Ah, Sonic. One of the most legendary video game characters out there with games we used to enjoy as colts. Not to mention the cartoons we used to watch like The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. You can't go wrong on how he made an impact in our world with his super speed. 

 

But, however things have gotten downhill for him since there are games that are considered BAD like Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 06 and the the notorious Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. Nevertheless, the fan base remained strong and created a lot of stories (some of them crossovers) and especially fan games. 

 

I think it was around that time where the hatred started to occur as there were Anti-Sonic comments and Anti-Sonic content aimed at the fan base. I know some ponies here love Sonic the Hedgehog (especially my best friend) but they shouldn't be treated that way. It's like the time we bronies were treated like that. Every fan base has the right to respect each other, not just go around causing conflicts with each other. You know what they say: Make peace, not war. (Boy, I sound like a pacifist when I say things like that.)

 

So, why is the Sonic The Hedgehog fan base disliked by many? Is it because of what Sonic is now? Is it the content fans create? Or maybe there are users who are on Dr. Eggman's side who want to get rid of Sonic for good?

The fanbase embodies a lot of what makes a terrible fanbase

 

- They can be incredibly whiney, never knowing what they want, and always complaining over something dumb(Sonic's eyes anyone?)

- They're responsible for the "recolored OC" joke you see made with other fanbases, as a lot of Sonic fans were well known for making recolors of the main characters and claiming them to be "original". Something even the Sonic Twitter makes fun of

- It's just a broken fanbase, with opinions literally everywhere and no one can agree where the franchise should go and instead they get at each others throats. Most fans usually have fans that fall into one of 2 or 3 categories, but with Sonic you can probably fall into one of one of like 9 or 10. Of course this is probably more Sega's fault than the fanbases

- They make really stupid shit sometimes, stuff that rivals the things you see in the MLP fandom. And not stupid in an intentional and funny way

- Simply put, a ton of Sonic fans can be...overbearing to say the least

 

And these are just the ones that come out of the top of my head. Of course not a generalization as there are really cool Sonic fans out there, but the fanbase just has a ton of problems that irritates others

IMO, one problem is many of them screaming, "BESTIALITY!" at a certain Sonic '06 scene... yet fangirling over Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, etc.

I'm a Sonic fan but I do think some members of the community can be a bit over-sensitive and annoying.

A lot of the Sonic fanbase has no idea what they want and don't like anything. Decent Sonic games are treated like trash most of the time, and nobody in the fanbase agrees at all on what the good games are. The fanbase acts like everything is awful and fight each other over all of it.

 

 That's not entirely the fans fault, there's so many versions of Sonic, it's no surprise they don't agree what they want. The Genesis games, Adventure games, Modern games all play and feel different, and people prefer different ones. Plus Spin-off media like the Archie comics, Fleetway comics, the old 90's Sonic cartoons or Sonic X all have hugely different versions of the characters and world and everybody has one they want to stick with.

 

 Course, there's also the "Sonic games suck, anyone who's a fan of them must have poor taste!" thing. People outside of the fanbase who just don't like the games and see all the bad press Sonic has got these days cause of poor games and think every fan of the franchise must be an idiot to like it. Even though a lot of those fans are probably aware of the poor quality, and are just trying to stay loyal to the franchise anyway because of what they love about it.

 

 The Sonic Fanbase isn't totally terrible, there's plenty of good people there, but nobody wants to pay attention to the good, they want to point out the whiners, or the idiots, or the Jerks. Same thing they do with the games, people skip over how good Colors and Generations were, ignore all the pretty good Handheld games like the Advance or Rush series, or focus on the negatives in games like the Adventure or Riders series without even bothering to give any of the positives a shot. Look...I used to hate the Sonic fandom myself...I still have a few gripes. "Baaaaah! Sonic Adventure 2 is the best game ever! No flaws at all!" "We want Sonic Adventure 3!" "Mario sucks!"

 

As a person who prefers Mario I hate how the Sonic fandom can be so ignorant at times...Without Mario, Sonic wouldn't exist and without Nintendo Sonic would be dead. And Sonic Adventure 2 isn't THAT great.

 

However...I don't think the Sonic fandom is that bad anymore...I think it's actually sort of improving. For one thing the Sonic fandom found a common enemy in Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric. And most other things about the Sonic fanbase I can complain about is old news...Like the green eyed Sonic vs. black eyed Sonic fiasco from years ago.

 

One time I expressed how I hated how Sonic fans bash Mario for lack of character when Mario is meant to be neutral in personality so the player can identify with him...Sonic may have more personality than Mario but Sonic isn't a deep fleshed out character at all...He's style over substance.

I see. So it seems the Sonic fan base just wants to stick with one thing only and not handle changes. That's what made those people outside the fan base dislike those that are inside the fan base.

