Last.fm, word of mouth, or from wikipedia. Yeah those lists of bands in a certain genre work quite nicely. This forum is quite nice, but if I want to find a clump of bands to check out, it's internet searching time.

My brother has given me a lot of songs and bands to listen to. Very rarely do I genuinely not like what he shows me. Other than that, YouTube, and occasionally Pandora. My friends are into bands like One Direction. :(

I used to find new music through albums in stores, i had a massive increase of music when i worked at CEX (they buy and sell used electronics, dvds, games, music etc) but these days i find my music on youtube, just through the suggestions on music videos for songs i like.

I usually listen to music on Youtube while I'm going around making posts here in these forums. I just keep surfing youtube until I find music from a video that really just pumps me up.

I discovered Dragonforce through Guitar Hero, and it was the first metal song I had ever heard, other than Metallica. (I was really sheltered.) (Also, I never really listened to music before then)

I fell in love instantly, looked it up on YouTube, and listened to all the other Dragonforce songs. Through the comments and related videos, I discovered Rhapsody of Fire, Spellblast, Ensiferum, Elvenking, Wintersun, Apocalyptica, Van Canto, Falkenbach, Tyr, and all the other metal I listen to. I also looked through a bunch of Nuclear Blast's artists and Metal Archives to find stuff I liked.

I have 3 methods.

The various music threads in the forums I visit.

Related Youtube videos

Lastly, a friend of mine a.k.a. the human scrobbler plays guitar as a hobby. To the point where he builds his own guitars and is simply obsessed with music. He usually recommends bands and sends Youtube links.

I am subscribed to my favourite DJ's, and keep up to date with all their sites and whatnot for upcoming events, releases, and all of that nonsense. In order to find new artists (because the same ones MUST get boring after a while, right?), I simply go onto the artists that I do know's soundcloud profiles, and view who they're following, and who's following them. Usually people with similar tastes follow each other, so it's a good way to find new artists.

Youtube and Pandora.

I like to keep up with many musicians, labels and promoters on their Youtube channels, like Monstercat Media, DJ Cotts, Liquicity, etc. I also search through random obscure songs I find in the back alley part of Youtube, just looking for awesome musicians. Youtube is a wonderous thing.

And as for Pandora, it is very useful for finding musicians that are very similar to what musicians radio I'm listening to. I've found a few bands I've never heard of, but now absolutely love, on Pandora.

  • 2 months later...

Expanding on my previous post, I've found new sources of music. /mu/ is a great resource, but they are very... judging. Plus, sites like last.fm always have good recommendations for the artists you listen to, instead a blind shot that may or may not work out.

I play videogames.

90% of the music i listen to is from a videogame. If is not from a game of what people write in the webs. Not a particular place just open to possible awesome stuff.

And so in the spirit of this topic liste to

My mother has passed on most of her brilliant music taste to me, and in the rare event that I like anything that isn't at least twenty years old, it's probably due to video games or YouTube. Fallout got me into the crooners.

Mostly from recommendations from friends, on the Internet or IRL. I also find things through related links on YouTube, and following internal links on Wikipedia pages.

Nowadays I find new music from Spotify, the metal thread, and /mu/ sometimes. Spotify shows similar bands to whatever you're listening to, so if you're looking for the something new of the same genre, that's always good. The metal thread recommends metal, 'nuff said. /mu/ has some pretty good stuff, but the people on there are pretty harsh to things they disapprove of. And they disapprove of alot.

My IRL friends all listen to crappy rap and hip-hop or bands that I showed them so they aren't very reliable. Some of my internet buds recommend good stuff though.

A good friend of mine always directs me to music, which is good, because me and him have like the same tastes, I also like to google artists I already like, find songs from 'em, boom like 10 more songs right there. Youtube suggests good stuff, too, due to it being modified to my liking (except it recommends Skrillexfrom time to time, no Youtube, just no) I also like those channels that promotes other people's works, like Monstercat media, but also those hipster channels that like no one ever hears of so I can stay mainstream ;D

And y'know other stuff like seeing what collabs. have been done with people I like, etc.

And a good ol' genre search and dig deep.
