This is awesome, I should be able to preorder it next week. So excited for the audio commentaries, should be fun. The only DVDs I've bought this year were Shout Factory's MLP ones, and this and the Crystal Empire one will be no exception! :D

@,

I'm pre-ordering my copy as soon as I get paid in a few weeks!

I'm also thinking of buying a few copies to give to some people I know... maybe convert them into bronies, who knows. ^_^

I will only buy it if they put in LOTS of extras. I have the first season, uncensored, with intact Derpy, and no Hub watermarks or pop-ups. I burned it to a single DVD that is playable on my stand alone DVD player and looks great on the TV. If there aren't enough extras, I wouldn't need to purchase it...Sorry!

I'd probably buy the second season though. When my friend got me the second season episodes, her encoding did something that prevents my DVD player from recognizing the MP4 files as valid videos. They play great on my computer though! Same thing...No Hub pop-ups or watermarks! I think they'll play when we get a Blu-Ray player though.

When will other countries get it? I live in Ireland, so I'd guess I'd have to wait either six months or a year till I can buy it?

The DVDs should draw in even more fans than we already have.

This would be a good thing for me, but I have Netflix. Don't need to pay an extra 25$ for it when I can watch them and a ton of other stuff for 8 dollars. The commentaries might be the only real good thing about this. And even then for me its not that big of a deal. *shrugs*

While I appreciate the gesture, I don't doubt that this is only the beginning of Hasbro milking their sales for Bronies. The "BUY THIS AND MAYBE!" mentality does NOT work for me. NO. I will NOT be buying this set: I will be waiting for the inevitable Season 1 & 2 Bluray release that they will put out 6 months from now to piss off all the people who bought THIS set. Because that's what Hasbroken does :D

Damn it, I don't know what to do now. On the one hand I'm already collecting the Australian releases and want to finish the boxset, but on the other hand this set is nicely priced and has audio commentaries. Should I buy both? Should I wait to see if there's a release on blu? I just don't know.

Buy ALL the discs!!!! :D

...then just sell the ones you don't need on eBay.

For what it's worth, I collected Pokemon on Australian DVDs once. They're pretty cool, but the Australian sets sometimes get edited in some way or another. I ended up selling mine on eBay, though it was to somebody who didn't know what "Region 4" meant.... http://mlpforums.com/public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png

Do you have evidence that Hasbro has such a history?

...Seriously, I want to know if they're going to punish me for buying stuff early. :P

And then you can thank all of us who did buy this release very politely, because if this set didn't get bought by so many of us, you wouldn't even see a Bluray version in the first place. :D Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.

I snapped this up the minute I saw it. I don't need Netflix, I don't care about Blu-Ray (half my movies are on VHS) and Youtube episodes have issues with picture lag and breakup. So throw in the extras and this DVD version is perfect for me.

Wow, now I'm even more excited about this release knowing it will have audio commentaries. I love hearing about the development history and process of episodes, and the amusing stories behind them. Great stuff.

It's taken me a long time to think up a response to this but it took me watching the Royal Wedding DVD to do it.

I've bought EVERY DVD release to date. And they have SUCKED. Their quality has been absolutely inferior (at least video wise.) Colors in both the Friendship Express DVDs and the Royal Wedding DVDs have been washed out to the point of being eyesores (honestly. Do a side-by-side comparison to original TV video.I get better video off my Droid 4.) and compression in places was iffy. Shout Factory is a HORRIBLE company for Hasbro to be releasing ponies through, and if they are using them again for this season release, expect more of the same. I REFUSE to support a company (in THIS arena. Dear GOD how many thousands have I given them for toys?) that releases inferior product when they OWN the master video and audio tracks. There is no excuse for it, and there is no excuse for them to not release a high definition blu-ray copy when BLURAY is now the standard format for release.

If Hasbro wants to be retarded and release horrible quality products, you go right ahead. Waste your money on it. I refuse. I'll be right over here with high quality MKV files and a bluray burner, enjoying my own HD copies of the episodes until Hasbro gets it's head out of its rear and releases something worth buying in the video arena. :D

Normally, they do both. I don't own a Bluray or an HD TV and I don't know anybody who does. DVD as always be fine to me since I got used to VHS at a young age. Anyway, how many years has Bluray gotten out? Two, three years? That's not enough to completely replace DVD.

