music Anypony collect vinyl records?

That's exactly what my brother does. Listening to his music on Itunes then going out and buying the albums. Except he does it with Cd's. Except he does have one very rare Carpathian Forest demo cassete, I don't even know how he managed to find a seller.

The black metal band? Dude, that's awesome.

And If you guys/gals ever want to start collecting vinyl, that would be awesome. We could have some brony vinyl group or whatever. Could be fun.

I have a old record player in my brother's room, actually, but I only get it out when some of my friends are over and they think that THIS NEW-FANGLED TECHNOLOGY IS JUST OFF THEIR ROCKERS!!!!!!

I think my favorite vinyl album is The Doors' Morrison Hotel. Not their best album, but it still sounds extremely crisp.

I grew up with vinyl being the only medium available to buy music in. Hell, I remember when CDs first came out-one of the first albums available on CD in England was 'Brothers In Arms' by Dire Straits.

I still love vinyl-although it's probably more of a nostalgic thing for me as opposed to real or perceived superior sound quality.

I like the crackles and pops you get with vinyl-takes me back to being a kid.

Vinyl is alright. It tends to be somewhat better due to the loudness war but a good master is a good master and will sound excellent on almost any medium (except tape due to bit depth and tape just being a terribel medium in the first place). Apparently the all new remastered Pink Floyd albums are terribly mastered whereas one of the first press vinyls will most likely be better provided its in good shape as it's dynamic range isn't compressed nearly as bad.  All I have for vinyl though is some George Carlin, Three of a Perfect Pair and the 45 of A Gloruis Dawn.

Whether its better because its analog, I'm going to say no. The reason for this is because of the Nyquist Theroem. What this states, among other things, is that a digital signal will 100% reproduce a band limited analog signal at half the sampling frequency. In other words, if you send a 20KHz sine wave sampled at 40 KHz through your audio card and then back out to an osciliscope, it will be a perfect reproduction. Now there can be noise added throughout the entire process. Be it jitter, hiss and noise from the band pass filter. However most consumer grade devices are transparent enough for it not to be noticeable unless you have a high end system.

I can neither confirm nor deny myself being the cause of electrical related malfunctions. Anyways, you wouldn't happen to have a jar of replacement magic smoke would you?

Uh, I haven't ever really listened to anything on vinyl in recent memory. I respect whatever medium an artist chooses to use for their works. I won vinyls, but mainly for collection purposes.

I freaking love vinyl! I prefer classic rock and there is no better way to listen to it than on vinyl. I have waaaaay too many records to list but it includes pretty much all of the classics. I'm always on the hunt when I'm out and about, I can never have enough. I have 4 record players in various states of functionality. I wear them out way too quickly.

I've never really listened to records. My mom has a couple of them. Most of them are warped though. That's what I don't like about them. I feel like they get messed up over time. But when they're in good condition, they can be more fun to listen to.

The most recent record I've listened to is an old album by Foreigner.

I was born in the 90's too so yeah I never really got into VInyl. My dad owns a Vinyl player though and does regularly buy Vinyl LP's even now.

I've been personally looking to get one at some point but right now I don't really have the finance to buy one and start up a collection so the odds are i'll wait a little while and probably try again around Christmas.

I love how Vinyl records have massive Artwork on the covers, it just looks awesome to me. (As long as it ain't an Aphex Twin cause his covers are kinda creepy.)

I try to get every single album I can on CD, vinyl, and cassette. I don't support digital downloading, because I like to get something tangible for my money, and besides, the digitalization of the music industry is taking something beautiful out of the entire thing.

Here's a list of some of the LP's I have:

Pearl Jam - Ten (Original 1991 pressing and the 2009 reissue)
Crass - Penis Envy

Eppu Normaali - Aknepop
Nirvana - Nevermind (Original 1991 pressing)
Ramones - Rocket to Russia
Alice in Chains - Facelift
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
The Doors - The Doors
Buzzcocks - Another Music in a Different Kitchen (Possibly of the original 1978 pressing. Not sure)
Soundgarden - Ultramega OK

Ratsia - Ratsia (Original 1979 pressing)

Pearl Jam - VS
ABBA - ABBA
Apulanta - Attack of the A.L. People
N.W.A - N.W.A And the Posse
Terveet Kädet - Rock Laahausta Vastaan
Discharge - Warning: Her Majesty's Government Can Seriously Damage Your Health

  • 2 months later...

A couple weeks ago, I decided to jump into vinyl for my listening pleasure. I also want to start a small collection of my absolute favorite albums on vinyl. I found an old JVC L-FX2 turntable at a pawn shop and I haggled the owner enough that I got a pretty great deal on it. I put a new needle on it and it's a great starter turntable.

Note: I wasn't gonna invest a couple thousand dollars in a turntable if it turned out that I don't really like vinyl all that much. I'd really rather invest $40 in an old turntable and needle than $1,800 in a pro rig for just getting into vinyl.

So I love it. For its price and age, it's an awesome turntable!

This morning, I drove to Oklahoma City to pick up my favorite album on vinyl: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins. This was the only one in the city. And here's a picture of it smile.png

post-6322-0-39367500-1383703656_thumb.jpg

Now here's what concerns me. Look at that price tag! $89.98?!! Yeah after tax, it was one hundred dollars! That's ridiculously expensive. Now given that I love this album so much, I didn't mind paying that kind of money for it. Remember I'm only getting my absolute favorite albums ever on vinyl. But that's still pretty high and it definitely puts a dent in my budget.

