Why I feel out of touch with the community/too many idiots in the community?

Disclaimer: When I criticise the 'community' I don't mean the forums, I mean the brony community in general

I've began to notice, that as a veteran member, I've stopped posting or visiting the forums on a regular basis. This is something I've been trying to solve for a while now, because I like the community here, and I want to continue to be a part of that.

After a while, I think I found out the answer.

I joined the fandom about a little way through Season 2 at the start of the year. By then, the community was still fairly new, and really, we weren't that big in numbers. We were big, but nowhere near as big as we are now.

Anyway, as many of the older members may know, after Season 2 ended, there was pretty much a rather large period of boredom, and there weren't that many threads that provoked a lot of discussion in the way that it used to.

It was during that period that I became absent from the forums, and stopped posting, for the sake of waiting for Season 3 to come, and the forum to flood with posts.

Now, this is where I start to get cynical. I watched the first couple of episodes of Season 3, and returned to the forums to begin posting. Now, what I noticed was, that I stopped posting after that, so I wanted to know why. I wanted to continue posting here, as I was a fairly well known member at the time.

After a little while, I started to notice changes in the community (see disclaimer, not the forums, but the brony community) and started to wonder if these changes were what were stopping me coming on the forums.

A lot of the newer members of the brony fandom, are simply annoying. They just are (remember, disclaimer, a lot of new members here are pretty cool) and they are because of the way they talk about the show. For example, some will pretty much talk about it in places that aren't related to MLP, and want a MLP this, and MLP that, which, in my opinion annoys me.

I do remember here, that we would talk about things like 'what if this was MLP related?' but not to the scale that a lot of newer bronies take it to.

I don't actually know if this is what's keeping me from posting here, or it's just the danger of boredom lingering in the back of my mind.

So, what do you guys think? Are you noticing changes like this in the community? Does it affect your picture of the community as a whole? (It doesn't change my opinion at all, really, just the newer ones).

I hope someone reads this, and can hopefully, understand what I mean, and not take it too personally, or offence if you feel I may be targeting you, because really, I'm not.

Thank you all, and have a nice day. :)

You know what they say: The bigger the barrel and the more apples you throw in it the more likely you are to get a few rotten ones.

Even MLP is not immune to the rule that any community that grows larger than a certain point will draw in varied people from around the world. Good people, bad people, awkward people, shameless people, gamers, furries, tentacle porn lovers, whatever!

Mankind is so varied at this point that even in small communities you'll get a good variety of people but as it gets bigger the purity becomes harder to maintain.

I left the forums for this very reason, and because I wasn't feeling it much anymore, but as soon as season 3 started I got my groove back and I also came to terms with everything I just said above.

I see where your coming from, and wholeheartedly agree with everything you said, although personally, I'm finding it difficult to get back into posting here. Hopefully, if I keep trying to make an effort, I can eventually remake a name for myself, and become fairly well known again.

Well I can't really speak on much seeing as I'm still somewhat new in a way.(I've been a brony for like 4-5 months.) but I know what you mean.

The reason I can think of that the community feels like its changed is because eventually your going to get so many people in this community to the point where not everyone's going to be perfect. Theres plenty of wonderful people in the community, but theres also a couple bad apples here and there.

I know what you mean about alot of people trying to spread the show any and everywhere, but I think it might be due to a few things, I'm sure in their mind maybe there just very excited about discovering the show and want to spread it everywhere, some just haven't learned about how not everyone is going to appreciate it. I think after they understand this it normally settles them down and they stop spamming it everywhere and anywhere.

I understand that others just don't want to see MLP stuff, but thats why i'm here! :D. I was much to timid (And I still kinda am Timid anyways) To be the type to post MLP everywhere. However I agree that MLP stuff should pretty much remain on MLP related forums. I don't have any problem with it here(I don't even mind people making art that ponifies everything as long as its not spammed everywhere).

I think its pretty normal to feel theres less to discuss because there really is normally when theres not a new episode every week. So I don't blame you for not being around for that :P.

I don't think you should let the few bad apples spoil the bunch(sorry for the cliche line.) Theres still plenty of wonderful people here and I'm sure you can still enjoy the forums and the community.

However if you don't want to involve yourself with the community thats fine with me to, its up to you really.

Anyways the growth of the fandom makes it more likely to find some people who are a bit of a bad group of bronies, but I personally don't think that should overshadow all the other great bronies still left. Again its your choice so do what you want.

I hope you choose to stick around, and that I'll see you around, but again its your call!

