For in-universe answer, me (unicorn Will Guide) and my Changeling met in the EverFree Forest. He was dying; I was losing my memories and was in a daze. Still I wanted to help the poor creature.

I made a wish and the Changeling became part of me, even though I would forget about him for a while until Flurry Heart's Crystalling.

True love is being with someone who not only share similar interests with you, but also someone who is willing to help you improve on your faults. I've been told that people don't just get married for their similarities in their partner; rather, they get married to help improve upon each others flaws.