I love the sound of vinyl now that I've heard a new vinyl. A CD doesn't even touch the sound of a new vinyl. I just wish they weren't so expensive. Surely if the record companies came down on their prices, they'd sell a lot more vinyls, especially since that's what people are sort of going back to. I also just love the thought of record ownership. I mean, there's just something different about having a record. You can't see the zeros and ones on a CD or in an mp3. But you can look at the grooves on a record. smile.png

Finally I know of one pony who would be so proud of me for this biggrin.png

So what do you guys think of vinyls? Do you use vinyls yourself or are they too expensive for you? Too much work to take care of them? Share your thoughts below

First off, love this topic. Had the same discussion with a guy my dad's age about this and I did some research. I do like the idea of getting vinyl records, especially for the much older music that I like. Wouldn't mind having a Steppenwolf or Black Sabbath vinyl, for instance.

But $100 for a vinyl? Especially a record that isn't in short supply? Heck no. That's straight up price gouging.

When digital music first came out, it was choppy and the quality was terrible. The worst part of digital when it first came out was the actual recording of the music. No one knew how to work it properly, and it sounded like garbage. When that happened, vinyl was easily the better choice to make over digitally recorded.

But now? We know infinitely more about digital recording and producing. The quality is far, FAR better than what vinyl could ever achieve and the customization of a song for digital completely stomps on the recording style of vinyl. I could go on.

In the end, I wouldn't buy vinyl unless is was a rare item or unless it has sentimental value to me that would equal such a tremendous price tag. However, kudos to you for getting one!

Thanks! And yeah, I normally wouldn't pay that much for music. But I repeat, this is my favorite album. I grew up with this album. A lot of music I grew up with came from this album. In most cases, $100 for pretty much anything I buy is pretty steep and it's gonna screw up my budget. But I have SO much sentimental value in this album that I didn't mind it and I know these records will get lots of plays. :)

It's also a hobby I'm picking up. Since there's so much work that needs to go into the care of vinyl to extend its life, it gives me something to do with my spare time too.

They're overrated. They are an older technology and are obsolete. The only real use of them is for collectors and such. As for those who say they "Sound better", they don't. (Well, they do, but only if the album you're putting on digital was originally on vinyl, as audio-quality loss is inevitable in any conversion, but this hardly makes vinyl a "Superior" medium).

I do admit they're cool to have around as a collector, but personally I don't really listen to them, no.

I absolutely love vinyl! I have loved it since I was little. It's so much different then pressing play on your phone. I have a little collection myself, some of them I got because I like them and some because they are valuable. The artwork, the liner notes, the crackles and pops, it's something special.

Soooo jealous of your Smashing Pumpkins album... Very nice acquisition.

For me listening to vinyl is an experience and the sound doesn't really affect me as much (though there is a "different quality" that reminds you it's vinyl). So that is why I enjoy it. Sadly you really need a good environment for the kind of experience I enjoy and I have a tiny apartment.

Thus I enjoy vinyl, but I do not acknowledge its audial superiority.

However, kudos to you for getting that album (wouldn't mind me a Gish album too).

As a side note you should check out silver sun pickups if your the kind of pumpkins fan I am.

Damn you wasted $100 an LP? I mean, I complain about how LPs are $40 or $30. But dang, $89? Hell, I made a big fuss about how I had to pay $15 for a CD. I would start a vinyl collection but they're so expensive. So I decided have a CD collection instead.

Yea so this is my CD collection, not vinyl but oh well...

Anyways, I'm hoping I get enough money this Christmas to at least get a cheap turntable and a few used records. I wanna record collection so bad ;_;

To be fair it is technically more than one LP and the melancholy LP was a pretty limited run (Corgan still likes putting out those limited runs)

I don't even have a turntable so what's the use? Baka. BTW, they should make a computer that reads vinyl, like for reals though. And one that plays cassettes too.

Isn't it like 4 discs on vinyl? Still ain't worth it IMO. It's not like it's a rare first pressing of Bathory's self-titled.

I always thought the only people who still used vinyl records were older people and hipsters trying vainly to be 'unique'. Don't get me wrong, for people who grew on listening to vinyl records, that's cool, but modern recording techniques mean that digital music's quality stomps on even the best vinyl records. Therefore I have no need or interest in getting vinyl records.

I got a record player a few months ago and so far I have around 15 or so records (most of which are from my Dads old collection.)

I mainly got my player because vinyls intrigued me. Just how they worked and sounded and played. Plus I like how 12" and LP's come in large sleeves with massive album art. Plus a lot of artists had exclusive songs on Vinyls and few CD re-releases. Eg. Kraftwerk.

Yeah I guess they're pretty expensive. But really if you use websites like Discogs (if you're buying older records anyway) you can get them fairly cheap (you're looking around £7 w/ shipping for a LP). Newer releases here in the UK cost around £20 which is around double the cost of a normal CD so i suppose if you're after them it could end up being costly.

It's likely to be my player cause it's on the cheap but I wouldn't say that the sound quality is necessarily superior neither.

I'll admit though I'm not too sure why they suddenly became massively popular again. Particularly due to how expensive they are and how people are so tight on dosh these days,

Yeah, but anyways...

I LOVE vinyls! I wasn't born in their era, but I recently, like you, began listening to them. I inherited a very good condition vinyl table from my grandmother after she passed away, ever since, I've loved vinyls more than CD's.

Plus, dat smell is uncomparable.
