spoiler Did everyone feel sorry for Chrysalis? Or sorry for Starlight?

One thing that really stuck with me after the finale... The scene where Chrysalis runs off and rejects a chance to resent her usual ways. When Twilight came over to comfort Starlight for being upset....Same for everyone really. But do the Mane 6 and Princesses really feel bad for Chrysalis? Or were they just comforting Starlight?

Chrysalis put everyone through so much and tried invading Canterlot twice. If they're willing to forgive Discord twice... Does Chrysalis qualify for their sympathy?

I'm pretty sure they were just coming over to comfort Starlight.

As for if any of them felt bad for Chrysalis...I think that depends. I can't see Discord feeling bad for her, Shining and Cadance probably hate her guts, some of the others like Dash and AJ are probably just really angry. But I could see some of them still feeling sorry for her despite everything. With how convinced Twilight has become of Friendship being the answer, she might feel a bit bad for the Queen, maybe Luna might have a bit of sympathy, as she was that far gone once too.

None of them voiced their thoughts, so we can't really know for sure what any of them were thinking.

Why hello MLPForums! What have ya been up to?

Probably bad for Starlight... She managed to do the impossible with her reformed friends (Thorax being a bit special), gave it everything she got and even tried to prevent someone from making the same mistake she did, proving her growth... only to be denied. That clearly stung, so they hug her.

As for the others... probably angry and the like, or distressed for the changelings. Seeing Starlight try to reform Chrysalis must have rung some "hello, friendship is magic, remember?" bells inside of their heads, though.

It was probably Starlight feeling bad for Chrysalis, which saddened her and then the others came to comfort Starlight. Sort of a chain reaction. If I were starlight I would be pretty sad too. The changelings now have a way to end their supposed 'endless hunger' and Chrysalis rejected help, meaning she will still feel this hunger and possibly more now. That could be close to torture.

I feel bad for Chrysalis because she's "blind". She can't really see what's right for her people.

I legit thought she was gunna take Starlight's hoof but when she didn't I was shocked. It would've been awesome to see a good Chrysalis but I was also glad they didn't turn another villain good (we havent seen enough evil Chrysalis)

I'm siding with Starlight on this. Chrysalis has twice now tried to invade Equestria:

  • Tried to conquer Canterlot by kidnapping and disguising herself as Cadance, brainwashing Shining Armor, turning the Mane Six and Celestia against Twilight, then when her cover was blown, overpowered Celestia and had her put into a cocoon, while her drones terrorized Canterlot after destroying Shining Armor's shield. Chrysalis screwed up there by getting distracted by the carnage, allowing Twilight to free Cadance, who breaks Chrysalis' spell on Shining Armor, and the future parents are able to fling Chrysalis and her Swarm out of Canterlot and Equestria with the power of their love.
  • After regrouping from the Royal Wedding defeat, waits until Starlight is out of Ponyville, then systematically takes revenge on the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony by kidnapping all of them when they are most vulnerable, at night, when they are asleep, replaces them with drones to harvest Equestria's love for them, and takes them back to her hive to imprison all of them in cocoons like with Celestia at the Royal Wedding, along with having a throne that prevents all non-Changeling magic from being utilized within the Changeling Kingdom's borders, essentially preventing the Royal Family from freeing everyone with their magic and preventing any rescue team from using theirs. This time, Chrysalis had pretty much won as she only needed to wait until she had enough love from Equestria for the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony to launch her second invasion, and the country would be hers in less than a day. This time, her decision to ignore Starlight since she wasn't as loved as the Royals or Mane Six were proved to be the fatal flaw in her plan as Starlight is able to convince Thorax into giving his love energy willingly, sending Chrysalis flying into her throne and cracking it, and convinces the Swarm to turn on their Queen to end their hunger once and for all, resulting in the destruction of Chrysalis' throne and freedom of the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony once more.

They've had to deal with Chrysalis' crap twice now, and what she pulled this time was the last straw because of how dark and underhanded it was, and the looks on the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony made it clear that with the Swarm pretty much on their side now, they were willing to protect them in return for freeing them, and finally give Chrysalis what she deserved for putting them through so much Hell. However, they were willing to be merciful to allow Starlight a chance to ask Chrysalis one more time to repent, and when Chrysalis refused it and fled, though they joined Starlight to watch Chrysalis flee and chose not to pursue her, they all knew that at least, for now, Chrysalis' revenge against them and threat to Equestria was dead and buried for the time being, and they now knew she was still out there so they would be ready for her next time so if she was still the witch that she was shown to be already, it would be a one-way ticket straight to Tartarus. No second chances, no mercy, no nothing.

Twilight comforting Starlight was just to show that perhaps some villains can't be redeemed while their followers can and Twilight knows from experience that you can't win them all.

They just didn't want Starlight to take it so hard. They've known Chrysalis for much longer than she has and realize she's beyond anyone's help. Twi was proud of her regardless.

