Fair; before they became one of the Young Six their life was really depressing.

Grampa Gruff was solving multiple problems when he dumped them at the school - He got a griffin as the token school member they wanted, they got rid of an unwanted, familyless griffin from their village, and, from Gally-birb's point of view, they were given an opportunity to start over with a clean slate - a new home, a group of AMAZING friends, and eventually, a role in Equestrian society once they graduate.

Which is one of the reasons I am so surprised they are so negative in the show - they pretty much won the lottery on this one, and just need not not mess it up.
