technology Support the construction of a space elevator!

That sounds incredible! What kind of materials are you guys gonna use to create the orbital lift? Last (fictional) orbital lift I remember most was the Chiron Lift from Airforce Delta Strike, a game I play a lot awhile ago when I was young. Brings back memories. Either way, I can't wait to see your progress on a lift design!

Im actually deathly afraid of elevators. No joke I ALWAYS take the stairs. Maybe you guys can make space stairs? Lol but srsly what if this thing crashed down onto the earth. Considering the base would have to be a few miles and it would be over 70 miles high it would very well destroy alot of stuff. That one meteorite was only 6 miles and it had some massive effect that I cant remember. I would be WAY to terrified to even look at it. The weird thing is im not the slightest bit afraid of heights... Anyway what about if there is a fire? Or someone attacks it? It just sounds a bit... Risky to me. Also with the global economy in the state its in now is it really a responsible thing to spend this much money on an elevator? Sorry if im being a negative nelly...

I'm sorry but i can not/will not put money into this. As cool as it sounds, I think it would be a waste of money and time. I don't think it looks like, also you;ll have to deal with 'spaceman sickness' (it can cause death because floating sick your brain freaks out and stops working.) So i say good luck to you!

Being an investor in the future, I will make a more definitive response than my previous one. I am currently trying to secure a stable financial position. Once I have that situation handled, I will be willing to pledge 100 dollars to the furthering of the human race.

Shame the Kickstarter ends in a few hours. If it could wait for this weekend I could give so much more with my birthday money, but I guess I'll just waste that on Video Games instead of a cool Space Elevator! :P

I did drop $10 in there.

Kickstarter has certainly been sucking me dry for money ever since the Fangamer Kickstarter went up (and I'm getting Ness and Lucas T-Shirts!)

Anyway I hope to see more from this project! :)

From what I understand of space elevators, this knowledge being gained from several articles and an episode of SourceFed, a great use for a space elevator would be to send things (people/componants/resources) into space without spending a fortune on rockets. I think it's a great idea to build one.

There was a planned response I had to this Kickstarter and subsequent discussion that begged to burst forth through my skull, but all that comes now are tears. I-I can't do it, man. I just can't.

About 77 years since mankind had reasonable expectations of entering space. Nearly 56 since the beginning of The Space Race. The first man in space was 1961. First man on the moon was 1969 and we landed five more times after that in less than four years. The Almaz. Mir. Skylab. The ISS and now Tiangong. Enough missions to Mars to list without being yelled at for post size.

The greatest minds and most eager hands. The deepest pockets and most avaricious of hearts. Pure, distilled human drive.

All done in by a bunch of kids with a fundraiser, Wikipedia and no concept of risk-versus-reward.

I have no idea what you're trying to say with this post...

Anyway...I have thought about it more, and I don't have an estimate this time but it will cost a lot of money.

First of all, you have to have money for the research, since they are still in the research stage.

Then you have to pay for the robots.

Then you have to pay NASA to go to the moon. Rockets ships aren't cheap these days.

Then you have to pay for miles of Kevlar to build the moon elevator.

Then you have to pay for the space station on the moon for the workers.

No workers? You'll have to pay for the robots then.

Then you have to pay for multiple trips back and forth to the moon to replace the workers so they don't get spacesick, and or maintenance the robots. Assuming the robots even work like they are supposed to in the first place.

So finally you've built the Moon elevator. Now it's time for Earth.

You have to build a gigantic spacestation at the top. That's expensive.

You have to buy over 80 miles worth of an experimental alloy.

You have to figure out how to compensate for wind.

You have to have a crew on the ship hosting the cable active 24/7 in case of space debris. Good luck outrunning 25000 mile an hour space rocks with a boat.

You have to develop a technology that will propel an elevator 80 miles (I suggest using the vacuum of space and gravity.)

If after all of this you succeed...you better not sell out to the government.

I am pro this but I see some flaws with a 70mile tower. For one you will have fanatics who will do what ever they can to justify that this is horrible. No thought security would have to be huge. And I'm talking a military base around the tower due to all the terrorism that the world has to with stand. And don't forget all the pro humanity and animal groups saying things like why don't we try to save "insert something, like Africa or the pandas" but you get my point with those groups.

On to the pros humanity defiantly needs to get off this rock and find new place to not only live, but acquire resources. Even though it may not happen for hundreds of years eventually there is not going to be enough left on Earth to support all humanity and its creatures. One other thing I can find a positive to is if something from gundam 00 was created a ring that has solar lens so that earth has an unlimited amount of energy. Which could happen if a tower were to be made

He one thing though that has me seating towards not possible is the material to make this tower. If anything all this money that would be spent on making the tower should be put to something else like better space engines and maybe finding a way to go either slip, hyper space. I know that's very tough and very unlikely but if this technology can be created the elevator wouldn't really have a purpose or it can be created and ships can be made in space.

