If you build an army with ponies to go for war. Which race would you choose?

I would have to align myself with my fellow Unicorns. We have so much power! Not much in the way of food growing abilities though so that could be an issue. The pegasi of course have the speed and sky advantage so we would have to be extra careful.

Well, to be fair, most of these 'military/war' themed ponies in the show are the Pagasi, however, I'd have to go with the Unicorns.  Yes, they may be overused/over-picked for these kind of questions but the question isn't about which is more or least popular, the question is about which race one would choose for a war.  Of course, I'm going to go with what I feel could be most efficient for the job in question (In my personal view).  They're very versatile in what they can do and can likely fend off a war the best, passively or aggressively.  So, yes, I do have to go with the Unicorns as well.

Given ponies like Starswirl, Twilight, Sunset, and Starlight, these unicorns can be really powerful and be a force to reckon with due to their insane magical abilities.

Plus at this point, with ponies like Sunburst and Celestia having a school for gifted unicorns, ponies who special talent is magic isn't as rare as we were first lead to believe.

So the potential to create a really strong army of unicorns would be there.

I would gather a bunch of different creatures from around Equestria and unite them under one banner 

Armed Creatures of Equestria (ACE)

there would be two separate Corps, one ground, one air here how it would be laid out

 

Ground Strike Company (GSC)

Comprised of Unicorns and Earth ponies

Sub Divisions

     Short Range Strike and Defend division (SRS/D)

     One on One close range combat, this is their job.

 

     Asset Denial And Retrieval (ADAR)

     Trained in destroying assets that may be of value to hostile forces, and securing an asset that may prove value to friendly troops such as ammo and food stores.

 

     Unicorn Combat Support Division (UCSD)

     Unicorns trained in long range Destructive magic, as well as anti-air magic.

 

     Unicorn Medical Support Division (UMSD)

     Unicorns trained in short range recovery magic.

 

Airel Strike Company (ASC)

Pegasi Drakes and Griffons trained for Air to Air as well as Air to ground combat.

 

    Long Range Strike Division (LRSD)

    Flying creatures trained to fly long distances and strike a hostile force.

 

    Short Range Fast Strike Division (SRFSD)

    Flying creatures trained to fly Fast and deliver a large amount of damage quickly.

 

    Airel Recon Division (ARD)

    Flying creatures that scout out an area and provide targeting data for UCSD Forces.

 

    Airel Support Division (ASD)

    Flying creatures that are more focused on providing support in the form of supplies and care packages

 

That's how I would set stuff up, I just realized how much time I wasted.

Even though I really wouldn't want to go up against the destructive magic of unicorns, if we can simply defend the food, water and medicine supply, I think it's gonna be a short war.

If I could only pick one race of ponies for warfare I'd go with Unicorns. Besides having a broad range of magical attack abilities they also have defensive magic as well. Pegasi can do a lot from the sky but their defenses are decidedly more limited.

This actually depends entirely on the circumstances of the war. Is it a singular foe like King Sombra, a flexible army like the Changelings, or humans?

Let's not forget, even with all the racial advantages, most unicorns won't have anywhere near Twlight's abilities (when she was a unicorn), nor will most earth ponies or pegasi have the abilities of Rainbow Dash and Applejack. 

I will say that in an extended war with limited resources, I'd place my bets on the earth ponies. They have the most affinity to nature and are the most efficient at growing food, which is a highly underrated talent and arguably more valuable than their innate strength. Earth pony strength and overall dexterity plays more into their ability to mass produce at a consistent and high rate. The US didn't win World War 2 because they had superior firepower or air force. Nope.  They simply had and produced far more resources than Germany, Japan and Italy ever could.

Ahem... Excuse me? Yes, the US was supplying munitions and such, but they've been gone from the big European war theatre for a big part of the war nuking Japan. Russia did most with Germany and Italy with with Brittain in second and the US being estimated by me in 3-4. The US did not win. The allies won. It was a coordinated effort made by all countries.

I would choose pegasi if we had modern weapons and tactics AKA guns. A sniper on a cloud would do a great deal, a flying heavy machine gun would do some too and the bombers would do a lot too. In what we are lacking in we can compensate trough mechanics. If there is only medieval stuff, I choose the unicorns for compensating trough magic. A teleported could teleport food and for the pegasi they could bring food in flight. And I doubt a tree could grow that fast and remain alive, not in the heat of battle.
