Oldest living relative(s)- and how they're doing

My oldest still-living relative is my grandfather. (12-12-2014)

He just turned 89 last month. To me it's just so weird that he's actually that old.

He still drives well, including on the expressway (aka. Interstate or Dual Carriageway.)

He uses a computer pretty good. He uses Facebook and email. He also does photo editing and knows how to work with folders and burn discs. He goes to the store with his discs and prints the pictures on one of those kiosk things. That's more than my mom can do at just over half his age- LOL

He also still plans out and builds small to medium wood projects (workbenches, shelving, dollhouses, birdhouses, etc.) He also does crosswords and Sudoku type puzzles EVERY day.

Up until last year we would have to race over to his house when it snowed before he would try and do it himself.

Yeah he probably could have done it physically (he has a snow-blower) , but if he slips and busts his ass- It would most likely be game over for him.

Last year right before thanksgiving we had quite a scare though. He suddenly couldn't walk and luckily was near a chair. My grandma wasn't home and luckily my uncle stops over there almost every day after work. My grandpa was stranded in his basement for like an hour. We all thought he was having a stroke. The fire department (ambulance in their area) had to take him to the hospital. Luckily it was just an issue with leg circulation. He can walk OK now but probably won't ever be 100% like he was before the incident.

*Edit* Unfortunately he just  passed on 12-12-2014 -_-

So how old are your relatives and how/what are they doing?

My oldest living relative is my great-aunt (my grandfather's sister) who is 92 and still going strong. She still lives in her house, although she doesn't get out much, since she gave up driving last year. She has a computer and does email, but usually needs help with it; she's pretty good at crossword puzzles though.

I think my grandpa has an aunt that's in her 90s who I met a few ears back , but I'm not so sure. The oldest relative I was aware of was my grandma, who passed away at 77 the other day :1. RIP.

I didn't think she was 77 though  (I thought she was 70ish).

Sorry to hear about your grandma :(

Come to think of it I haven't really lost anyone close since my Grandpa (Mom's Dad)  back in 1999 when I was 11. Unfortunately he was pretty much sick since I was born and could barely talk, so I never really "knew" him.

He was doing fine about a year ago, till he fell and broke his leg, now he's in and out of insanity.

Um...

I don't know half my family...the oldest I know of is my grandma who's in her late 50's.

Though I strongly dislike most of my dad's side of the family cause they're all pretty much selfish asshats who only like to stir up drama. On my mom's side I like most of my family, but I don't talk to them. I've never been close to any of my family aside from the ones I live with. So yeah, I'm gonna say my grandma on my dad's side. Though I could have older relatives considering my mom's adopted.

Believe it or not, the oldest family member in my family is my Dad who is 73. He's sick with a cold at the moment but he'll get better. The oldest family member who I've met was my Grandfather (my mom's side) who died Thanksgiving 2004 at age 81.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well I have a sad update to this thread. My grandpa passed yesterday at 89 (12-12-2014). He wasn't feeling well and it seemed to be related to his leg issues last year. It didn't seem like anything too serious and he seemed much better on his second day at the hospital. He was almost going to go back home but his white blood cell count was still too low, which concerned the doctors. They had a scan done and discovered that he had a leaking aorta (main blood vessel going away from the heart). He passed a few hours after that.

The thing I'm most concerned about at this point is my grandmother. I'm not quite sure yet how she's going to cope. Before last year's incident with his leg circulation, my grandpa used to do pretty much everything still. He could still drive fine, but we didn't want him even attempting to do yard-work anymore.

The good of it is that he was mobile, in good spirits, and was still all there upstairs to the end. It wasn't a slow- drawn out decline.

It just really sucks that it is so close to Christmas. -_-  Just over a week ago, I was over their house and he mentioned that his Christmas shopping was all done.

For a while that was my grandmother on my Dad's side who was well into her 90's before she passed away a few years back. The oldest I can think of off the top of my head is my uncle who is a hair dresser in San Pedro (near Los Angelas) who is in his mid to late 70's though since my family is fairly large there is probably a few people who are much older who I am either not thinking of right now or haven't met. My uncle is in very good shape for a man his age.

My aunt Vivian is 95, I believe, and my grandmother is 83. Vivian is as frail and hard of hearing as they come, but her mind is as sharp as it ever was.

Grandma is the opposite. For somebody her age, she can maneuver surprisingly well, although her mind is almost entirely gone, to the point that she can't even speak anymore and it's doubtful she can understand much of what's said to her. She at least seem aware of this fact, oddly enough, as indicated by her sometimes pointing at her head and having an exasperated look on her face. It's kind of sad, really, and she doesn't know who any of us are anymore.

Well the oldest relative living on my mums side is my grandfather at 72.

The oldest relative I met was around 109 and that was my great great grandfather who passed away in 1999. When I was 1.

The oldest on my dads side is his oldest sister at 66.

My uncle Luis is 75 and he's still going on strong with a custodian job at the mall. His health is as good as ever and I really hope it stays that way. He's a pretty strong man \o/

My grandmother on my mother's side is 80+, and she's still an enormous pain in the butt. xD  She's the foreman of the family; shouting orders over the phone or from her bed.  Sadly, my grandfather passed away this year, but at least he might finally get some peace and quiet.

My oldest is my grandma who is about 80 years old. She has a couple issues that, coupled with her age, means she needs to be taken care of daily. Overall, she's not doing great, but she's alive.

My oldest living relative is my grandmother, from my mother's branch of the family. She is 88 and, to be perfectly honest so-so when it comes to health. She barely walks, suffers from recurring pains in her joints and her hearing and vision have obviously degraded.

That being said, she still finds the energy and time to comment on everything, and try to intrude on her grandchildren's lives as much as possible. So in that department, i would say she's fine :)

My grandma just turned 80 today! She's all the way in Ouagadougou and we can't miss school to go celebrate, but I did get to talk to her today. Apparently they've been having a huge party and around 150-200 people have already arrived, and more are to come. She says it's like her wedding all over again, with people congratulating her, giving her too many presents, etc. She sounded really happy! :derp:

My oldest living relative is my mom's Great Aunt in her 80s. Spry as hell, although how she hasn't gotten skin cancer with all of the sun bathing she does, I'm not sure.

Hmm.. I don't know if she really counts, but my step-dad's grandmother is like eighty and still going strong.

That's the only one I can think of, as I don't know much of my family.

My oldest living relative is a 92 year old aunt.  She has always looked and acted younger than she is.  Now she's finally slowing down a bit physically but her overall health and attitude is amazing.  :)

Oldest living relative: My paternal grandfather, at the age of 77, is in perfect health. However, my grandmother, age 75, just suffered a stroke.