Either way I'm all pro with all the negative feedback. I'll defiantly keep an ear out about more on this topic and can't wait to see what the future has in title for us.

I love how all these people in here are saying "it won't work because of X and Y" and "there's still this problem to work out" as if the people designing it are a bunch of highschool kids.

Do you really think that nobody thought of all this?

Also, to whoever said you have to pay NASA tons of money to go to the moon... Private space travel has been around for awhile, and it's a lot cheaper than going through the government.

But seriously, if this actually happens, I will be so pissed if it ends up in government hands >_<

A Space Elevator.

Humph.

That'll take more than 10 years to make.

Tops.

Pshhh.

Good luck with that.

Space junk will just keep crashing into it all the time.

I read some more and my opinion is changed. But I still think it will cost more than 800 mil. That's multiple trips to the moon, paying for robots, workers wages, 80 miles of kevlar, 80 miles of stuff more expensive than kevlar, a boat, and other stuff I couldn't think of.

800 million is much more than it sounds like. Thats almost 1 billion dollars. In the long run, thats cheaper than if the government was handling it.

I don't know, a trip to the moon is 100 million according to Google. Carbon nanotubes are still in the experimental stage too, so I can't get an estimate on that. Then you have to build two giant spacestations. The ISS cost 35 billion. A minimum astronaut's salary is about 100,000 dollars per year, and if you don't have workers on the moon, you're gonna need to hire astronauts to maintenance the robots. The robots may actually end up being more expensive than the astronaunts.

Well a space station would have to be put on the moon, which would cost much less than the ISS given you can litterally fly the station onto the surface, no construction required. And it is possible to get private modules on the ISS now given SpaceX was just recently the first corporation on the ISS. So nothing 'new' needs to e constructed, just added.

All those astronauts/ robots fit right in the capsule that is being flown up, and they can be out there for 6 months at a time (robots infinitely)

Already this should be looking cheaper than it really is

So if this takes 10 years to build, that's already 2 billion dollars for going to the moon alone if astronauts build this thing. If I can't run Microsoft Windows for more than a few months without running into issues why would robots fare any better? And the ISS is not going to be used as the counterweight for either elevator, unless you want to buy it from NASA, which will probably charge over 35 billion for it, or ask for some rights to the project. Basically you're gonna need 2 counterweights (spacestations) which will cost as much as the ISS if not more since they'd have to be bigger.

I dont understand where this second space station is coming from. And this only costs 1 billion dollars as the cite stated. Im sorry, Im just getting rather confused here.

Here is some info on the space robots that are ALREADY in use:

http://www.nasa.gov/topics/technology/features/robonaut.html

This post is a year old, but it is in use now. You used to be able to pilot the robot from your computer, it was pretty cool. There was an obnoxiously long waiting list though

So wait, you're saying you're with a group of engineers and scientists to make an elevator to space in order to make space travel cheaper and rockets obsolete?

I wish you luck with this project, but I just don't think it is possible.

-Too expensive. The moon is a little less than 250 THOUSAND miles away. Imagine the price of all that metal. Plus it would require a lot of electricity to power an elevator traveling that far. Government wouldn't fund it unless there was NO doubt that it would work.

-Building it would take too long. It would require use of rockets to transport pieces and workers from elevator to Earth. (Using a lot of fuel and $$$)

-The moon and Earth aren't perfectly lined up for an elevator.

-Space junk would constantly hit it.

-Probably a lot more reasons I can't think of.

This is just my opinion. Who knows, you can continue with this project and prove me wrong, but until then, I'm not convinced that this is possible.

Well, I didn't. But just because someone else already brought up these concerns doesn't mean these concerns don't exist, right?

No, we explained why these concerns are moot, and as feld0s new website provides, we shed some light on to how this procces would occur

You misunderstand me, by "already been addressed" I meant that they've been brought up an answered, because that's what it means to address a concern.

As Ratchet said, it's already been explained that they aren't actual problems. For each problem, there's either a way to get around it, or the problem doesn't exist at all because so many people don't seem to understand that a space elevator is NOT a giant-ass tower.

By the way.

Listen,Feldo.

This CANNOT BE MADE OUT OF METAL IF YOU THINK SO.

You need like 50 air conditioners or even MORE.

The sun will just heat up the metal so much that it will become so hot it'll just melt.

So this "space elevator" you're making will take about let's say more than 50 billion dollars and so much years that you'll be dead about then maybe.

Man cannot make that kind of technology yet.

Even Bill Gates can't do that.

And I BET not even Steven Hawking knows how to do that.

So what are we going to live on a new planet or something once mankind makes it?

I don't trust this.

If this gets knocked into a star by something and it blows up.

YOU all will be responsible for the first black hole in our solar system.

So beware with your SO AMAZING project.

For it may lead to humanity being extinct.
