technology Better to leave a computer on all the time or turn it off?

As Fallout 4 is coming out soon and I'm only able to get it tomorrow. It means that I've only got 2 days to download it and with my crap internet that's a problem. Sadly I've only got a 250-300KB/s download speed so it would take me about an entire day to download fallout 4. I was going to get the disk version hoping i could download the entire game off it but I've just found out that the disk version for fallout 4 only has about 5GB on it, the rest you got to use steam to download. So my only other option is downloading it off steam.

This is where my question comes in, Since i'm going to have to download it by 2 days if i want to play it the day it's released then i will need to leave my computer basically on all night tomorrow and all day on Monday. This worries me since the last thing i want is my computer to break some how and leaving a computer on for that long without breaks sounds like it would break it though from a lot of people... it seems I'm wrong and it's better to leave a computer on all the time and isn't a problem at all to leave a computer on for that long.

So i want to know what you think?, Do you think it will be okay for me to leave my computer on for an entire night and day?

dont worry, computers are fine to leave on. I used my old PC as a minecraft server for several months and it didnt have a hard drive and half the fans inside it werent working properly. If all the machine is doing is downloading fallout, the internals shouldn't be getting too hot anyway.

Generally, I prefer to turn off the computer when I'm not using it for anything at all, but leaving it on should be fine, at least if it's not a laptop (from my experience, laptops overheat quickly, to the point where everything just turns off)

Nothing should happen to it. Though it's best to turn your computer off when not using it, leaving it on for a couple days shouldn't do anything.  :)

Well not even a couple of days, It's basically for about 24 hours

Not that I'm admitting anything, but if "Somepony" was using Bit Torrent, I'd, um they'd leave their computer on for days on end while "seeding" the torrent. Sometimes for over a week.

Well, if it's a frame of reference my dad's computer hasn't been off since 2007 except for power outages and it still works fine.

As for mine I turn it off or at least sleep mode it, but have left it on overnight for downloads before no problem.

Maybe not turn off you're computer but put it to sleep that shouldn't shut down any process's going on in the background like a download, webpages etc.

Putting it to sleep will suspend anything it's doing because the processor stops functioning.

ETA: If you do this you'll need to make sure your power options are set so that the computer doesn't automatically turn off.

You should only consider turning off the computer out of convenience or when the hardware is unnecessarily stressed. Leaving the computer on for multiple days won't hurt it unless you're running some stress testing software with a cheap motherboard and low quality power supply.
