S05:E15 - Rarity Investigates

After last weeks lackluster episode, MLP is back with a strong episode! After several episodes exploring the dynamic of AJ and Raritys friendship, we finally get an episode dedicated to Rarity and Dash. We've been given little tidbits here and there of how their friendship works, with Raritys girly girlness and Dash's tomboyishness, I always knew they were better friends than what we have been shown. And now, finally, we have that episode. The are direction was amazing in this episode. It's episodes like this that make me proud to be brony. This is the type of episode you can show to anybody, and say "see, it's a really good show. That's why I watch it!".

That was a truly epic episode. Rarity's inner monologue was great, the noir theme was PERFECT for someone like her, and the animation put this episode right over the top. So many scenes were sold by the little things DHX does to add to an episode, from Rarity booping Dash in the nose with lotion, to all the facial expressions and poses. No question this is a 10/10, and I'm glad it came from the new writing duo. Another perfect showing from best pony.

I now demand a fanfic titled 'The Maltese Gtiffon' staring Shadow Spade.

 

It is interesting that both Rarity and Dash also have literary characters they identify with. I've said this before, but for all the differences, Rarity and Dash actually have some notable similarities. Both are dreamers. Rarity finally realized hers this season... Dash is creeping toward hers.

 

The dynamic between the two was well done, and here is hoping we get one more next season.

 

I admit the Wonderbolts continue to annoy me a little as an organization. I have to wonder if Dash's destiny is to join them as a sort of agent of reform. The lack of loyalty tends to be major issue with the Bolts.

Well, I can say that even though we had to wait almost four full seasons to get another Raridash episode, this one was well worth the wait. The film noir spoof is also kind of fun, and different from what we have seen in the show thus far. The only thing that confuses me is how Wind Rider could be confused for a female pony. Also, Rarity using her fashion sense to pick up on details most ponies would not notice? That reminds me a bit of Legally Blonde, but I guess Rarity is that kind of character.

 

Does anypony else think a Shadow Spade story in a spinoff series would be great? If we get one for a comic annual then we can get it reprinted in a graphic novel with Power Ponies, which is what's actually happening with the EQG comics in due time. Given that mystery stories do lend themselves well to novels, and novels are Rarity's inspiration for her fashion line and subsequent seizing of the opportunity to be a detective, a G.M. Berrow novel of sorts might work too.

* Rarity and Dash episode, nice. We've had very little development episodes focused on these two together.

* Yay, Spitfire again. <3 And she's NOT being pointlessly portrayed as a bitch along with Fleetfoot, this time. Always a good thing. Corey Powell wrote Scootalove: The Episode like a boss, but unfortunately she only further tarnished poor Spitfire's inconsistent depiction record even further. This depiction is far more similar to her original spotlight in Best Night Ever. I like it.

Tabitha St.Germain remains fabulous as the Fashionista as she helps Dashie out of a jam.

 

Ashleigh Ball continues to be awesome as Rainbow Dash.

 

Jan Rabson as Wind Rider sounded pretty good.

 

Kelly Sheridan returns as Sassy Saddles and  Misty Fly

 

While Sidika Larbes did great as Stormy Flare.

 

Fun to hear Matt Hill (Soarin) & Kelly Metzger (Spitfire) again.

 

It was pretty funny & hilarious at the same time.

 

Cant wait fer more.

Rainbow Dash can potentially be held accountable for actions she didn't commit, and was framed on, but she can't be held accountable for crashing into Twilight's library more times than I care to count, possibly damaging books, attempting to stop Winter, causing massive damages to Weather factory equipment, breaking and entering into a hospital, theft of a book from the premesis, breaking and entering into Daring Do's house, ect, etc

Could it be? A Rarity episode that I liked? (Well, Canterlot boutique was ok I guess) But my god, I loved this episode! The black and white sections reminded me alot of Chinatown (The movie, not the place) and really just any other crime investigation movie. I feel a little peeved that it was a wonderbolt that was the villain again and the other wonderbolts didnt really help until the end, but it didnt ruin the episode at all for me. there was a bunch of faces and moments that made me laugh so much, like Rarity's outfit chest and changing in like a millisecond, the hell? One of my fave episodes of the entire season so far, can't wait for next weeks episode, another rarity one I hear.

Finally here to give you my thoughts.

 

First off, very sad that we didn't get a Carmen Sandiego reference, since Rarity kind of looks like her in this episode. So have the theme song.

 

 

 

Now when it comes to the episode...i wish i could enjoy it as much as you guys, but i think it was just okay.

 

I kinda like the 40s-50s noire tone, with the black and white and the camera angles, which made me jump for joy as a movie fan. It was great that Rarity shares some screentime with Rainbow Dash, since they're such an unlikely couple, but they make it look good. And the continuity was nice.

 

The culprit was predictable, as most pointed out already. I don't have big problems with it if the journey to the finish is good, but there is one problem that made me scratch my head the whole episode. Since when does Rarity have any experience in being a detective? I really hate to be the party pooper here, but it dosen't make any sense for me. It kinda seems like that the writers just made her a detective just because.

 

You can prove me wrong if you want and maybe then i'll give it a better score. But as it stands, it's just okay. Not bad, but also not very good.

Just finished this episode and....WOW. Color me absolutely surprised. Color me black and white that is. Seriously, this episode was fantastic. The animation was top notch, the expressions from many of the ponies were hilarious, and Rarity was just amazing here. Not to mention the whole detective aspect, I think it was done flawlessly. Without going too deep into it, this might be one of my favorite episodes in the entire show and by far my favorite Rarity episode. 

 

Also, Rainbow called Rarity 'Rare', as odd as it may sound, they both made a really cute team together. :3 This is now one of my favorites of the season. I know my impressions are fairly simple but they are to the point I suppose.

A really fun episode. The mystery was no mystery at all but they never are in these shows without something completely unexpected like the end to Mmmmystery.

 

The mystery was an excuse for Rarity to be silly and act out a film noir. And I enjoyed how the clues with which she solved the mystery were presented, that was well done.

While he makes the point in concept, if the outcome can be seen from very early, it makes the journey within an episode feel wasted.

 

Agreed. To me, Jim's comment is akin to loading the bases at a game and then deciding to bunt on the last out.

Near the beginning when Rarity receives her delivery of cut rhinestones, and instead gets hoof polished ones. She then goes on to make the delivery pony give us one of the cutest pony expressions I have ever witnessed:

The animation was top notch

 

I forgot to mention this too - the animation and use of subtle lighting and lens effects were outstanding. One of the best animated episodes of the season!

I liked it too. A lot of the fandom refers to the Mane 6 with these pet names, so it's nice to see the characters doing the same.

I think it's just Rarity being herself; I'm not sure every mare would get a pass like that.

 

And she was totally not just getting her way through compliments like she claimed to Sassy - she's totally stroking that delivery pony's flank and shoulders! If she didn't stop when she did from the pic above he seemed like he was on the verge of doing his own special delivery...

I don't really hate this episode, but I don't like it either. I know a lot of people like this episode by the sounds of it, but to me it was just kinda disappointing.

The part where they explained how Rarity figured everything out was kinda cool, but that's about it.
