Volunteering Experience

Rather simple. Have you done any volunteering or other non-paid work for an organization, company or group? Give us the breakdown on the who, how and why you did so :3

I've so far accumulated over seventy hours working in the Peace and Justice Center, a small shop that sells products from around the world. These products are collected from vendors, or, very large, international companies that redistribute those products from farmers, merchants and other people in developing countries like Africa, and aid these artisans by widening their market and working with them to better establish a business. They do this in support of Fair Trade, as opposed to Free Trade. Fair Trade, unlike Free Trade, promotes rights, fair pay, fair working conditions, and environmentally friendly bi-products all along the supply chain. So that everyone from the guy in Africa making a small piece of your product, to the guy assembling the finished product in a factory in China, all get fair treatment.

I originally started because my school made it mandatory to have forty hours of community service in order to graduate. But after I reached that amount, I fund to enjoy the small store, and my boss, that I've decided to continue volunteering there until I get myself a real job that I need to focus on.

Every year I go and help clean my town on Earth Day. Pretty much the whole town goes out with trash bags and cleans the streets.

I've been to a few "Relay for Life"s. Which is a walk for cancer. I do it because my family has a long history of cancer and my dad is a 6 time survivor.

Also, helped out my church on a few public events when I used to go. Had to do various odd-and-ends to get community service hours for school.

Well its nice to hear you enjoy volunteer work :)

Rarely do you hear that today :(

I do volunteer work myself.

Mainly for the local Air Show ;)

Helping them organize the events, getting the news out there. And then on the days of the show helping around at getting people help if they need help.

Its fun, early work (need to be up at 4:30 AM) on the days just to get this ready. The reward is great though. ^_^

6 times? That's incredible. I've never heard of someone having it and defeating it so many times. Good for him!

Earth Day town clean-up sounds like a great idea, but I don't know if it's something our town does around here. There's crap on the side of the highway all the time. It'd be nice to get the community together to work on something like that. Hmmmm...

Ya, it's ridiculous.

It's mostly for the schools but, I see a bunch of other people doing it too. I guess they have prizes or something and raffles for cleaning supplies as well as spreading awareness for keeping the town clean.

I've worked at the food bank, dug up trees, and intimidated educated young children. Clearly, I am modest yet awesome to no end.

So far I've volunteered at the veterans hospital and the soup kitchen. Both good times. The veterans hospital gave me some time to meet some nice people.

I had to do 100 service hours for school. And if I were to not complete them, I would fail a course. So yeah

I worked for Habitat for Humanity for 2 weeks and 2 days, building a house in the 7th ward near New Orleans. It was pretty brutal, and the best part was that a 5 year old little girl had gotten shot and killed two blocks away from our work site about 15 minutes after we left one day. I'm surprised I didn't get shot myself, it's a terrible neighborhood

Other than that, it was still pretty brutal. Working outside in 95 degree heat swinging hammers for 2 weeks really wears you out

My personal favorite organization is Relay For Life, which somepony mentioned above. I lost a family member to cancer, and I've always wanted to help out cancer-fighting, so I love the goal, but what I especially love is the sheer unbridled creativity that goes into what they do. It's not so much if you're going to raise money, but how are you going to raise it. Someday I plan to have my own team and help raise money and do stuff. Every chance I get, I donate to anything broadly labeled "cancer".

Other than that, I do a lot of stuff with a church that I used to believe in (NOT INTENDED TO BE RELIGIOUS IN PURPOSE). It's a lot of community things, helping people move in, cleaning up the yards of the elderly. It's simple, but it's good, and a great way to give back.

I'm either old (I'm 21) or things have changed a lot since I was in school. Well first what grade are y'all in having to do volunteer work for school? Not that its a bad thing, just something I never heard of :P

I'm a junior going on senior in high school

My school likes to pride itself on forming young men that will be charitable and contributive to society, so naturally they endorse the ridiculous amount of service hours they assign to us

Well thats good. Least in a way it keeps people out of trouble if they have to volunteer for things. Some will enjoy it, others won't.

True, true

And I was one of them that didn't enjoy it... I'm not built for manual labor. That's why I'm going to college c:

I volunteered to help cook the food for everypony at a family fun park known as Magic Valley where I used to live at. The day I was cooking on I had to serve over 110 ponies many times. It was about an 8 hour event of nonstop cooking.

Great thing I am an amazing chef! Everypony there had a great time, had full tummys, and no one got food poisoning! :D

Best thing about it other than the happy faces from everypony? I got to eat as much as I wanted as well. For free.

I worked part time for a nonprofit company. I was in charge for organising the daily procedures of my department.

We produced and renew old, donated toys for families with little to no income.

This lasted for a year. I had to quit.

I volunteer at a retirement center. These days, I usually can't because of work and school, but there was about 8 months or so when I was there twice a week, usually 3-5 hours each. I was mainly in activities, so I'd help with bingo games, or deal cards and stuff like that. I'd also server food and drinks during happy hour, sometimes run a fitness class on Saturday mornings, organize the library, or do whatever else needed to be done. It was really fun, but like I said, I just don't have the time to spare any more :(

I haven't volunteered for "real" stuff, like cleaning up the town or working at a retirement house, but I've volunteered for a couple of things at my school. The first one is making a day to "welcome" the new students that come to our school next fall. For me, this means that I have to make a short film with a couple of people to explain the theme of the welcoming day. This sort of thing is common for high schools here, but our school has a habit of taking it a step further: we start planning for it in the spring before the summer vacation, while others begin after it ^_^.

The second one is tutoring the new students that come to our school. This means that another person and I have a "tutor-group", which is a group of new students that we have to take care of. In practise it means that we have to teach them about how our school works, and try to answer any questions they have :). Also, we have to try to make everyone feel welcomed and not to feel alone. This is not fully volunteering since doing it grants us one completed course, but since I have all the courses I need (and WAY more :P), it's basically volunteering for me.

  • 4 months later...

Not long ago I was on the My Little Brony part of Memebase and there was a meme that came up challenging bronies to essentially 'nut up or shut up' when it comes to actually making a difference in the world. So I got to thinking just now, do any of you do or at least support charitable works?

Myself, I do fund raising for a charity my friend runs which supports an orphanage in Zimbabwae providing money for the rent, books, and tools.

My last event fundraising for them was a bike ride from my home town to Brighton, which was a near 400 mile journey and took 6 days of hard riding between 4 of us we raised nearly £1000.

I'm also a member of Greenpeace UK branch. I'm not one of those that asks for money, I'm one of those that does the various actions and sometimes gets arrested.

Don't worry I'm not going to brow beat you if you don't do anything nor will I try to convince you that you should. I'm just curious to see who else does stuff like this.

If I wasn't working 7 days a week right now, I'd be at the Humane Society on weekends. I have volunteered at homeless shelters in the past, but humans are so ungrateful. Dogs are always happy to see me.

Huh. Perfect timing for this thread.

I'm considering (and may actually go) going on a mission trip with my church. We would be going to Costa Rica with highschool juniors and other seniors. We would be making two additions to a school and an aqueduct in what the email describes as "not comfortable living. We will be sleeping on the ground, eating beans and rice for almost every meal, and bathing in the river. We will learn the essence of the simple life with only the basic necessities."

I feel like I need to go... We'll see. ;)

I volunteered my bodily fluids and skills for a blood drive recently. I would have given blood but I wasn't the right height and weight requirements...

You made me remember: for my next birthday, I actually want to give blood. ;)

Wow... This makes me sound like there is a new chapter in my life approaching... maybe there is...
