What are you opinions on somepony having the same name as your OC?

This is an issue that's propped when I noticed that there are quite a few pony OC's sharing the same name , sometimes with similar backstories and cutie marks. Mine for instance, share the same name with an OC from DA however both have different personalities/backstories/cutie marks and were concepted without knowledge of the other.

On one of side of the spectrum there are people who say that ponies are like people, there are lots of Johns and Gennas in the world , why shouldn't ponies have similar names and cutie marks? as long as they have different origins , backstories , and are all in all completely different ponies shouldn't it be okay?

and on the other side there are people who feel offended that someone used a similar name, and one of them, usually the newest OC, has to change. afterall, in their opinion, it's an "OC" and if there were more than one it would lose it's originality

so I'd like to ask you,

what are your thoughts , If you found out that someone had named their OC similar to you, whether older or newer than your OC.?

I don't see a problem with it. As long as the person isn't deliberately ripping you off, I don't see a problem. When creating my own OCs, I try to be as original as possible and do some research to see if a name is already taken, but chances are, someone else has also thought of the name you want to use. So I don't know. I have an OC named Emerald Aura and she's awesome and probably my favorite pony ever, but I'm not going to change her if in the future I find someone with the same or similar name. I just don't think it really matters.

I don't think OC's with the same name is a serious problem at all, really. Like Sabrinie said:

Just like real-life, the name of a person (or in this case, a pony :P) doesn't matter. It's who they are in the inside that counts! :)

I suppose it depends on the situation.
I'm aware of a story where someone told someone else, point blank, "I'm going to roleplay as your character on another forum."
Obviously, that's not okay. It wasn't a request, or a question, it was a statement, and it was not cool.

If there were another Koukatsu floating around by dumb luck, which I find hard to believe in the fandom (though the name is often taken in other places, mostly games), I'd like to think I'd just be all "Meh, whatevs," but unless it actually happens, I suppose I'll never know.

Though, I was once shown this little fuzzball;

fluffy_pony_wants_hugs_by_bronyboy-d4u1l

Obviously, it looks quite similar to Koukatsu, save some details, but I'd never seen it in my life.

I messaged the artist who made it, and we had a little laugh over it, and both moved on. Completely unrelated, insane coincidence.

It's so hard to guarantee that a name isn't already taken, and designs are going to be similar sometimes just because of the size of the fandom. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as a character isn't damn near identical to another and obviously ripped off.

Would every pony in equestria have a completely original name? Ponies with the same name would probably less common then people with the same name, but it probably wouldn't be unheard of.

As long as you don't copy someones OC, then it is fine if the name is the same.

You could make the exact same case for cutie marks. Names and cutie marks both identify someone as being unique to them yet several background ponies in The Best Night Ever have the same cutie mark. Are Dr. Hooves' and Cologate's special talents the same or is it a time paradox? Copying an official name or cutie mark straight up, not cool, that is Hasbro's TM.

There is no OC registry, so it is impossible to prevent doubles whether intentional or otherwise.

I have, fortunately, yet to encounter another fan with the same OC name as mine. I also use it as my name in all my MLP fan activity, so it's not likely I will be mistaken for someone else, either. If someone did come up with an OC of the same name, however, well, if they're not actively trying to impersonate me or my OC, there's no harm done. I just have to be the best OC with that name out there. :)

It's unintentional. The creator may not even know that there are OCs with the same name out there unless (s)he does some digging (would you spend hours digging through deviantART, Derpibooru, and MLP Forums to see if your OC's name matches another?). I created an original character a few months back, gave her a name, personality, the works. I didn't believe my shock when, just last month, I stumbled upon an OC (a ponysona, no less) with the exact same name as my OC.

I just treat them like Wikipedia disambiguation pages: it is a fact that there will be OCs that share the same name, just ensure that they have unique appearances, unique personalities, and unique backstories!  :)

I don't mind in the slightest, as long as the other person isn't copying my OC.

This reminds me of the episode with Countess Coloratura. I think Applajack said something like, "Maybe it was a different Countess Coloratura." (dont quote me on that but I think she did say something like that!)

Meaning that there probably other ponies with the same name.
As for OC's, as long as they're different enough I dont see a problem with it. If they're super similar, they're probably too cliche in the first place, and probably need to be expanded on some more.
Even with things other than names too, like special talents and color schemes. There are only so many colors you can pick from, so there are bound to be some other OC's with similar color schemes. Just how it works!

One of my Oc's names is Echo, I know that Echo is a generic name but my Echo is a blind pegasus who uses echolocation to see the world around her. I haven't heard of any other PEGASUS pony like that

I've seen this happen to some people from time to time, but only recently had it happened to my OC Pristine. When I found another OC by the name of Pristine, I really didn't think much of it. I always like to think about everyone's OCs being in the same universe; if so many people have so many OCs, it's practically impossible to not have some with the same name. Of course it would make the world much more believable too. People in real life have the same name all the time! (I had an elementary class with 4 Jacobs) It may be a little disappointing at first when you find someone who has the same OC name, but it's never anything to raise torches over. It's just a thing that happens. I wish I would have became friends with that person, but I lost who they were a long while ago. That's just my opinions anyways.

@,

I decided to google Echo, to see how generic the name was, and turns out there's only 2 other echos ,

but this bat pony specifically just fills the page with it. o_o, apparently she's one of the first bat ponies ever created o_o

Oh that's pretty neat. Well it is normal for a bat to have echolocation. But my Echo is a blind pegasus
