Anyone else really dislike the "Bonra" push?

I'll cut to the chase. I never was a fan of Lyra or Bon Bon. Their fan made personalities never interested me, nor do their official personalities. But I'm still more than a little bothered with them being so up front and center, with their touchy feelies in the viewers' face. In Rainbow Rocks, in the 100th episode, and now in their own chapter book.

I dislike what the shippers made these two out to be, for no other reason than they stood together that one time, and it became a thing. And I guess because the shippers gave these two their personalities which DHX took inspiration from, and it just about borders on lesbian lover territory, with the longing gazes and touchy feels, just starts raising red flags, when those two are made to be mre in the foreground.

I don't want to jmp to conclusions as of yet, since I still want to have faith in the show marketing friendship, and I know that some friends are more touchy than others (case in point, DT and SS' s rump bump)...it's just something on these two that I can't get behind, whether it's their personalities, designs, or being more than background pones....I just can't put my finger on it.

But what do you guys feel about BonRa? (Or LyBon)

Eh, I don't really mind it. It adds a touch of humor to the show, but it gets old REALLY quickly.

BTW, when did they first stand together?

Might be me but I see far so much bronies ship mares to mares with everything. It might seems like it with Lyra and Bonbon but that's the first it seems like it on MLP side. On the fandom side, it just mare shippings with mares all the time and I cringe hard if I see it often (or browse through arts, say like I'm just searching art all about Pinkie Pie)

I guess my feelings hasn't change about it but I don't mind if Hasbro is taking that route. I let Lyra and Bonbon be as I'll move along.

I don't get how the two being so close threatens the friendship message. Even if they 'were' lesbian lovers (never confirmed to my knowledge), I think it'd still be true.  :)

There've been other couples on the show, some with varied levels of affection shown; regardless, nuzzling and hugging and all that seem pretty common place in the show.

Either way, they don't strike me as particularly interesting or relatable, and they smack pretty hard of 'common' ponies to me in a number of ways. But if a world wants to be believable, some unremarkable or common-feeling individuals is pretty much a necessity, so long as they don't drift into being completely so. Personally I really like them as they are.  They add a touch of life  and diversity to the world in my mind.

Well, for all the users that don't know (all 2 of you) I consider LyraBon my main OTP for several reasons, including design and personality of the 2. There was also a bit more evidence for it than just 'standing together that one time.' But your opinion is your own, and i respect that. However, I see them being brought to the front as a beneficial thing. It is just another way of Hasbro and DHX acknowledging the fans and what they would like to see. No one complained when they did it with Derpy, so i don't see any reason to complain now. And just because they are all touchy feely towards one another doesn't mean that they are a romantic couple. In my school i've seen girls hug their friends every time they see/leave each other, even if it's just to go to the toilet. It's gotten to the point sometimes where people have asked if they are in a romantic relationship, but they reply no and that they are "extremely close friends" and i think that is what they are trying to make Lyra and Bon Bon in MLP and EG. But, you never know. With same-sex marriage legal in all states they may add a same-sex couple to the cast (highly unlikely but not impossible). Only time will tell.

Harbor patrol, we have a big ship in the way...

Yes sir, it's official, though the owners won't admit it...still kind annoying though.

I find it odd that with your stand against possible lesbian red flags, that you use a very shiptastic avatar picture.

being the artist of the pic, I don’t see anything wrong with it at all. It's a kiss on the eye as Sunset Shimmer cries- as chaste as a kiss on the cheek or forehead. Parents or relatives kiss tears away off a crying child under their care, don't they? Does an onlooker ship that, when they see it happen?

Looking at the full size image, don't see how one could interpret it as ship fuel.

Oh, it's totally ship fuel, hun.

Believe me, I'm with you when sticking with the het ships, but that's totally a picture that could be taken in the yuri shipping way.

The fact that the artist drew it as friendshipping means they get the final say. But most people don't know that context when they see your avatar.

Anyway, more on point, I'm not part of the whole LyraBon thing.

I get nods to the fandom, but they're popping up a bit too much. It's like if Derpy popped up and said muffins in multiple episodes.

It would start to get dull.

I don't really care about it. I mean, I like the idea that Hasbro might be attempting to encourage same-sex couples(?), but I'm just not a big fan of Lyra and Bon Bon/Sweetie Drops. I don't mind most of the headcannons that have gained popularity in the fandom, and actually like a few. Lyra and Bon Bon just don't interest me.

I think it was in Boast Busters  , at least that's the oldest chapter I've seen them together  .

