Do bronies need to take the show more or less seriously?

I feel that the fandom should stop taking the show as seriously as some people are.

Yeah, we shouldn't all treat it like a casual cartoon, because MLP is anything but that. But I feel that some people take the show waaaay too seriously.

This is a WIP.

Why are you still looking at this?

Seriously. You should have looked away by now.

Congratulations. You have read the 4th line.

I can't believe you are still here. *sighs and walks away*

In my opinion, we should not take this show lightly because it's a good kids show with character development, good moral and high entertainment value. However, bronies should not take it to the extreme. Over-analyzing is the first word comes to my head when I hear about FIM analysis community, then the second word come to my mind "nitpicking" and finally we hear the "rant". Mlp is not GoT, it is a kids cartoon, can we just relax and watch?

Less seriously. It's just a cartoon intended for children. I like it. I think it's great. But if someone thinks it sucks, it might. I don't know or really care.

As for fans who take it too seriously and over analyze it, that's fine too, but whenever I see two people arguing, then I'm kinda like "it's just a cartoon".

It's rare for me to see people argue and the most I ever see is discussions with opposing views debating thier thoughts and opinions. That's fine. Talk about it all you want. So I'm not referring to those discussions.

Overall, I feel that taking a cartoon even slightly seriously is already too much.

Like the whole Alicorn Twilight or Equestria Girls. When people started complaining, I feel like they were taking the show too seriously.

You can voice your opinion and say "this got dumb". But some of these people would go on and on about how it's over and gave this cartoon more importance than it deserved. Cuz at the end of the day, that's all it is. A cartoon. It isn't your bills, your political leaders, your job, or anything that will actually affect you.

It's a nice distraction and can be a sort of hobby (sparking discussions, motivating collecting, etc), but nothing I feel is worth taking seriously.

I think some people take the show a little too seriously for what it is. REMEMBER- IT'S A SHOW ABOUT RAINBOW COLORED MAGICAL TALKING LITTLE HORSES!!! :muffins:

oh- and dragons. :mustache::squee:

People also seem to sometimes forget that this show is made by people AT WORK and it's ultimately HASBRO'S not "theirs". I think the writers and animators are doing a pretty good job even after 5 seasons. If they could spend the amount of time they WANTED in order to get it exactly to their liking- we may only be on season 3 now. With the time crunches, things aren't going to be exactly smooth as glass.

In terms of my seriousness taken towards the show, I'm somewhere in the middle. I don't take the show too seriously, but am more than just a casual watcher. My main interest is what goes into making the show happen. I actually am very interested the amount of care that goes into making the show. I've worked with Adobe Flash and was seriously thinking of going into digital animation or something like that a few years back. I also like seeing what the voice actors and writers have to say online. Altogether I think it must be a great show to work on.

As for the show itself- I don't over-analyze it.

There are really only a few things I've thought about more than I think are necessary...

The mane 6's human equivalent ages.

Applejack's vaporized (and never mentioned) parents.

Rainbow Dash's...

  • backstory and why she even lives in Ponyville (maybe it's easier to feel cooler than the mostly non-flying population?)
  • her issues with herself (scared in Rainboom episode, No longer "coolest" and doesn't like being alone in Mare-do Well, and sad that Tank is gone in Tanks/Memories ep.- back to living alone for a while?) - hence why she always puts forth a tough/cool personality.

Rainbow Rocks... at least how it could've looked... in a stranger, more interesting dimension

I started a thread, some lets see, yesterday was thursday, and that was week from... a long time ago is when I made it. In that topic I asked my fellow community members (hey, thats you) if they liked to analyze the show, or if they treated it as a sunday morning cartoon. More or less how seriously they took Friendship is Magic.

I was surprised at the amount of contention between the two sides, and even more staggered by the amount of people who felt they werent extreme enough either way.So here I am, here you are. Do you think people, mainly bronies, need to start taking the show a little more seriously, or do you think that people take it too seriously already and need to tone it down?

Unlike my last thread, where I was generally apathetic towards choosing a side, here I have some things to say. I think bronies need to take it more seriously. Now I am NOT saying we need to catch every plot hole (hehe) or treat it like Game of Thrones (or A Song of Ice and Fire if you prefer), but I do think people are too quick to dismiss it as more than a simple cartoon.

Because (yes because can be used to start a sentence) it is obviously more than just a cartoon. Gumball, Teen Titans GO, and Spongebob are cartoons. They are shows we watch if we turn on the TV and its there. Bronies actively tune in each and every Saturday morning to watch it, the same way people tune in to watch The Walking Dead, CSI, or the aforementioned Game of Thrones.

