While today is April Fools Day, today is also the release day for the first issue of the five issue "FIENDship is Magic series" that will be detailing the major villains of Equestria. The first issue details my favorite MLP villain: King Sombra.

So, what did I think? I shall leave that in the spoiler below...

I absolutely LOVED this comic!

I was afraid they would ruin my image of Sombra, though I was okay with my head canon getting axed. Anywho...

1. The idea of a race of Shadow Ponies is something I find intriguing. Would love to see more on them.

2. The reasons behind the slavery have solid backing now! They were digging to free the Shadow Ponies!

3. The comic was fairly dark; probably amongst the darkest in the series yet. What happened with Princess Amore... :wau:

4. Radiant Hope...I really felt for her...

5. I also felt for Sombra, and I'm also glad they didn't turn him into a boisterous villain like I was fearing.

So yeah, this comic had a great mix of tragedy, surprise, and it was just...SO good.

Eagrerly awaiting the Tirek issue! :D

Guess we learned who/what Sombra's "Morgoth" was.

Yep; that pretty much nixes my Grogar head canon, but it's for the best. I actually liked this better. :)

I'm not usually a huge fan of the comics, they're kinda hit and miss for me, but... That. Was. Awesome! AND it had a pair of Crystal Unicorns in it! Which seem to be every bit as rare as I'd always headcanoned.

I'm still on the fence about whether I consider stories as presented in the comics canon or not, but I'll happily gobble up bits of world building like that.

Really liked it, gave Sombra the characterization he so desperately needed, I don't know where the comics stand in continuity, but nonetheless, I like Sombra a heck of a lot more then I did beforehand. :)

A little darker then the usual story, but seeing as how we're dealing with the villains here I think that's to be expected. Besides, I like a bit of tension in my stories from time to time.

But yeah, in the 5 minutes I read that comic I was 100% more engaged in the plot & characters then a 50 minute 2 part special (sorry Crystal Empire...) They did a good job here!

This was a fantastic story. Idw did something that I didn't even think Sombra started off as a pony... The art is also fantastic. Great job! I'm definitely am buying the upcoming issues when they release.

That was a cool Disney thing at the end.

Man, I've been thinking of an OC named Golden Hope that gets killed by Sombra way before this came out. It feels like my ideas are being used before I can accomplish them.

I read it and it was amazing. Spoilers:

I feel so sorry for Sombra. He is kinda like Arthas Menethil (the fate is a little bit similar).

Let me start by saying I was at a nearby comic store today and I was reading this for like 30 minutes and I didn't bring any money with me so I just decided to read the entire comic but the guy kicked me out because I was "window shopping" which apparently is "uncool" Which sucks because I was about to finish it.

Anyway it was an interesting read. Sombra's backstory makes more sense after reading this. And from what I understand the Crystal Heart reflects emotions from ponies hearts which helps keep away evil forces for some time. And I'm thinking Radiant Hope is Amore's daughter since Cadance is like a distant relative to Amore. And Radiant Hope ran away to stay with Celestia or just wandered or something like that. And Sombra put a curse on her which removed a lot of crystal traits but could still radiate love with her horn. It reminds me of that one scene from the Lion King.

By the way is this coming out later along with the other Fiendship issues as a bundle because I prefer those over the single issues.

I couldn't wait for the whole Fiendship is Magic bundle, and I was intrigued with this issue, so, I took the liberty to read it now bedore I spoil it beforehand (I'm still willing to buy the bundle though  :smug: ). I wasn't expecting that much, but Fiendship is Magic started really well with this, it provided a well needed and well done backstory for Sombra, and I really liked the OC Radiant Hope, and the fact that Princess Amore was there is a big plus, as they evidently took an obscure source of FiM canon (Journal of the Two Sisters)  :proud:

I was pretty hyped for the Fiendship series when I heard about it, and this issue got it off to a great start. Sombra needed fleshing out more than any of the other villains, and this comic actually made him an interesting character. I thought I'd never want to see anymore of Sombra after the Reflections arc ended up being so disappointing, but I'm good with pretending that garbage doesn't exist and getting more of this Sombra in the future.

This is definitely one of the strongest issues from the comics in recent memory. A definite good start for the Fiendship is Magic series (and more proof the writers do better doing one shot stories). Also, they successfully fleshed out Sombra's character in a good manner where it showed him as a tragic figure, but not really a sympathetic one considering what he does in vengeance and the comic shows that point well. I wouldn't mind more stories being done on him if the comic's version of him is used.

Also for those wondering about Amore's fate, well that was actually Hasbro editing getting involved if what the writer Whitley says was true as he originally intended to kill her off, but Hasbro said no, so he gave her far worse fate for it.

Yeah, I got a couple of reasons that might have been edited:

1- They intend to use her in the future (Princess Amore belongs to the official canon, as seen in the Journal of the Two Sisters)

2- Actually killing her was too strong for a pony comic, besides, being blown to pieces, while it's usually fatal, it's no stranger of being kept alive, but not fully revived unless each piece is reunited (But that's usually reserved for bad guys  :P )

Regardless, I think getting rid of Amore makes sense, otherwise how they're gonna explain her absence in the official canon?

And some Bronies have speculated that Hope later snapped and willingly let some Changelings drain all her love so she couldn't feel the pain of loss anymore, but they ended up turning her into a certain Queen...