I've never been too fond of the headcanon about them, and being so overused I grew even sick of it  >_> . I wasn't too thrilled when they showed that image of them with suggestive bedroom eyes they gave each other promoting Slice of Life, but when I saw the result, with Bon Bon's real name being Sweetie Drops (which's actually her official name in the merchandise), and being a secret agent who took out the bug bear  :sunbutt: . And they played they... suggestily, close friendship in a Friendship Games short, but they showed their crazy competition which escalated ridiculously. Which made me like their canon selves more than the fandom's  :P

THANK YOU!...

I cannot STAND it personally.

I may get a ton of hate for this...but legit. It bugs the heck outta me!

Personally, they're friends...not "frieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeendzzzzz!!!1111" like some people imply...

Just...Friends...unless the story officially says otherwise, you take it literally, or not at all...

there's SO MANY PEOPLE using it to propogate their belief system, and "push things" on others

using the pair...I mean like...I don't care if you're gay or not. I treat everypony equally...but at the same time

the propaganda side of it and reactions seem sooooooo insanely forced, which gets annoying.

And on the topic of shipping...I'll just post what I've always posted.

You ask around 90 percent of shippers if they are against arranged marriages? Most of them will strongly say yes.

What is an arranged marriage?...a person who pairs two people together who he/she thinks is compatible

against their wills in order to satisfy his/her beliefs or goals.

What's a shipper?...a person who pairs two characters together who he/she thinks is compatible against

their wills in order to satisfy his/her beliefs (headcanons) or goals.

But then again, that's just my opinion, you are 100% free to disagree...

I'm not a fan of people pushing hetero ships all over the place either like its some how more acceptable then "that other type" of pairing, so I suppose I see where you are coming from.

Lets be real though: Heterosexual couples will ALWAYS, ALWAYS have the majority in everything, because most people are indeed straight. So when one semi canon pairing on a show about pastel colored ponies happens I take what I can get. People talk about "propoganda" and "pushing values on others" but straight people have been doing that to me for decades, and I'm not talking in a "hey I like this pairing" kind of way, I mean in a "I will make you homeless/ make your life hell if you don't have the values I do" kind of way.

So if you aren't interested in a harmless, really minor background element, then just don't pay it any notice, because your value system is always going to be in the majority whether I like it or not.

I'm pretty much neutral on the issue. I couldn't care less if they're a couple or just friends. What I'm annoyed with is DHX having these VEEERY Shiptastic scenes that can easily convince you that they're a couple and then the staff flat out says "No, they're not a couple, and they'll never be a couple. Shipping is a fan thing, we're not interested. They're just best friends and that is ALL they'll ever be, whether you like it or not" whilst continuing to add shiptastic scenes" leading to intense flame wars with one side screaming "Homophobes!" to those who say the ship isn't canon and the other side screaming "No-life basement dwelling shippers!" to those saying the ship is canon. This is effectively making both sides of the debate look like complete idiots.

Seriously DHX, the f**k are you doing?

I hate all shipping.

I like both Lyra and Bon Bon. They have nice designs.

I hate the fandom portrayal of them. They are friends. Literally. Nothing more.

Shippers see what they want to see.

Whoa, really? Aren't you taking it a little bit too seriously? They are FICTIONAL characters after all, you know...

I do think it's kind of a bummer we know so little about them in canon apart from that they're best friends. Like that's their main personality trait. Friendship kinda isn't a personality trait tho.

About how relationshippy they appear:

I know two people in person who have a friendship like theirs and I honestly have to say: If they were in an actual relationship I'd be far less confused and even creeped out at times. (People have asked me multiple times if they're a gay couple.) They have one very intimate friendship and as someone naturally distanced, well... watching them throws me (and others) off.

I've seen this comparison.

Problem with it is that unlike actual human beings, fictional characters have no will to go against.

They don't exist. And while I support respecting character's dignity and personalities, they cannot take offense to literally anything you do to them.

NM ... officially Lyra and Bon Bob are best friends, so don't worry about 'red flags' or whatever that means. Since narrative is a form of art that allows viewer interpretation of the presented material, you will always have those that modify the show beyond its original purpose. Authorial intent is not the only way art should be interpreted, and to believe that misses the entire point of most art.

But I do invite you to elaborate on what you meant by red flags, since the presentation of that particular selection of words is rather ... curious.

I agree with one of the posters above in that the writers need to give them more personality traits than being each other's friend. I mean, the show was the one that started the sitting Lyra and drinking Lyra and creepily smiling Lyra memes, the fandom just pointed them out. That's why I kind of like the new short, because I think the show is finally taking advantage of its chances for spontaneous shenanigans with these two.

As far my stance on LyraxBon Bon is concerned. I am totally neutral on that. Let Shippers ship i always say. They appear 2 seconds on screen, it's not like they totally steal the spotlight.
