Regarding Ted Anderson - IDW Comics

The Coffee Pony

For the question: Will I buy the new issue?

NOPE!

Mainly because I buy my comics in volumes! Because this way I can get an entire arc cheaper than if I went out and bought all the comics individually. That and Trade-Paperbacks and Hardcovers are more durable than single issues.

I'm not sure if they'll release volumes of special issues like that and the annuals, but yeah, it's far cheaper and easier to find whole volumes than individual issues. Barnes n' Nobles has all of them most of the time

Boycotting the entire comic industry because 1 guy within the company decided to voice his opinion? Love And Tolerate comes to mind...

One book from one publisher(and only issues with a certain name attached at that) is far from "boycotting the entire industry".

So... New Ted Anderson comic, are you guys going to get it?

img-3330746-1-1.jpg

Nahh. I don't want to get anything from IDW unless Rarity is prominent. Like, main character type thing, but even then I'm a bit nervous because they're kind of lackluster in writing her at times. I basically don't want to support people who allow their writers to insult the people who pay their paychecks in such f'd up ways, though, and I don't pirate anything. Ted Anderson or not, I kinda don't want to give them my money after that whole ordeal.

Interesting.....thoughts on this?

Please don't tell me he didn't turn the comic into a author-tract against his imaginary legion of internet boogymen.

Ummm, are we connecting that moment to the controversy?

I made no such connection. Seems innocent to me.

It's a bad pun?

I just got done reading the comic and it seems to have nothing to do with Ted and this whole Dragon Dicks scandal.

Thank God, that pun/name made me brace for it.

If what one commenter on Horse News had said, comics usually have a 6-8 months period where the story is made, edits are done, and other last minute changes are made before the actual release of the comic. Surely it didn't had to deal with Dragon Dicks, but the fact he made anonymous and the whole anonymity online as villains in the comic will surely rub people the wrong way. Frankly, those issues are among the least problematic as apparently the EQG winter issue is considered among the worst MLP comics IDW has released.

anonymity CAN breed assholes(just look at the comments on something like a Horse-News article where image board types tend to loiter around) but it's not complete hellspawn the mainstream media likes to paint it as.

I personally love it as I enjoy hearing all groups converging and stating their opinions without fear of getting reprisal for it. I enjoy the melting pot of chaos then the stale stew of order.

Until people start voicing opinions that make you wish you didn't live on the same planet as them.

There are times that make me wish for how could they have formed such vile opinions, but frankly if every opinion was something I liked, I would be bored and unchallenged in my view for how the world is and how people could view such opinions.

So the amorphous mass of "Anonymous" can have it's collective feelings hurt? Weird. Anonymity on the internet has bred some incredibly fucked up and downright sociopathic behavior. In a story about cyber-bullying it seems really appropriate that an "Anona-miss" user is the one posting people's embarrassing dark secrets.

I sort of figured the turn around time would be too great for this to relate to the DD thing, but everyone seemed convinced otherwise.

I'm still kind of up in the air if I like the issue or not. I think it had a good message, but it seemed to have a little too much of that "In a very special episode..." type thing going.

And Anonymity has also bred some great individual and group actions that have generally helped people like of how 4chan helped the FBI shutdown a child pornography ring, doxxed an animal abuser that was throwing cats in waters to drown them, and donating money to support charities to support rape victims, and many other deeds under the guise of anonymity. There are indeed assholes and sociopaths that have used anonymity as a form of protection from retribution and deaths have been caused because of cyber bullying, but there are also many people who have not used it's moniker who have abused and attacked people for their beliefs or whom they are.

Generally, I view this problem as simply if the person is an asshole, he's going to use the looser moral and lesser fear of reprisal of his actions on the internet regardless if he uses anonymity or not. The internet has afforded people the courage to be able to express their beliefs, rational and radical, because of it.

Not everyone views that bad pun as him supporting DD's and DD's isn't even in this comic issue. But, I do worry of what else he's going to spout off of his views in his upcoming work as the issue was clearly him trying to state of how anonymity can breed assholes and of how bad cyber bullying is, which is hilarious considering how he pretty much supports cyber bullying against bronies so long as it's done in 'jest'. Using the comics to spout of his beliefs blatantly and frequently is exactly what I had feared he would be doing when the problem became known.

So it can be both good and bad. I find it weird though that someone would view this as some sort of attack from him. (Or at least one they should be upset about.) Being anonymous is just a state where you don't identify yourself, it's not really a group that can be insulted. Though I wouldn't discount the possibility that 4channers can and will get butthurt over believing he is going after their loose affiliation of random people on the internet. Random people on 4chan get butthurt about a lot of stupid things.

The point in the comic was that the person who was posting these things was unknown. So by definition they were in fact "anonymous".

Yeah but the belief he is spouting here is that anonymous people on the internet can be dicks. Is that really some super controversial stance?

It's more of that they do not like the possibility of him using the MLP comics as a soapbox for his beliefs, which this and the other infamous issue seem to support this concern, not to mention not everyone has a thick skin to withstand actual or perceived insults, even those who like to dish out insults in turn.

It's not the jab at anonymity that is bad but rather that as I mentioned of him using the comics to spout of his beliefs and of how the Cyber Bully is saying Cyber Bullying is bad that has irked many readers. Even if it weren't those issues, the EQG winter comic is still a weak comic with many other issues that would irate any other reader not concerned with Ted's beliefs.

But it's not like he is espousing some really radical stance here. (Or at least it shouldn't be a radical stance.) Is there a pro-cyber-bullying side of the issue?

I just find it really dumb that that particular thing is even a concern here.

No, but it's simply the idea that a noted cyber bully who promotes bullying bronies is the one spouting how cyber bullying is bad that has a lot of people annoyed.

Actually, another issue with it is of how he resolved the cyber bullying issue with the comic by having Sunset Shimmer forgive the CMC's instantly despite literally ruining her reputation and making her miserable throughout Canterlot High for it because they apologized to her in person and felt bad for it. Essentially the comic's saying if a person says he's sorry, forgive that person regardless of how much irreparable and malicious damage that person may have caused to your reputation or other facets of your character. Forgiveness should be not given, it should be earned in my opinion and what the CMC's did to Sunset Shimmer in the comics doesn't deserve her sincerity.

I don't think he's defending Cyber-Bullying, he's talking about the hypocrisy of somebody that supports a blogger that's known to bully people and support other bullies writing an anti-bullying comic.

Now that's interesting:

The animator who added secretly slenderman/mane was fired.

Just shows of how fortunate Ted was working with such a permissive environment as IDW.