This being on Amazon makes me a happy pony. While shipping prices and certain prices of products can be a bit annoying, buying stuff is really easy. Way better than Paypal, especially when Paypal is holding my account hostage. I am going to attempt to get this soon, then look forward to the release of season 2! Zabing!

I usually don't buy DVDs since I usually watch just what's on TV, but I'll probably actually buy this one. I'm getting tired of watching ponies on YouTube, and would want to just watch it on TV instead. Might use Christmas money I get from family to buy it.

Just because you and yours haven't taken the time and/or money to upgrade to HD doesn't mean that the rest of the world hasn't, and that the new standard isn't Bluray. The only reason Dvd is offered at this point is for people that still haven't upgraded, and as a convenience for those of us with Dvd systems in our mini-vans, or a room that has no bluray yet.

Do stores use HD displays and bluray to show off the latest releases? When a disk talks about upcoming releases does it say "Coming soon to Dvd and Bluray", or does it say, "coming soon to Bluray and Dvd"? So yes. Bluray is the new standard format.

The newest and biggest (and even the not so big) movies always hit bluray. To me, what Hasbro is saying by not doing an HD release is that they think it won't sell well, and that it isn't worth an HD release since they still think they are obviously only selling to children. Their loss at this point...

Well, the corollary of that is "just because you and yours have upgraded to BluRay doesn't make it the new standard." And seriously, which format is mentioned first doesn't necessarily imply which one is standard. I would put BluRay first just because "BluRay and dvd" sounds better than "dvd and BluRay" when you say the phrases. If you want to convince us that BluRay is the new standard, you would need to put some kind of reference for evidence.

As for your earlier response, I will retract my statement about you "being part of the problem", since you obviously have spent money on legitimate DVD releases (not to mention merchandise), something that wasn't made clear in the post of yours I quoted. If you found the DVDs you bought to be poor quality, then I think you're quite justified in not spending more money on them until you are sure you're getting something you'd find worthwhile for your money. "Once bitten, twice shy" is the phrase that came to mind.

Still, my other point remains. If I have to step up and purchase the current Season 1 release in the hopes of getting a BluRay version, then that's what I'll do. Indeed, it may be that you and others who bought the previous DVDs led to the release of Season 1, so I'll thank you very politely for that. ;) Even so, you're just proving my point for me.

The issue is less what can I get for my money and more about just financially supporting the company that produced the show we all love, and hopefully inspiring them to take us seriously as a potential market (Let's face it, they'd be stupid not to recognize the potential sales from bronies.) Basically, right now we're planting the seeds and hoping for a harvest. And sometimes that involves dealing with manure.

So I just got the season one dvd today from amazon and I was wondering if anyone else had gotten it and what their thoughts were.

I thought it was a little lacking for a season one dvd. It has commentaries for only the first two episodes and I'm a little sad Lauren Faust wasn't part of it. Instead of learning about the initial creation of the show, we get the voice actor of spike...

Also I thought for a cultural phenomena, their could have been a making of feature documenting the behind the scenes.

Have you watched it through yet? Can you tell me how the quality of the video is? Is the color NORMAL? Which is to say, the color balance is the same as if you were to watch it on the hub channel, or on a high res MKV video file? The two DVDs Shout Factory released before, the color balance was WAY off, and it seemed as if the color was drained right out of it, regardless of what display I watched it on, whether it was my Asus gaming laptop, my 42 inch Sharp Aquos, or my 32 inch Sharp Aquos, or my parent's 32 inch LG. Also, the first DVD had serious audio sync issues in the Friendship is Magic Ep 1.

Were any of these issues present in this DVD or were they fixed? What aspect ratio is it in? Full screen or wide, as is the original HD presentation? I don't want to purchase this set if they can't even get basic presentation right. I was very disappointed with the shoddy quality of the initial dvd presentations. I mean, it's not like they're not given the master video and audio tracks, how HARD is it to just THROW them on a DVD and GO? Jesus, I can do that at home better than Shout Factory has done. And on a Bluray no less...Sheesh. *Smh*

BUT I like to support my franchise...if they've gotten their act straight. Can you shed some light for me? :)
