movies/tv Most underrated Disney movies.

Having just this weekend marathoned all six Tinkerbell films, I feel they're worthy of a mention here.  I had seen the first three previously, but not the last three.

They don't seem to be held in the same regard as the big ticket Disney films, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised at how good they are, there really isn't a bad one amongst them.  I think they definitely deserve to be right up there with some of the best offerings from the house of mouse.

I think most Disney films are overrated as hell. While I wouldn't really call it underrated, The Black Cauldron is a bit of a forgotten film.

Technically, Disney owns Studio Ghibli.

So I have to go with my favorite movie.

Porco Rosso.

No they don't. Disney distributed a couple of Ghibli's films from 96 onwards to countries outside of Japan, which is a minority of Ghibli's audience.

Atlantis and Treasure Planet! They are some of my favourite Disney movies and they are so underrated it hurts.

Also, any 3D computer-animated movie that came out after Frozen.  :scots:

Number one most underrated Disney movie is the Rescuers Down Under. It almost surpasses the visuals of the later 2D drawn animations of the 2000s. The soundtrack is awesome, the villain is one of the best Disney ever created and also very realistic! AND OMG the flight scenes!!!! I just love that film!

For later movies, Treasure Planet is hugely underrated as well! One of my all time fave Disney movies. I utterly love the designs for the tech, landscapes and aliens. Ben is a little OTT, but the other Characters make up for him. One of the best Long John Silvers ever made too.

I also want to make a little note about Atlantis, which is the most forgotten Disney film along with the Black Cauldron. Its really nice to see Disney take a different route with its animated films. Its clear they had a new load of animators in this film, but I felt they missed out on chances to make it into an epic film. They didnt put too much into it and the films overall feel is quite underwhelming. I never saw it on the big screen, it may have been better then, but its just doenst compare with action scenes in the later films.

One 3D animated film thats also overlooked is another of my all time faves and that is BOLT! Its the one thing I dont hate Miley Cyrus doing. She was really really good as the voice of Penny!

I love the Truman show style story, the jokes are brilliant, the score is super and there are no characters or scenes I hate. It also made my cry the first time I saw it. Just love it, but it also got shoved into the archives with the other not so well known films.

Can you tell Im a Disney nut? I refrain from including Live Action and Direct to video films, I'll save that for later.

From the official animation canon (in chronological order):

  • The Three Caballeros (1944)
  • The Sword in the Stone (1963)
  • The Jungle Book (1967) - this one because while it's still a classic, I see more people pushing it away in favor of the remake (which I thought was just alright)
  • The Rescuers (1977)
  • The Fox and the Hound (1981)
  • The Great Mouse Detective (1986)
  • The Rescuers Down Under (1990)
  • The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
  • Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001)

Live-Action (also in chronological order):

  • The Absent Minded Professor (1961)
  • That Darn Cat! (1965)
  • The Happiest Millionaire (1967)
  • The Love Bug (1968)
  • Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971)
  • Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

I would say ultimately is Treasure Planet.  Best disney animation and for being most non-glamorous. We need a live action movie of it.

For the animated films, the most underrated but excellent ones are Treasure Planet, Atlantis and Rescuers Down Under.

For the live action ones, the most underrated is The Black Hole.

I agree with you on both the animated and live action. The Black Hole may have been accused of getting bogged down with too much dialog at times, or more recently not getting the science correct, but those complaints miss that this film has some deep metaphysical shit going on underneath it.

Treasure Planet, along with Atlantis come to mind. Both fantastic movies, Imo. The Captain in Treasure Planet was rather umm..sexy as well with her British accent and all..

I still feel Hunchback of Notre Dame is still one of the most underrated least talked about Disney movies. Its very unusual for Disney to directly confront mainstream religious themes let alone ones of lust, torture and the relationship to god. It felt like a movie that Disney didnt hold back on in terms of what they would convey to the audience and for that I liked it alot more than many of the others around that time.

Rescuers Down Under was another underrated film since it came out during Home Alone and Rocky V. It was sequel to a film that was very underrated as well so no one really heard of it until it came out on VHS and started getting some praise.

Atlantis: The lost empire I liked WAY more than I thought I would. I never saw it in theaters like most others and only heard "meh" things about it but almost all the characters really stood out beyond their tropes and felt much more fleshed out. The story while meh and the visuals while meh still allowed me to enjoy it much more than I thought I would have.

The Brave Little Toaster is underrated or at least obscure in my opinion. I seldom see it mentioned when talking about Disney movies.

I think the animation was great, but the movie did have quite a bit of darkness to it.
