINKIE promises that she will change her ways. If she accepts the promise then I will just press the red button with a stick. Knowing how the pinkie promise works, Diamond Tiara will have to change or she will suffer greater consequences from the hooves of Pinkamena Diane Pie.

Red button for me. I don't care I wouldn't remember anything later. At the time I'd know what I'd be doing. I'd still do it even if she wasn't promising to change.

For dumb, self-important fics about mythology, ponies and fascist griffons that can't figure friendship out.

And I'm just getting started.

I may hate DT with a burning passion, but nobody deserves to die unless undeniable proof says otherwise. Use left hand to push the red button and i'll get a Nasod hand like this.

Red. She's annoying but she hasn't done anything that means she deserves to die. Plus I know that if were in her place I would hope that someone would push the button for me, so that means I would have to do it to uphold the Golden Rule.

Even though I heavily dislike Diamond Tiara, I would press the red button but giver her serious consequences if she didn't change her ways. I just couldn't bring myself to letting her fall of the cliff. Like others have said, couldn't I just press the button with a stick?

I would press the red button without a moment of hesitation in real life, because I'm not that kind of person. In the fictional safe setting described by the OP, I would still press the red button since Scootaloo is one of my favorite characters on the show. Chew on that reason. :D

Red, obviously! I don't care how annoying she is -- she doesn't deserve to die! Also, I don't have to worry about my hand, because I'll throw something at the button instead of actually touching it.

Yikes, 16 votes...

I'd push the red button. I would be the better person in the situation whether or not she changed her attitude. Justice is slow, so she'll get her bad karma eventually (or never if the universe is a douchebag).

The 18 people who would press the yellow button are immoral.

It would mean that they are directly responsible for DT's Death. It would make you a murderer. DT never killed anyone, she is just a spoiled rich kid brat that just doesn't know any better.

Not to mention, you just murdered a CHILD.

Red button to save her it is.

I'm not sure for the purposes of this intellectual exercise if it should be seen as that simple. If so the OP would have not included the memory wipe if the immoral decision was made and personal loss if the moral decision was made. It would have been simpler to just say red means she lives, and yellow means she dies.

It is meant to explore some great societal constructs like strength of conviction, personal filter, as well how guilt effects our decision making process.

Not quite Sophie's Choice, but it's in the same neighborhood.

It's never quite so black and white, there are just as many legitimate reasons to press the yellow button as there are red. For instance, imagine two different scenarios for the people that chose red.

Path 1: After you save Diamond Tiara, she holds true to her promise. She becomes your friend, a valued member of society, and a better mare in general. She also reconciles with the CMC, even becoming a member and helping others find their cause in life.

Path 2: You save Diamond Tiara, only to realize she lied to you, and has learned absolutely nothing from this experience. Eventually, you come to find out that both Applebloom and Scootaloo eventually committed suicide through her actions, and that Sweetie Belle was left mentally damaged beyond fixing.

In path 1, you just completely changed a life, and altered countless more for good. Obviously, red was the best option, and the people that picked yellow were wrong. But what about path 2? Those that pushed the yellow button just saved the lives of three fillies, (potentially more) who have nothing but good hearts and bright futures. In an attempt to be morally correct, those who pushed red sacrificed three lives to save someone who may not have been worth it(but that's for them to judge).

Were the people who pushed the yellow button thinking about it that way? Maybe, maybe not. But the point is, the choice you make is a reflection of yourself and your views on the world. There are no wrong answers here, only a chance to think about who you are.

I didn't really make this one, because Sophie's Choice eventually comes down to a coin flip(or close to one; at least, that's the basic idea). I want people to really think about what choices they make here.

Geez! I'm absolutely shocked at this moral dilemma! (Pun intended)

But in all seriousness, I wouldn't be able to handle anything to do with having someone's death on my conscience knowing I could have prevented it. Considering Diamond Tiara is a sentient being, it makes it even more clear.

Just because someone is a jerk, it doesn't mean you should deny them the privilege of life, regardless of whether or not they'll change their ways.

Being a bully and a snob is no reason to condemn someone. I would push the red button.

(Why couldn't I push the red button with a stick?)

Because it's a sticky situation?  :toldya:

Guys...

Her dad is rich.

His name is literally Filthy Rich.

You could be the hero who saved a bratty little girl from the Dastardly Dr. Spike at great personal risk... and was then rewarded with more money than you could count in a lifetime.

That... and sticks and rocks are also a thing. Neither of which conducts electricity.

Consider that fact before you even consider pushing the yellow button.

"It's okay, guys. I'm about 50% sure this random little girl I just pushed off a cliff was totally going to be the next Hitler. Shit, did you see her picking on her classmates? The writing was on the wall. If you ask me, I'm a god damn hero."

I'd throw my shoe or some sort of object at the red button. I hate DT and doubt she would even change, but I wouldn't be able to just let her die.

This is true only if you ascribe to consequentialism, i.e. the consequences of an action determine whether it is moral or not. I don't think holding that position is untenable, I just tend not to hold it myself, mostly because it's never possible to ultimately predict the final result. For example, killing 1 person to save 10 sounds good, but what if one of those ten people who was saved turns out to kill hundreds of people? You have to keep reevaluating the original decision as events unfold, which just seems unwise to me.

Besides which, I could argue that the consequences in path 2 make Diamond Tiara's decisions immoral, not the original decision of mine to save her. I would press the red button, and save a life. Her choices after that are her choices. Free will, and all that.

Heck, I would even press the red button if Trixie were in the same position.

I must say, I thought at first that most people would vote to kill DT. I'm very glad I was wrong!

Well, its different from my point of view, but it was the best way to show two differing opinions here. I assume most people here made the decision they did because they think its the best option.

You certainly thought it out more than at least a couple of people, though. I do agree that DT's actions shouldn't have a bearing on how you feel, but quite a few people would still feel really bad if path 2 happened. It's just part of being human.
