Is being a Brony/Pegasister really that bad of a thing?

The reason I don't tell my parents is because it would confuse the heck out of them- they've never heard the term "fandom" and don't have internet aside from slow, use-only-when-necessary dial up. So yeah, I'm not afraid they'd say anything to me, it'd be more about the whole "I don't know what any of this is about" thing.

But why is liking super hero's or anything else different or "okay" in the eyes of society?

Why is it okay for people to like violent video games and that is the norm, but liking ponies that help with every day issues of friendship and acceptance is a bad thing?

Again I don't think it's because of the fact they like it. Anyone who knows anything about geek culture knows about bronies and likely (at the very least) puts up with it. The fanbase has a very negative reputation partially because various...strange people are involved in it.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

I don't think it is that big of a deal honestly, but when people have an issue with wanting to by merch but they "can't" because they are afraid of what their parents might think if they do... is just hard for me to understand.

Like you said, it is not like they are coming out of the closet, it is just a television show. It is just like telling someone you like Star Trek and you want to get some Trek merch.

I just don't know why it is such a big deal for some people to enjoy what they like, and have the freedom to express themselves.

Boy, girl, man, woman, it should not "define" you as a person, and it's not like you are going out of your way to be overly obsessed and go out dressed as a pony every day.

The fact that we have a 'guideline' for people how to tell others they are a brony tells me otherwise. In other forums its usually about how to tell people you are gay...

Is being a Brony that bad of a thing?  Not really...your just watching a Cartoon...i dont see anything bad about it.

Does that stop anyone from bullying you ?  Of course not.

My experience is, that if your already an unpopular kid or not that strong enough to defend yourself from anybody, that their just bully you for everything.

I got bullied watching cartoons ( any cartoons ) for being only for little babys, even if the bullys at that time were also kids. ( logic Zero since cartoons are supposed to be for kids )

And even after i watched some horror movies as a kid, they still said to me that the movies i watched were just a piece of crap and that the stuff they watch is much better and more for mans and crap like that.

Some people just bully you. Doesnt madder what youre interested in. By me it was the case that, whatever i was interested in, i got bullied.

Bullys are just douches. Im pretty sure that many bullys who insults others for liking certain thing, also sometimes liking those things by them selves, but still annoy you, just because they like to annoy others or they just dont like you.

As for the being afraid part of telling your parents...

Okay, first off i dont even understand why its necessary for some bronies to come out.

I mean, its just a show. Or do you tell your parents about everything your interested in? Yeah, i have now an interest in action movies, now in horror movies, now im watching disaster movies parents, now im playing crash bandicoot, hey i just started watching Family Guy.

I never really told my parents about something i watched, because why?

Sometimes i tell them, if i really have something really exciting to say about, if i would find a movie that everyone would like to watch or something.

But i wouldnt tell them anything. If im in a new fandom, than great!

Do i have to tell my parents or family about something that they might could find strange or i just feel uncomfortable telling them?

No,not really...i dont have too. Why? Im just watching something..its not a big secret or anything that im hiding and have to tell and they might forget it anyway at some point. Or maybe im losing interest anyway at some point.

I told them..they both forgot about it..i kind off lost interest anyway = POINTLESS.

Second , if you even feel uncomfortable with telling your parents..than why do?

But to answer your question, of course it can be strange to someone if you tell them you watch a kids show as an adult.

Because, lets face it...it is kinds strange. The show is more targeted to girls and from a company that sells toys for little kids.

So, of course someone would find it strange or wouldnt understand it in the first place.

Being a Brony isnt bad, but you should expect that some people might find it strange, since we could watch other stuff with a similar meaning that is more adult themed...like others do.The ones that find you strange might do it.

And some people that judge you for it are just douches.

Just tell your parents if you want to...you dont have too...i mean, i see no reason why you have too  :ooh:

( Im not even sure anymore if the main theme of this topic was, that you are afraid of telling someone since i posted so much...but..well....)

Kinda ironic how many bronies deny not being gay for liking MLP but yet behave as liking MLP is indeed being gay.

"Should i tell my parents that i am a brony?", "Is being a brony really that bad?" "How can i tell my parents/family that i'm a brony?".

Now replace brony with gay. See what i mean?

Now for OP's question....ask yourself, do your parents really need to know? I mean is it really that important that they know you like a cartoon show about ponies?

I remember another user saying how he mentioned it to his... aunt I think? From reading user's post, it was as if aunt was expecting him to admit being gay but instead was anticlimactically told about his fondness for cartoon show and the conversation seem to have become awkward. People congratulated said user but I'm unsure if that's something really worth praising.

I'm public about my fondness for the show (not forcing it onto people but more accurately not hiding it) because, honestly, who actually cares? I'd like to think that typical reasonable person at worst would think "odd, that person is fond of a show I see to normally target young children." but then would quickly forget about it or cease to care about it because those people have their own life to worry about to bother about you.

