movies/tv Kids cartoons getting PG rating

I've noticed that it seems to be coming the norm for kids cartoons, particularly the ones on Cartoon Network, to carry the PG rating. Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe, Teen Titans Go and Uncle Grandpa all carry this rating regularly, Gravity Falls pushes this rating, Spongebob occasionally carries this rating including both movies I think, even Friendship Games carried this rating in Canada. So are we just getting more sensitive or are kids just preferring edgier stuff now? Or is it a symptom of kids cartoons trying to appeal more to adults now aswell?

Well, kids cartoons and movies have always had small bits of adult humor. However, I think in recent years, children have really become aware of a lot of things earlier than even ten years ago. Just a thought.

I'd say it's definitely people getting much too sensitive. I mean, even movies getting a G rating is incredibly rare, but I can bet if today's PG movies appeared back in the day they'd normally get a G rating

I mean cartoons back in the day had things in 'em that were either just as bad or even worst, and some didn't get any higher than Y or Y7

Stuff like Adventure Time and Steven Universe I don't really think need the PG rating.

However something like Gravity Falls actually does.

I find it weird how some get PG ratings when I don't think they are that intense or whatever.

I'm totally fine with kid's cartoons becoming PG. In fact, I'm sure there are some G and even TV-Y rated things that should be rated PG. MLP should be rated PG because they sometimes appeal to the bronies by throwing in a few adult jokes and sometimes even the cloppers, from what I think I've seen.

It really shouldn't, the worst it's done is a few pop culture references.

Adult jokes in MLP? I'm only aware of a few, and they would completely fly over kids' heads. For example, kids wouldn't recognize the cameo of characters from The Big Lebowski.

And where has MLP appealed to cloppers? I really doubt that they'd do that.

It sort of appealed to cloppers in the episode Simple Ways, but it wasn't porn.

I don't buy that, they never do anything related to cloppers in the show.

It remains as it stands.

These days most of these shows are getting ratings like this because of

  • Words like "loser" infact in Regular Show, Rigby said this exact text "What the h is this s" which only aired in America. And romance.
  • Spongebob's morbid stuff, like those morbid faces. I can link you some if you really want.
  • Uncle Grandpa, I don't know why the heck that is rated PG.
  • Teen Titans Go, is the violence, yes, it is "violence". And romance.
  • Adventure Time has fight scenes in it. And mild romance.
  • Steven Universe has some lesbian overtones as well as child endangement. (Quote from EMT Brony).

Well the two-parters can get pretty intense.

I wouldn't be surprised with a PG rating for Twilight getting headbutted through a mountain.

I think you seriously underestimate what can be allowed in a kids cartoon

But PG just means Parental Guidance. Violence is part of what gets a show that rating.

G for General Audience includes very small children. I could see some very small kids being freaked out by Tirek.

I was scared of the cat from Cinderella when I was 3.

G/PG ratings are kind of a nonsense concept anyway. Every child is different so are scared by different things, so whether a film/show is rated Y, Y7, G or PG a parent would always be wise to know what exactly their kid is watching. By this logic only the most inoffensive pre-school shows should be allowed a Y rating. Gravity Falls for example has way more disturbing content than anything MLP has done yet is only rated Y7.

To start I'd like to point out that in Australia our ratings go G/PG/M/MA/R(General, Parental Guidance, Mature, Mature(15+), Restricted(18+)).

I see nothing wrong with the ratings of these cartoons. Putting Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe and Gravity Falls as PG is perfectly fine. G is a rating given that states anyone is fine to watch it. This includes infants, toddlers, and small children. Though infants and toddlers may be too young to care for the aforementioned shows, there are still some themes that may frighten other small children or be otherwise inappropriate.

The PG rating is nothing more than a conservative adviser anyway, so it's always up to the parent/adult to deem it fine or not fine. Classifications generally work on an episode-by-episode basis too, with the overall rating being sat at the highest mark(or within reason) of ratings across the episode. Even if most episodes are fine enough to sit in the G category(which would be few non-preteen/teen+ cartoons), a few PG episodes would bump up the overall ratings.

The ratings are designed to be conservative. It has nothing to do with kids not being able to handle things or parents going soft, yadda yadda. It's purely there to help people make more considerable decisions as to what is okay by raising the bar for anything questionable. Rather than the opposite of lowering the bar and having cases where a G audience views something PG that turns out to be inappropriate.
If it's a conservative rating, you're less likely to have inappropriate exposure.

This is an issue not only with animated series but with animated movies. It feels like everything needs to be PG nowadays. Whatever happened to the G rating? Are parents really that concearned for their kids that they now need parental guidance to watch almost everything? Most of the things that are rated PG really don't do that much adult things. I've seen things rated G and even Y do more adult things than them.

It's all these 'lil memers... they're trying to become dank gangstas: "Well I watch shows that are PG WITHOUT my mom!" they say as they pick a fight with someone twice as big as them.

"Welcome to the Salty Spatoon, how tough are yer?"

"How tough am I? I watch PG rated cartoons"

"Yeah, so?"

"Without my parents"

"Right this way sorry to keep you waiting"

I forgot about that episode. Are you referring to the part where Applejack eats an apple suggestively?