As for Chrysalis, no way. By now I think they have officially had it with her shit. They looked ready to evicserate her right then and there before Starlight butted in. Why they let her get away, I have no idea, but whenever she starts acting up again, they all deserve a shot at some payback with her.

So there's no 'middle' punishment'? Why not the Canterlot dungeon before Tarturus? They could at least try to rehabilitate her in Canterlot first.

They came to comfort Starlight, but I am sure they all felt pity for Chrysalis and the path she has chosen.

Was that before or after she kidnapped them and before she put them into the cocoons that they felt pity for her, but accepted being cocooned anyway because they understood Chrysalis' decision to follow the dark path she had chosen?

Agreed. Two invasions plus kidnapping Equestria's Royal Family and Elements of Harmony the second time out of revenge? That pretty much puts Chrysalis into the category for "Villains Who Cannot Be Redeemed And Must Be Condemned To Tartarus" in the eyes of the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony, and now that they know she's still out there, they will be ready for when she returns so they can get some much deserved payback on her for what she's put them through.

They don't have to like her, or feel sorry for her or anything of the sort. In fact they can outright loathe her for her actions.

But they can still feel pity at her failure and her determination to cling on to such a wasted emotion as vengeance instead of doing something positive with her self and her subjects.

Twilight and the others hating Chrysalis? Yes. Celestia, I always viewed as being above that. Even in the real world, we cannot explain how evil actions form. We know a great deal of it comes from internal anguish and some dysfunction. But evil  people always think they're doing the right thing. At the end of the episode, Chrysalis showed she only cared for herself.. Gone is the headcanon of her being a loving mother. At this point... She resents friendship.

When Starlight offered her hoof in friendship to Chrysalis, she rejected her and it became clear that even some villains don't change like Starlight. Maybe she felt that there was still good in Chrysalis and just like even herself in that shoe, she wanted do what's right for just how Twilight helped her found friendship. Starlight portrayed a very important step towards her lesson in friendship to spread and to help others in need but as soon as she realized in that forgiveness is not for everyone she felt like she failed in what she's suppose to do. Experiencing once already the feeling to lose of a friend she couldn't afford to let another potential friend go away even though it's the enemy. In the end, everyone felt her remorse as she was once just like Chrysalis too.

That makes a lot more sense. While the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony might hate Chrysalis' guts for everything she's done to them and Equestria, they can still take pity, knowing that she's wasting her life on trying to get revenge on everyone who's wronged her when she could do something good for the benefit of Equestria instead.

Indeed, but that does not mean that the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony are willing to forgive Chrysalis anytime soon for what she's put them through. They may share Starlight's pain of losing a friend because of Starlight having been like Chrysalis herself once, but that does not mean they are going to simply let bygones be bygones and let Chrysalis off the hook that easily after having put them through Hell twice now.

There is a line from another show I used to enjoy despite others hating it.

"They did worse than hate you... they pitied you."

Pity as a word may mean mercy, but it can also be used to convey someone is not even worth the effort of contempt.

Sounds like good advice, but there's always the case of how instead of wanting to rip Chrysalis apart for what she's put them through, the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony were simply returning a favor to the Swarm for switching sides and freeing them from their cocoons. The Swarm make up for kidnapping them by switching sides and freeing them from the cocoons, the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony return the gesture by protecting them from their former Queen.

I stumbled upon this gif:

1267936__safe_twilight+sparkle_rainbow+d

In it, we can quite clearly see everyone was ready to go at it, aside from Starlight. Note the frowny eyes,  the horns shining with magic. Shining Armor especially was raring to go.

So this does seem to fit with the idea that they comforted Starlight and perhaps felt sorrow or pity that Chrysalis took the path she did. But I'd say that when she returns, they'll sure be ready for a fight more than welcoming her. If she wants to turn over a new leaf, she'll have to prove it to them.

Now to cross my fingers for a well-handled reformation! After one confrontation at the very least, of course.

If they're gonna reform her.... make it clever. Starlight's reformation in my opinion was the worst. Sunset and Discord actually had it handled right.

I think this one works a little better for what you were talking about:

Sunset's reformation, handled right? Okay, just...no. I agree for Discord's, but not Sunset's. One moment she's putting on the crown on after having been a jerk throughout the film, then she takes a rainbow lazor to the face and all she says is "I'm sorry, I didn't know there was another way...". How is that handling a reformation right?

I'm not saying Starlight's has been handled right, but neither has Sunset's. How they've both been trying to fit in after their reformation, now that's another story.

Sunset had three movies to really reform. That's what the transformation in Friendship Games symbolized. Even in Rainbow Rocks she wrestled with her own insecurities while trying to help the HuMane5 and Twilight stop the sirens.

Well she's long been reformed at that point. By 'reformation', I hear the moment one chooses to turn over a new leaf. After that, it's trying to fit in and atone. So to me, it's when Sunset is in that crater that her reformation takes place. And I don't find it anything convincing. Sunset trying to atone and fit in is, though. And it's made many a brony love her.
