general media Cliches That You're Tired Of

1. Suddenly making the good guys dumber/weaker just so the new bad guy seems so intelligent/powerful by comparison. This, in the eyes of more than a few, is the primary reason why Palpatine from Star Wars is so successful pre-Original-Trilogy.

2. Telling us that good and evil must be balanced out... but then just showing us good guys vs. bad guys in the end anyway. The Kingdom Hearts series is especially bad about zigzagging with this, whereas Final Fantasy III is a refreshing anti-example for a change.

That the final girl in horror films is a shy-ish single/virgin. You can usually tell straight away which people that will make it to the end of the film simply by looking at their personalities. Meh.

As A.V mentioned,

Worfing someone who is supposed to be the heavy hitter of the group to be much weaker just to make a villain look strong. Doing this too frequently can lead to many no longer being impressed by the worfed character or any villain beating him/her.

Ron the death eater, better known as when an unpopular character gets made into this wholly despicable character by fanon just to justify their hate for the character.

Broken Aesops as when I see it, it renders whatever point you tried to tell to the audience meaningless.

This story has a strong female protagonist! And so you know she's strong, her male sidekick is the most WORTHLESS WASTE OF SPACE YOU'LL EVER SEE. Or at the very least, a goofy joke.

I was dead until the moment I met you. I was a powerless corpse pretending to be alive. Living without power, without the ability to change my course, was akin to a slow death. The Evil-Twin-Appearing-Out-Of-Nowhere cliche.  :scots:

That's why  hated the newest book in the Millennium series, the one written by David Lagercrantz...

Craming in a forced love story that doesn't even relivence to the story. I always get taken out of the mood when in every horror, action, comedy and emotional story, there is a random romantic sceen out of the blue by two characters you wouldn't even think are friends.

Any type of steriotype what so ever (loud obnoxious cool kid, shy person who is also a coward, a character with no flaws and never looses…) When you see these chaters, you already know hoe the story is going to end.

The main protagonists surviving a helicopter/plane crash. In fact, almost every movie I've seen and games I've played, there is a random helicopter/ plane crash involved.

  • One thing I can't stand is the Simpsons family dynamic. It has been done to death to the point that we are exhuming the fuels made from its remains. Shows like this tend to have a bumbling father as the centerpiece and were the absolute norm in the late 90s and the whole of the 2000s. Many other character archetypes are associated with this as well, such as no-nonsense, overworked, and better-looking mothers, two insecure children, and the youngest child that's smarter than everyone else. Usually, this dynamic breeds a lot of lazy writing and sexist humor. Most shows seem to have thankfully moved away from this. However, although The Amazing World of Gumball has a great premise and is very creative with its humor, I cringe at how trite the Wattersons are and how well they fit the stereotype. In addition, Family Guy can't buy the farm soon enough.
  • Shock comedy for the sake of shock comedy, and not with any intent of commentary.
  • Merely naming or showing a celebrity or reproducing an old work and calling it "parody".
  • Using satire as an excuse to deflect criticism.
  • Gender stereotypes. Especially the "boys vs. girls" plotline, which is a very outdated way of portraying gender in kids/family media, as well as any work that uses a stereotypical portrayal of one gender to make the other look better. The latter refers to my next point.

  • I'd add to this: any work that neutralizes any character to make the mains or others look better. This happens in a lot of bad comedies, too, particularly ones based around popular celebrities or characters, where they drop them into a cliche-ridden setting with cliche-ridden, bland characters just for the sake of "social commentary" or "parody". It's a sign of deficient writing when everything has to be boring or Nerfed in some way in order for your main character/villain/focus to shine. The most egregious example I can think of is Achmed Saves America.

The Evil-Twin-Appearing-Out-Of-Nowhere cliche.  :scots:

When Gabranth was introduced in Final Fantasy XII, I actually started laughing.

Of course, he turned out to be more of a morally gray twin than an actual evil one, so at least there was something different.

The German scientist. We get it, nazis did experiments a long time ago, but we don't need to keep using that cliche any time we need an "evil" scientist. It's bordering racist.

I would have go with Easily Forgiven.

After Starlight Glimmer's character "redemption" in the season 5 finale I was officially burnt out on these concept.

Maybe sometimes I would like to see characters actually have to deal with consequences for their actions every now and again.

3. The Happy Ending Override trope. It's just a cheap and unpleasant way to create new drama, and it actually risks Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy more than anything else. Both The Force Awakens and Dream Drop Distance are particularly guilty in this regard -- way to crap on all my nostalgia just to sell new installments, writers.

4. Stopping a good guy from killing a bad guy because of the If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him trope -- even if: (1) the good guy only wants to do it to the bad guy himself instead of any innocent bystanders, and/or (2) the bad guy is a Complete Monster who will only exploit such mercy to screw even more people over in the future. Batman in particular can be something of a mixed bag with this, IMO, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is just downright cheap with it.

The overly stupid sidekick cliché...

Reminds me of one fanfic where they decided to actually make Spike-as-Humdrum more credible.

Basically, Rarity-as-Radiance cut his cape so he wouldn't trip over it any more, then used her object-making powers to give him an infinite supply of smoke grenades.

Good guys winning.

The fact that main bad guy/leader/boss etc. has this big fight with hero in the end but it always known who will win.

Most of main bad guy's minions/troops/etc. are most terrible fighters in the world and the leader is one of the best.

The unnecessary Sex or Love Scenes in almost every freaking Movie, Series, Animation...there is almost always a Love Story.

The worst things are Sex Scenes in Horror Movies, first off, shouldnt i get scared from a Horror Movie?

And whats the point in having a sex scene, if you dont show anything anyway? ( im not asking for uncensored Scenes, since i dont want to see them, i just wanted to point out, how useless i find them ) Why is it there? Why?

Sex Scenes are just awkward to watch for me...and feel way out of place.

Superhero finales that all take place in a busy city where everything gets destroyed. In Superman 2 (Christopher Reeve) the Man of Steel had the good sense to take the battle elsewhere, away from innocent bystanders.

I also hate post credit sequences that have the defeated badguy somehow coming back from an impossible to survive death, so they can toss out a sequel.

Deus Ex Machina. As much as I love action movies to death, when this happens, I go "pfft. I saw that coming."

It's when a hero and a villain do an intense fight, the villain beats up the hero, making him too weak to fight, then the villain decides to finish the hero off by shooting him, blowing a killer punch etc. but before the villain kills the hero, another hero kills the villain, saving the weak hero's life.

^The climax to almost every movie EVER. :okiedokieloki:

Any school boy/girl anime trope.

Ecchi.

Monologue while fighting.

Endless FlashbackS (I GET IT, JUST FIGHT EACH OTHER PLZ  :okiedokieloki: )

I dont know why i hate modern anime so much.  :orly: . The last anime i truly enjoy is Fate/Zero.
