We have currently a heatwave in germany (especially in the western parts of germany were we have 35°C) and I totally feel like Seafoam here. So, I decided to make that vector. The base was a screenshot of her from the short "sundae sundae sundae".

I've been a big fan of the background ponies in this show, from the popular ones like Derpy, to even the lesser known ones. They can have some really neat designs that sometimes even rival those of the main/side characters, and giving these background ponies their own personalities and stories is a fun aspect of the fandom.

Besides Derpy, two of my favorite background ponies are Cloudchaser and Flitter. These two were first shown in the fantastic episode "Hurricane Fluttershy" along with many other new, cool looking pegasus background ponies. Not only do these two both have great designs, but they even had a couple of speaking roles, which is something not all background ponies have had. While it's unfortunate that these two didn't get more appearances, at least the few they had were good.

As the series went on, more cool background ponies were added. Here are a few examples, including Cotton Sky, who has one of the most unique mane and tail designs in the series (she also even has a speaking role).

Not many good things came out of season 8 in my opinion, but there were a lot of cool new background ponies added. I wish we could have gotten these characters under better circumstances or even gotten them earlier than all the way in season 8, but oh well. Here are some examples of these background ponies:

All this is just scratching the surface on how many interesting looking background ponies there were throughout the series. Unfortunately since the series is over, we won't be getting any more of these great G4 background ponies. While I have my doubts, due to it being 3D, hopefully G5 will still be able to continue this trend of having cool and interesting background ponies.

The three weather pegasi who appeared "Tanks for the Memories" for the pony name gag all have cool designs (Sunshower, Clear Skies, and Open Skies). They are definitely an example of how background pony designs were really starting to improve, and really showed the potential when it came to new background ponies. It's a shame that the series didn't really have an episode that almost fully take place in Cloudsdale other than sonic Rainboom. If we did get another Cloudsdale episode and if all new Cloudsdale background ponies had interesting designs like these three, than the location could have a background pony collection that rivals that of Las Pegasus, Canterlot, and the School of Friendship.

Clear Skies (the pony in the middle) also had a couple of appearances in the 2017 movie, one of which greatly showcases the movie's great flying animation.

Going back to season four's "Rainbow Falls", is another example of the improving background pony designs. While there are a few examples of cool new background ponies introduced in this episode, two that stand out are the Cloudsdale cheerleaders: Spring Step and Lilac Sky.

Once again this shows the great background pony potential that Cloudsdale had.

That's right, his cloud-like mane and tail were very unique and I think this was the first, and maybe only, time that a pony's mane and tail looked like they were made of cloud. He also made some appearances along with a small speaking role in the episode "Princess Spike" as one of the delegates (maybe as a delegate for Cloudsdale).

Yeah, that time when Rarity actually had her mane made of cloud probably doesn't count.

Also, most of the delegates from that episode don't get much appreciation, which is too bad, because there are some great designs there.

Yeah that is true. Those delegates are an example of how season 5 really stepped it up when it came to background pony designs.

The future Equestria shown in "The Last Problem" had some strange aspects in my opinion, but at least we got one last chance of seeing some more Background Ponies, new and old. Here are some of the notable examples of cool new background ponies shown in the series finale:

Derpy also got one last appearance in the finale, and she is still Ponyville's awesome, cute and clumsy mailmare.

Once again, I hope that G5 will have some cool background ponies just like G4 did.

Here a self made picture of four Canterlot Unicorns while they celebrate carnival. Each of them represent some different regional sort of carnival.
- Cayenne represents Carnival in Rio 
- Citrus Blush represents Mardi Gras from New Orleans
- Moonlight Raven represents Carnival in Venice
- Sunshine Smiles represents Carnival in Cologne and the Rhineland (the carnival in my region)

While Tell Your Tale's actual quality is highly debatable, it does bring with it some new background ponies. While the G5 movie didn't impress me with its background ponies (due to being very generic and copy and pasted), TYT has already introduced some interesting background ponies that have some potential. Here are some from the episode Zipp's Flight School:

Out of these four ponies, the one that interests me the most is Fifi. She seems like she might be G5's version of Derpy in Design, Occupation, and maybe even personality. She also looks very similar to a certain background pony who appeared in The Last Problem (There is an image of her in one of my previous posts in this thread). I wonder if Fifi's design was heavily inspired off of that character, along with potentially being inspired off of Derpy.

Out of this batch, the one that interests me the most is the pony with the fire colored mane. Similarly to Fifi, it would be cool for this character to get some more screen time.

I also think that Windy is a cool background pony. While her fear of daisies was random, it gave her a funny character dynamic that actually played a part in the episode she is in. In addition, it is cool to see that some of the background characters from the movie are returning. Hopefully this character will continue to get screen time as this generation goes on.