Yes I have noticed this alot. Not only is there alot of weird new bronys but the community's members are also getting younger people to join like alot of 13 years olds who doesn't even give a shit about the show but forces themselves to like it cause everypony else does.

I dont really care though

Blargh, gotta love peer pressure. I never was one to do anything because the people around me told me to so I've never had this peer pressure problem (though I have this insatiable need to please everyone around me, friend or foe) but I hate to see it. I've never been one to say everyone had to enjoy MLP cuz it's better than what haters make it out to be but I would think forcing those who don't actually like it to like it is as bad as any hater who tries to convert a brony into a hater.

There are a lot of members of the brony community that I want to tan the hide of.

There are always going to be annoying people wherever you go, that's life.

Block and ignore is my motto.

These forums are actually pretty good though.

'Twitter bronies' frustrate me to no ends.

Huh, I didn't really know this was happening, but I'm pretty out-of-the-loop with everything. It does suck - People should like ponies if they like ponies, not because they feel forced to.

The only negative thing I've noticed is all the people accusing the show of pandering and saying Season 3 is bad. Maybe these newbies are partially to blame for that? Either way, I can see how the fandom has been getting a tiny bit worse lately, but it's still amazing, and if you can overlook all the negative things and remain optimistic, everything will turn out well :)

@@Zygen, I really think you've done well to articulate what really, I shouldn't be thinking. I probably am going to stick around, as I've been a member for so long, so I want to see how this community turns out. Thank you for such a great post.

Oh god, these are the people I despise. Ugh, I'm sick of these people, and I'm sick of my generation, and how ignorant we are. Same with the human race in general. It disgusts me.

Best post I've seen today, as well as words to live by, and you're right, the forums are pretty good, as a lot of those members leave after a week or so.

Yeah, in any place there are going to be a few people that are going to be trying to force MLP onto places that aren't MLP related.  I do have a problem with this.  I have also noticed that more and more people are just becoming fans because they just want attention.  I do think the fandom is sorta losing sight on what really matters.  I mean every group is going to have people in it that try to seek attention, whether it be by forcing it on the internet or forcing it IRL.

We're sorry.  :(

If I may speak for all/many of the newbies, we don't mean to be annoying.  I think that perhaps we are trying too hard to be liked by all of the veterans, which could easily come off as annoying.  All we wish to do is to contribute to the awesome, but in doing so we kind of take it away...

Please forgive us.  We don't mean to push away our elders, in fact, it's like you in which many of us aspire to become.  We don't want you to leave, however if that is what you believe you must do, obviously, we can't stop you.

I notice it just slightly, but it's not really a big deal. Every fandom has morons, every fandom has over-eccentric people, every fandom has the same negative aspects in some form. Don't let it get in your way from what you enjoy. Frankly the only reason it bugs is because you let it.

You know, I had the most saddest moment the other day after watching the last episode. I am not going to name anypony, but when you hear bronies attacking the fandom... at first I was like "did I just hear them bashing My Little Dashie?" and sure enough they continued and confirmed they were. Now, we all know the Dashie story so I won't go into it. But you don't know I'm 36 years old... and I'm single... and those that know me in real life know that I'd love a daughter of my own more then anything in the whole wide world... and you see... i know about love... I'm single because I attracted the girl of my dreams and we really loved each other... and I had to let her go because she was a lesbian... you can laugh if you want to... but when we met I gave her my love... and she left me into the world a much better person and going after her dreams... which last I heard which was over 4 years ago... was teaching little kids in school... but you see... you still don't understand... I lived as a woman for the better part of a year... and it's such a rediculous journey because you have to love yourself enough to be whom you want to be... and sacrifice a job... get disowned by family and friends... get groped by doctors and med students along with being judged just by how they think you'll look... harassed by people... all while living on wealthfare... and if you were ask me what that feels like... it feels like the world isn't very loving... so you sometimes you can't do anything but cry... cause your almost out of the rice you've eaten once a day for a whole month... and in your heart there's just about nothing left... because at that point you cry alone... .because pretty much everyone has said they don't love you at the time you need it the most... so if you think you know anything about tolerance... you don't know anything... because I finally gave up and tried to kill myself... everyone thinks it's selfish but from my point of view at that time I can tell you that the world wouldn't have cared because the people I thought loved me didn't... they all judged me... wanted nothing to do with me... and i was good looking one too... well, i obviously failed... but I still continued on with life and gave up being a girl... and because of the lack of love from the world... I can't help but cry because when you attract the girl of your dreams... and you both know it... and she knows you're story... and why you both can't be together... what would you think about love then... because then we could have adopted the little girl that I always wanted... so you tell me how much My Little Dashie would make you cry... knowing the world denied you the little girl of your dreams... and then hear bronies attacking such heart warming story.... well I don't know about you but all I could think was ".. judgeth not... a pony that loveth their craft...  for that pony understandeth love... " so if you want to know why that is in my scripture... that would be the reason... so you don't have to go through the emotional pain that i have to when you guys do stuff like that.... it hurts.. and i'm trailing off again...