 

It's quite a shame really that people ignore the positive things of Sonic the Hedgehog like Sonic Advance and Sonic Generations you've mentioned.

I think People hate the Sonic Fandom, for the same Reasons, as to why they are hating the Mlp Fandom.

I think People despise the Fanbase, because of what they hear or read about and i think some of these People never actually saw some of the bad Fans and just jump on the hate wagon because...well, thats what a lot of other people do.

 

Im pretty sure that, if you would never even search for the " bad stuff ", that you would rarely ever see it.

The Haters make a big deal out of it, People jump on and then it just gets a thing.

Seriously, some Haters annoy me way more, than any of the bad Sonic Fans could ever do because some Haters never shut up about it.

The Sonic fandom is no different to any other fandom, or religion, social interest group or indeed any other group of people at all.  The one thing that all groups of people have in common is that the public perception of the group is inevitably defined by that small, loud minority.  The ones who whine the loudest, who do the cringiest things, who make the biggest fuss about the smallest things and who show the least tolerance and understanding of anyone that doesn't agree with whatever their views or agenda may be.

 

The exact same applies to furries, athiests, bronies, Christians, feminists, Muslims, Undertale fans... I could go on but you get the idea.  It is always the case that you have that small, obstreperous minority, the toxic element, poisoning the public view of the group a s whole.

 

Of course that is only half of it, the other half is that the outsiders, the general public, know nothing more about whatever group than what they see in newspapers, on the TV, or interweb forums, which is generally only the most negative side of the group, because it is only that toxic element that project themselves onto the public consciousness in that manner and the media is always more interested in showing the train-wreck side of a group than the positive side.

I love Sonic, but I think part of it comes from how cringe-inducing the newer games are to some and how the new fans love them.  Sega tries way too hard to be "way past cool" and "down with the kids" and instead of just giving Sonic a fun attitude, they think adding stupid gimmicks will do the trick.  So we end up getting a fanbase full of young children, this isn't bad, but since this is the type of Sonic they grew up with, they'll get upset if you criticize a the new Sonic, which is part of their childhood.  And once the flame wars start about things like how Sonic 3 was sooo much better than Sonic Rush, onlookers will think "How immature!  The Sonic fanbase is awful!"

 

Not to mention, the recolors.  My goodness, the recolors.

Just because we don't like generalizing people doesn't mean we can't point out legitimate and endemic flaws in the Sonic fanbase. They're pretty clear and identifiable. There's two major problems.

 

For one, Sega in part brought this upon themselves by constantly trying to reinvent the main Sonic franchise with virtually every new installment, in contrast with Mario's many successful sub-franchises. As others here have said, this has brought upon a massive case of Broken Base factionalism, with so many fans clinging to an absolutist interpretation that every game must be like their favorite game. Since fans disagree heavily on which games or characters are the best, there's little hope of reconciliation, and that ties into the second problem.

 

The most unfortunate thing, and I hate to bring up generalizations, is the demographic makeup of the fandom, which leads to many of the negative actions typically associated with the fandom. It is largely made up of kids who are too young for the Internet, or adults who are nostalgia-obsessed and, to be painfully honest, have a mental disability or other issues going on in their lives and probably shouldn't be on the Internet unsupervised. They tend to be overly emotional, have poor social skills, and live through fictional characters as a result. This "vocal minority" isn't a minority in this fandom. It's legitimately hard to find a decent, respectable person in the Sonic fandom without running across these kinds of people these days. Their works are everywhere, and make themselves and everyone associated with them look like fools as a result.

 

Naturally, you find some of the same kind of people in the MLP fandom, and some of the perception issues dealt with here are the same, but there is a still a strong contingent of respectful and decent fans. Likewise, the Sonic fandom still has a number of respectful, creative, and talented people, but they unfortunately seem to be the minority. More kudos to them for sticking through it.

From personal experience:

 

The games have gone downhill in quality and that contributed a lot. Sega started trying to make Sonic "edgy" and that turned a lot of people off. On top of this, it's a fandom that is notorious for being very "whiny" and produces a TON of porn.

Being a huge sonic fan, I think it's because of the creators, and the fanbase itself. Though most of the hate is absolutely blind, they literally hate the whole franchise because Sonic 06 was a thing, or Shadow The Hedgehog, just any game they hate, there have been countless games, yet there is 1 or 2 they hate and that makes the whole franchise garbage. Makes sense. 

 

Except that, the furry fanbase receives a lot of hate. Again, because someone masturbates to sonic hentai that means that every other fan does the same thing, and that automatically means that Sonic is bad. I'm pretty sure this is how MOST (not all) of the haters work, lol. Very rarely do I see an actually good point being made about Sonic games being "bad" in general.
