Every background pony ever created. Characters like Lyra and Octavia are ridiculously popular. I don't have a problem with it, I just don't really understand how.

I really can't see how this is the case by any stretch.  Rarity is always near the bottom of popularity polls, and I've seen only *one* piece of Rarity merchandise outside of the toys, compared to god knows how many for Fluttershy, Dash, and Twilight.

Rarity at the bottom? Not really... The majority of the time when I see things like "Who's your least favorite mane six?" Almost everyone says Fluttershy.

Rainbow Dash has a lot of episodes, but I don't see how she can be over-hyped because it's impossible to have too much Rainbow Dash *sunglasses*

With Fluttershy, she's a fan favorite but not necessarily given too much attention in the show. The thing about Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy is that they have personalities that lie in extreme directions, therefore they have more room to grow as characters (i.e. Rainbow Dash becoming more humble and expressive of her emotions, Fluttershy learning to stick up for herself and take risks). The same can be said about Twilight, who started out as high-functioning sociopath and evolved into a well-adjusted leader of ponies and a good friend.

That being said, what growth can we see from Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Applejack? Pinkie Pie could become less impulsive and take more things seriously, but I don't think she has any blaring weaknesses - at least not when you consider that Equestria can't have enough fun and laughter. Rarity has had a few episodes where she learns to loosen up and compromise her obsession with cleanliness to be a more amiable pony, so I'd say she's already gone through quite a bit of character development. The problem with Applejack is that she's already a good, hard-working, responsible friend. The only thing she suffers from is the occasional bout of hypocrisy (e.g. She tells the CMC's that they should have come to her about Babs from the beginning only to bite off more than she can chew with Spike after saving his life and handling the Apple family reunion). Quite honestly, she can't really grow much as a character because she's already very mature.

I absolutely love Rainbow Dash, but not because she is "so awesome" or "cool." I love her voice, her design, her character, and how freaking adorable she is. Way too many people I know only like her because she is the "cool" pony. (This is the reasoning the Dashie fans in my school give anyways.)

I like Fluttershy, but not as much. She's cute too, and I can relate to her more than Rainbow Dash. In my school I have to listen to rants about why Fluttershy is best pony like every single time I'm asked who is my favorite and I say anything besides her. Also it doesn't help that there's this brony I go to school with who overanalyzes the living hell out of the show, so he points out character flaws of my favorite, and comes up with all of these reasons why Fluttershy is best pony. I love Fluttershy, I do. She's so damn cute. However, she is a tad overrated.

I'd say that in my school (we have a decent amount of bronies) the favorite pony is Applejack. I live in a small town of 6000 or so, and we have a huge apple orchard. We also have a lot of farms. This may explain why she is so popular here. Applejack is the most popular here, but only by a few people. Fluttershy, and Rainbow Dash come very close at second and third place.

Rarity is of average popularity where I live. People say she's a well written character, but she's nobodies favorite.

Pinkie Pie has a few people who consider her their favorite. I think she has 2 people where I live who consider her their favorite pony.

Finally, nobody likes Twilight in my town. She's always everybody's least favorite. I always have to defend her, since she is my favorite. Everybody  here is always commenting on how she shouldn't be the element of magic (friendship) since "She sucks at friendship." People also comment on how " horrendously awkward" she is, and are always coming up with some reason as to why she supposedly sucks. One girl I go to school with called Twilight a "Stupid C***" on Facebook. dry.png

So in the end I suppose Rainbow Dash gets the most attention. If you look at the general My Little Pony merchandise, especially in places like Spencers and Hot Topic, she has the most merchandise. It seems like Fluttershy gets more attention on the internet though. I'm not really sure though as this is pretty much the only Pony related site I ever actually visit. I actually read somewhere on some guys blog that Twilight is by far the most popular pony, due to internet search studies and such. Interesting...

should have both characters separated.

TBH I find RD is over hyped a LOT. She's cool and all, but damn...

Fluttershy... not so much, She's got a small cult following tmk, but I don't think its all that big aside from the meme's that have come from her little squeaks and "yay".

All of the characters in the mane six are well rounded and have decent personalities. Often borderlining on being strict stereotypes of whatever they represent personality wise (not element wise)

RD def takes the bill as the "Popular cool kid that everyone looks up too" role, and it may be why she's gotten so much attention.

Meanwhile, Fluttershy is that cute quiet girl that no ones entirely sure what to make of most of the time....

I live in a small town of 6000 or so

If thats "Small" whats my town rate as? Between us and the neighboring town we have roughly maybe 300 people (and dropping now that most of the kids are moving away, and old people dieing. So for every family of 5 gone we're gaining maybe 1 or 2 individuals..) ... Not counting the farm critters of course. Though that could boost

the numbers....

Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy are great ponies and all, but yeah, they are a bit overrated. I can see why, because RD is pretty awesome and Fluttershy is sooo adorable(and really, she is!), but I do think they get a little too much attention, sometimes. ^_^

The fact that I'm inclined to answer "no" for Rainbow Dash and "yes" for Fluttershy despite them both being very popular suggests that I might be looking at the matter with bias. wink.png Therefore, I say they don't get too much attention; people still talk about the others plenty.

I suppose for both RD and definitely FS, though it's more the fandom's fault than the show, considering there's a ton more to their characters than "OMG AWESOME!" and "SOOO KYOOT!"

And even then, they're still no where near as bad as the likes of Luna, Derpy, Trixie, and just about any BG character.

And as far as the RD merch goes, to me it makes a lot of since that she(and Pinkie) get a lot of merch, they seem to appeal most to not only the brony demo, but the target demo as well, which is the one Hasbro is aiming for.

Also am I the only one who doesn't think AJ is as cripplingly underrated as everyone and their mother's say? Personally Rarity is the only character who is truely underrated

I personally don't think any of the mane 6 are "overrated" they get overshadowed by background ponies at times, The Last Roundup anyone? If you want to talk overrated ponies then look no furthier than this the most overrated pony ever.

Dash and Fluttershy are both overrated in my opinion. Then again most ponies are like that.

Fluttershy in particular because of her appearance and nature. Most fans can easily relate to her and this make a connection with her. Not to say that none of the other ponies can be related to but Fluttershy tend to take the majority.

Now hold on a sec just one moment folks. People often mistakenly associate the terms overrated/overhyped as meaning someone or something is somehow otherwise average or mediocre. This is not the case in many cases at all.

Take for example the classic films Titanic and the original Star Wars trilogy (not that Jar Jar Binks and Hayden Christensen crap). A lot of fans will often note that these films are notably overrated, often due to their renown, characters a la Leonardo DiCaprio and Harrison Ford (who by the way still played a surprisingly badass Indiana Jones in the Crystal Skulls). And we can point out notable examples how this is justified like poor or inconsistent writing at times, cheesy lines, and questionable characters like Ewoks.

What this does NOT mean is that they are somehow lesser than what they have proven their merit as to critics, experts, fans and the general public alike, barring those shiny Oscars. People will still remember Titanic for its beautiful soundtrack and classic romance, as cheesy to some as it may seem and its ability to draw out our emotions. Star Wars will be remembered for its notable graphics, exceptional acting and script and soundtrack.

Its the same thing for the pony characters. Just because some folks like me find a character like Rainbow Dash's development and overall design to be hyped up to more than it may merit, doesn't mean she still isn't a great character on her own rights. The same goes for Fluttershy too, who despite excellent character development admittedly at time gets too much attention and redundancy that leads to predictable situations. Even with my favorite Mane 6, Applejack I know well she has a lot of flaws and poor writing that could be better executed and refined.

As for background characters though, well that's a different story altogether. ph34r.png

Overrated simply means that someone or something is being given more credit than its due, relative to the viewer. Of course that's subjective to the viewers, but anyone or anything that's perceived as "too perfect" to have any meaningful flaws in the eyes of its fans and critics is most certainly 100%^to the infinite power overrated.

I lean toward yes on this one. Personally I think Dashie deserves every bit of praise she gets, so I'm not bothered by all the attention, but sometimes the hype about her distracts people from what's really cool about her character.

Fluttershy gets too much credit for being cute. I'd rather talk about her personality, reforming Discord and other things that she's accomplished.

By "Over-hyped" you mean the show has portrayed Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy the most the answer is no, but is Rainbow and Fluttershy over-hyped by the fans the answer is yes. Most of "Friendship is magic" revolves around Twilight Sparkle, and her lessons and development, furthermore her relationship with her friends, which I believe get equal screen time, Applejack, Pinkie Pie and Rarity get many key episodes that some bronies forget or skip over, in addition each episode begins and ends with Twilight Sparkle, who also has the most lines and on screen time in the show, because she is the heart of the series. No, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy are not over-hyped, they are however essential to the story in the same way the mane six are all, you just have to remember and reflect to see what critical role each character plays, so the "Friendship is Magic" has more or less balance among the mane six, just watch and absorb the precious effort the writers have given us.

I think Rainbow and Flutters are a bit overrated. I like Flutters most because I think the most character development has been done with her than anypony else that isn't Twilight. I just also don't like Rainbow's character as much but that's just me.