I haven't noticed it in the forums, but it's almost as if some of the people in the fandom think they're entitled to something. What that is? I don't know, but it's almost as if they're using the fandom as a crutch.

Which of it self might not be bad, but some people take it to a whole other level of egotism.

Wait what? So it's cool and mainstream to be a brony now? When did this happen and why was I not informed of such a huge social change!?

I kinda find those extremists bronies to be amusing

Dude, that's fine :) Most of the people on the forums are actually good about this, and you seem like a decent person anyway. I guess we were all like that, trying to be noticed by the older bronies, but I suppose it's how you do it that matters really.

You're right. I'm being overly-cynical, which is something that I suppose is bad for me. I'm not going to leave this forum, that's for sure, and it is true that all fandoms have the assholes who won't stop going on about it.

@, (not gonna quote because post is too long) personally, I found My Little Dashie to be quite sad, and it bothered me for a while, but I suppose it has a different impact for different people.

I go through life hating myself and everyone else around me. For example today, I have the genuine urge to go stab this absolute twat I know, while also having the urge to kill myself, even though I have preached in the past that it's a permanent solution to a temporary problem (in most cases anyway).

If this was in anyway directed towards me, then I'm sorry if I hurt you in any way, and I genuinely feel for you. If you want to talk to me about anything, ever, then feel free. I'm always open. :)

I understand why you feel the way you do but I think you're looking into this way to much. People will be people and if you can't deal with it yes you will leave not just this forum but many others.

If you're a fan of MLP then that's all that matters. Keep watching the show the forum is just a collection place for people to mingle nothing more. If you're bord of this place and/or MLP you know what to do.

Thanks for the kind words. No it wasn't you that hurt me. I was referencing the fact that I saw the fandom attacking the fandom which i was sad not only in and of itself but the reason it hurt me becuase i the MLD was such a good story. Yeah, it's a sad story, but it's emotional value can only be placed by the very ideas about love and relationships you have had or wished to have as you can see by my little emotional release there. If any one would think that it's about letting that get to me no, you're wrong. It's more emotional trigger based upon my memories and knowledge and what I feel inside about something.

Well, i sure do understand the feeling...

I myself am new to the forums, but i have liked the show for quite some time now... Even then, i was quite afraid that someone will just do something stupid and just put us all under a "Bad name".

There's that saying, Quality over Quantity. The thing that doesn't work with that saying here, is that you can't really make someone leave the fandom, or just simply make them join it. And with the increasing popularity of it, more and more people will keep rushing in... It's not really something we can avoid...

I think the main goal for us would be to keep the quality of most of the fandom, Sooner or later, people that might "Annoy" You, will "Grow up" (Not sure if i can use a term like this here), or maybe even leave, or learn to contribute or just flow with the fandom in a more "educated" way...

I will not lie, and no offence to anyone that might find somehow related to what i write here, but i personaly, really don't like being around let's say 11 year olds. You try to talk all nice and they just go all Royal Canterlot on you *Caps lock screaming, shouting*. Ofcourse, this doesn't apply to all of them, but to most it does...

I'm not sure about how the brony fandom really started, i'm guessing people who were around 15-30 started watching it, but not really 11's or 12's... I think. But i have started to see alot of people that fit into that age group, and they really don't look like a really preety gang to hang out... *Again, no offence! Doesn't apply to everyone!*

Another thing, a person shouldn't always be judged at what he posts or doesn't post, sometimes, we all just want to have some fun and joke around...

I for once can't really express myself fully because i know i lack the vocabulary sometimes, and i just don't know how to exrpess myself.

Hope i didn't get off the topic to much... I just flow with what a write most of the time :P

All in all, I don't really like when something gets to big, but i also don't like when something is just to small. There should be a balance... I think the community here will get back on their feet, just give it some time...

Hate to break it to you, but there's idiots in every community, not just the brony fandom. Look for the good people and you'll find them, and ignore those idiots because they are likely the minority who just seem common due to their noticeable actions but really aren't that common.
