Regarding Ted Anderson - IDW Comics

My fellow Bronies and My Little Pony Fans, this morning I just got word of the behavior of one of the writers of the My Little Pony Comics, Ted Anderson, and how he is enabling anti-fan and discriminatory behavior. Today I will be organizing an open letter campaign to IDW and will stop purchasing any comics under their brand. I encourage everyone who reads this thread to do the same. The choice is yours.

To Bobby Curnow,

For quite a while I've bought, read and enjoyed the comics under the IDW brand. I am writing this letter to address the behavior of one the writers of the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Comics Ted Anderson. On the morning of September 26th I had received word that in the background of the My Little Pony 2014 Annual he had inserted two fan made characters made by bloggers David McGuire and Cutosphere. The issue with this is what these two characters represent. David McGuire has been known make anti-fan artwork and Cutosphere has not only done the same but has openly called for discrimination and violence against men. By inserting characters made by these two people he is promoting and supporting their behavior and fans who are buying this comic with two anti-fan characters in it have every right to be upset by this.

I was wondering whether to keep buying the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Comics or not after this debacle but when you said you were going to handle it and when Anderson just wrote the blog off as satirical, which there is no evidence of by the way, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and keep buying. Then I saw a post made by Ted Anderson today that was rather disturbing. Today, he made a post that flat out said that there can be no such thing as sexism against the male gender nor is there such thing as racism against people who are Caucasian. He didn't just stop at that he went on to say that any action against people who are Caucasion Males is justified as an act of revolution. So what your employee is essentially saying is that it's okay to act aggressively towards people as long they are male and white because they didn't have it as bad as everyone else in history. What he's saying is that it's okay to turn the tables on these groups instead of aiming for equality. That it's okay to punish people based on the actions for their ancestors, something the people of today couldn't even help if they wanted to. He's saying is that these two groups should have LESS rights than all other groups to even things out. It's not reverse discrimination it's "revolutionary". Is it really?

Mr. Anderson can dress this up anyway he likes but bigotry is bigotry no matter what way he tries to justify it. To say I'm disgusted, is an understatement. Do keep in mind that as an employee of IDW he is representing the entire company and by letting him say these things publicly without any repercussions, he is making it look like the entire company is okay with this behavior. So until the appropriate action is taken I have decided not to buy not only the My Little Pony Friendship is Magic comics but anything under the IDW brand. Transformers, Doctor Who, Star Trek, The Crow, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, anything with your band on it, I will stop purchasing and I will encourage others to do the same. So I ask you, Mr Curnow, is it worth losing many customers over the actions of one employee? Think about it.

This guy is a dick, dude. However, boycotts rarely end well, and I have not heard of this until now. Do you have any proof of his abusive behavior? The anti-fan OC's don't really mean anything to me; so he added in two OC's from two bloggers he likes but happen to be massive jerkfaces, BIG FREAKIN' DEAL.

If I was Hasbro I'd just can him out of him being a sheer liability. There is already alot of legality issues when it comes to putting OC's in official works, and with the politically charged nature of this OC, Ted has just proven that he is a liability to the financial success of the comic, and of IDW and Hasbro. Despite whether or not you agree with the rather vile messages that the blog puts out, you have to agree that as a company they should not allow such liabilities to work for them.

I would encourage those displeased with his actions to no longer purchase the comics done or worked on by Ted. The best way to show a capitalist company you are displeased is to not buy any of their stuff.

Say what you will about the man and his views, but I'll still be supporting the comics. I don't agree with him at all, don't get me wrong, but by boycotting the comics we'll likely be hurting those who have nothing to do with him.

Really, the rage is misdirected. Honestly, the comics are more than just Ted himself. One mans views does not reflect the comic at all.

Companies are only successful as long as people keep buying their products. Look at Capcom in the past generation they did things that pissed off fans of their franchises and gamers alike. People stopped buying their games because of it and now Capcom is close to being bankrupt. If you are going to piss of your fans time and time again then that's the deserved outcome. If you want your company to stay afloat then don't make an enemy out of the customer.

Wow, I don't even read the comics and this just sounds really stupid. Also, saying the work is just satirical? Just because something is satirical, doesn't automatically make it good. It's just a cheap blanket to hide from criticism.

Also, upon reading what the two people featured in the comics posted, how did they get in there? They wrote some of the cruelest bull crap ever.

This could've probably all been blown over really fast if it weren't for the fact that he then goes and claims that there's no such thing as sexism against males or racism against whites. That sounds like stuff I would hear those Tumblr SJW's say. Which by the way, is also utter bull crap. Just because it's not as common, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

As for boycotting the comics, I don't even read them in the first place.

I'm not going to be boycotting the comics because I'm a big fan, for the most part. I like most of the people that work on them. That said, I do intend to not buy any of them penned by Anderson. I realize that there are other people that work on it too, but it makes me really uncomfortable to pay for something made by a guy who supports the hatred of the community that I'm in, a community that means a lot to me.

Yeah, but it's not like this is a regular thing that IDW does. If they keep slipping offensive crap in then it's probably time to take action, but this is a one time thing that slipped by the editors.

Fair enough, but it makes me uneasy to indirectly harm people who also worked hard on comic that weren't Ted. I get your point, but I can't entirely agree with it. Like you I'm a fan, so I'll continue in my support, no offense. :)

He crossed the line big time. Considering Lauren is against that kind of feminist and wrote a character at their expense in PPG, it's a slap in the face to promote someone like that in a comic based on her creations. It's also spitting in the face of Bonnie Zachary because she intended her creations to be enjoyed by everyone, not just women and girls.

That being said, I won't boycott because I'm really OCD about collecting all the comics and it would hurt other staff as well.

And the whole thing could be solved really easily. Demote Ted back to working as office bitch for his fuck up and becoming a political liability, and simply remove the OC from all digital and new printed issues. I would be really surprised if Hasbro didn't take some action, as having a political liability around like that is bad for business, just look at donald sterling.

True, but it doesn't reflect well on the company to have an artist that publicly airs hateful views(against part of their own fandom, no less) on staff, even if he's just an artist.

For future reference, one of his co-workers gave DD/Cuteosphere a tongue lashing for her hateful and ignorant bullshit, so I see some staff conflicts arising from this:

Heather is cool, I've seen her defend bronies often. I think she did the color for the comic in question, I hope she isn't getting any flak for it.

Alright, after reading some of the responses, yeah I guess that it's a little unreasonable to boycott the entire company for the actions of this one writer, especially if this is only one instance in one team. I still won't be buying anything with Anderson's name on it though! Looking at this incident to continue supporting him would be giving him the means to turn into another Frank Miller.

If Tim is the one that did the art for the NMR arc, he's not that good and I rather have the dude from the first comic arc back.

Honestly, I'd can't really get behind that since there's other people on staff and Breckel(who is awesome) often works on the same books as him.

It really depends if Breckel works with other writers. Contrary to popular belief comic writers or artists don't get payed based on how many sales the book gets, that money goes to the company. The artists and writers only get payed for the work they put in and that's it. The boycott would be to draw attention to the problem and if they find out that a comic is losing sales because of one writer, there's a good chance that writer is done. It helps if the fans draw attention to that writer.

I don't think he's a writer, I think he's an artist.
