Today, the world has lost a great mind, and an even greater human being. 

Groundbreaking physicist Stephen Hawking passed away earlier today. Known as much for his work in regards to the study of space, time and black holes as much as his ability to accomplish it all persevering through ALS. Though not quite as well known is his sense of humor and the ability to light up whatever conversation he is having. 

May his legacy live on.

Sad to see such a brilliant mind pass.

He would have been proud of our accomplishment this year, when every telescope in the world comes together to photograph Sagittarius A, the central supermassive black hole at the galactic center. His theories on black holes were incredible in understanding the universe more.

He will be deeply missed...

I loved this scene. I read somewhere that Stephen Hawking took great delight in playing a holographic representation of himself on "Star trek: The Next Generation"

I remember when this was in the news. I teared up. For just a moment, he was freed from his body.

this is significant because stephen hawking was the only mind in modern times comparable to Einstein. His discoveries/theories have been invaluable to science- losing him means losing our greatest 'light' in the dark, intellectually.

I discovered recently his work and I liked it a lot. He had a really specific way to explain his theories with simple concepts. A great man, a remarquable teacher. One of the few who open a door to his scientific domain and gladly welcome you with great enthusiasm.

He dies on the same day Albert Einstein is born; he died on Pi day; he was one of the greatest scientists of our time; the scientific world just lost one of it's greatest minds. He also never gave up dispite his situation.

I will not even pretend that I followed his scientific exploits and that I was familiar with any of his theories.

 

However, I do can appreciate a great mind. Especially one that can achieve so much against all the odds and don't give in to his own weaknesses.