If we are so quick to throw it to the wind, then who are we to say that people outside the fandom cant? Why are Anti-bronies wrong when they do it, but we are justified because "we watch the show." I dont know about you, but MLP is one of the best shows I have seen in my life. It has such good writing, excellent characters, complex world, interesting lore, genuinely funny comedy, and has created a fandom to rival Star Wars, Star Trek, D&D, and Sonic. Does that not deserve a grain of respect?

But enough of my babbling, this is a thread after all. What do YOU think? Is the show taken way to seriously by some bronies, or vice versa?

Your question is very contextual, it depends on what aspect of the show you think should be taken more or less seriously. I've noticed that out of the people who do episode reviews and analysis, the ones that take the show less seriously (They're not completely obsessed, and have the ability to laugh at themselves are the ones who tend to have points that I find to be more insightful and interesting.

Analysis in itself is also very contextual, as is any form of "art", and I could really care less about how seriously you take the fandom or the show, and am more interested in the substance of your content. I find most of the community doesn't actually do analysis videos, but more commentary and opinion pieces. I find those to be extremely boring. I myself do actual analysis on the fandom and the show, which can be found on the channel in my signature if you care.

As for wether or not I think people need to take this show more seriously or not, regardless of what they're making or not making, I think it's healthy to not take the show and fandom too seriously, but obviously to participate in a possitive way, you must at least care a little bit. It's more about a balancing act, have the ability to laugh at the fact that we all love a show about colorful talking horses, that it's a little kids show, but also take pride in what you like about the show and fandom, and don't be afriad to wear that on your sleeve.

The show was blown out of proportion like a super meme, it got a LOT of attention. People said it was an amazing show, and it was held up to a higher standard. It's not really surprising to see this amount of criticism. Honestly, MLP isn't that amazing of a show, but at least it's watchable unlike the previous generations where the characters were all more or less the same.

A lot of bronies seem to forget the fact that MLP:FiM is just a compilation of drawings and audio clips produced in a studio. The characters don't have complex thought processes, they aren't living their lives when they're not on screen, and the world doesn't actually exist what the show staff have created. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having headcanons, but there's a place for them. A headcanon doesn't change the show or how it will be perceived by the general public, so serious discussions are not the place.

I think that bronies & pegasisters should try to emulate the virtues portrayed in the show by treating people kindly. In that regard, I think they should take the show more seriously.

I've run into plenty of fans on Twitter who are... not very pleasant.

I think it should be taken as seriously as other fandoms. But the problem is, whenever little reference of MLP:FiM is shown, either anti-bronies spam it up, or bronies are like, "Hey, it's Pinkie Pie!"

I think the overobsessive (if that's even a word) bronies and anti-bronies should try at least resisting the urge for that.

Definitely need to take it less seriously.

I watched this video from Animated James earlier today, and what it made me realize is that this fandom has a tendency at times to treat MLP like holy scripture. Some people almost seem to have founded their entire ideologies on the mantra of "love and tolerate" and the elements of harmony. Which, quite frankly, is sheer nonsense. It's not a far cry from saying that Laurent Faust was a prophet and FIM was her divine message to the world.

Is FIM an entertaining show? Absolutely! Is it a sensible basis for a worldview or ideology? Not. Even. Close. Ultimately, at the end of the day, it's just a show. A show that's brought people together, sure—arguably even a show that has made a significant impact on a great many people—but still just a show. It has no inherent, long-term significance. It won't be around forever, and neither will the brony fandom. If humanity still survives ten thousand years from now, it's more than likely no one will even remember that such a show ever existed.

I'm not trying to devalue it as a show. For what it is, it's pretty good. But I'd say at best it's downright silly to overvalue it, to regard it as more than what it is, and what it is, is entertainment.

Bronies, like anyone else, should take MLP:FiM as seriously as they choose to. We're all independent individuals entitled to our own opinions and tastes. Who am I, or anyone else, to tell you how you should enjoy a show?

I like to take the show seriously and analyze it. Of course I also highly enjoy it, but I focus more on the former. There's room for both approaches, but ultimately the viewer should decide how they watch and enjoy this show, just like any other.

  • 3 weeks later...

Troubled people is more likely to put excessive attention and importance into such subjects, mlp being one. Sometimes even developing fanatic behaviours.

This often demonstrates dependency upon something they can't obtain from their personal life. Either it be friendship, love or any other kind of "unobtainable" situation or/and relationship.