My parents are aware that I like MLP:FIM and that I have merchandise for it, however I never felt the need to "come out of the closet" so to say because it's really not anything noteworthy. Actually it may be more accurate to say that they're aware that I'm fond of something ponies but they don't really know what MLP:FIM is (they may not even know title of show) nor concept of Bronydom. So in general, they don't really care. I'm willing to explain my interest if they asked, however they never did so I don't feel the need to explain.

Most people don't care if you are into MLP neither do they really want to know, or do you want to know to what kind of stuff your father has fapped to?

That's the point I was making.

Most people in general find it odd that a older person (male or female but usually male is criticized more) to like a little kid's show. My parents found it odd that my boyfriend and I both liked it at first. It did not make much sense to them, since we are not the target audience of this show. That was my case, but now they are more accepting. No one was worried about our sexuality, but we were also grown adults dating. For teens or pre-teens, that is most likely the worry from parents. As for children whom make fun of others who watch it, they just feel the need to. They see it is "meant for girls." I was made fun of for liking boys' toys and shows by boys and girls alike.

Sheesh, this is like the 200th thread on this subject... We get so many of these that I am amazed that this is still a shock to some people.

I'm not a brony myself, but if you are and you are showing your love for the show in a healthy way, then there is no problem. People will judge, and the best solution is to let it go and don't bother with them. The more you give them attention the more you give validity to their gender role issue.

Well said.

Everything is very insightful, I just wish that with today's society and how everyone wants equality and the right to do whatever, that people shouldn't be ridiculed for liking a "little girls show".

If this was a show that cast live people in a more storybook type of way then there would be a larger fandom than there already is.

People are just so worried about every little thing that they don't look at the big picture.

Well, it's actually the world system talking. The more I study global capitalism and neoliberalism, the creepier and more invasive it seems, yet most people take it for granted. Not only are we slaves to the system which mandates we all pick our shackles by tying ourselves down to a 9-5 job and alienate ourselves from our true nature as according to Marx's principles, but even outside of work culture Western society and its institutions seeks to homogenize the population as much as possible.

The end goal is of course to practically manufacture a similar line of potential workers for any given position, but society even tries to control what we do and do not enjoy, likely as a means to reduce unpredictability in new employees. It also installs values in us, and if you've ever seen the movie Inception, it works in a similar way because we're raised with certain ideas and values that we just take for granted and which become indistinguishable from ideas we come up with on our own. The Western world is kind of like a living organism that has measures in place to try to maintain some form of homeostasis.

Anyways, back to hobbies, there are certain things that people are expected to enjoy, and others that are specific to one's age and gender. Individuality may be pushed in theory to try to get people to occupy certain jobs, but individuality is not actually valued beyond that because it is a threat to the homeostasis the world system tries to maintain. The world system wants us to be like the guy in the Lego Movie. People label that as being normal and that's what a lot of people, especially teenagers, strive for. In reality though being different makes someone interesting, but we can't have that.

Hobbies? Unless it's watching Hockey or Football and drinking several gallons of beer while fantasizing about some woman or casually enjoying the latest cinematic blockbuster or AAA FPS, it's probably "weird" for an adult male to get into it, effectively ensuring that male workers only take time off for the Stanley Cup or Super Bowl, with one or two annual holidays with one's nuclear family staggered with those of other workers. Likewise there are stereotypes for women. So yeah, Bronies are weird, but we also avoid falling into the trap of being a homogenized individual manufactured by our society, to some extent.

I'm not sure. I think making live action would place limitations. It would have less judgement, but it wouldn't be the same thing.

I am pretty open about being a Brony. I dont mind telling people, all my friends know and i even introduced me GF to MLPFiM now were are both hooked on the show. My friends are nerds like me and collect and sell toys so its pretty cool that they always keep an eye out for any good MLP finds. I work in education with Elementary School kids and High School. Its fun because i told a group of my 3rd graders that i liked MLP and the Girls thought it was cool, they ask about my collection and think it is fun that an adult likes the show. One little boy tried to tease me for liking a "girl show" almost immediately  one of the girls said "There no such thing as a boys or girl show, I like the color black and Darth Vader and I'm a girl!" After class another boy came up to me and said that he watches the show online because he doesn't want his older brothers to see it on the Netflix history. I am Brony and Proud, Our collection at home is growing and i couldnt be any happier... well It would make me a little happier if there was more Luna Merchandise available.

Haters gonna hate. B)  Real friends will stay by your side and support you no matter what you like! That's how I see it. I mean I've got friends who don't even watch the show or know anything about it sending pics of merch to me and listening to me go on and on about my new MLP toy finds. That's what's great about the show too, it shows that friends can have different interests and still be respectful to each other. Like when Rainbow Dash thought Twilight was silly for liking to read so much and then got hooked on Daring Do! Our friends may just end up liking MLP too if they gave it a chance!  ;)

in my observations the more times you use the word "brony" to describe oneself, the less chance it is for you to get laid. it's science~~~~~!

SCIIIIIIIENCE! I think "brony" got associated with very negative connotations, as there are some bad seeds in the fandom  :o
