I'm not talking about the alicorn thing, but I want the old Twilight back

I miss the old twilight. Not in the sense of being a plain old unicorn (I don't mind that), but more in the sense of personality. When the show started out, she was my favorite character. Now, she isn't even in my top 5. I loved her sarcastic, book addicted personality. Now she seems to have lost it completely.

I know the show is about character development, but couldn't she at least keep a little bit of what made her herself? Couldn't she still be at least a little sarcastic now and then?

Maybe it's just me.

Does anyone else miss that?

Same. I used to love her, as my second favorite at one point, but now she's so dull. She's more geeky then plucky now. And I miss her being plucky, as none of the other mane cast are plucky. And currently, plucky is my second favorite personality.

Lauren Faust stopped working on MLP:FiM at the end of Season 2. And without her the writers think they can do what they please.

Now, i don't mind the "new" Twilight at all. I still find her to be quite entertaining.

What i am most excited about is to see how much the Alicorn part changed her as a character.

Interesting post. Didn't see the whole title at first so I thought this was going to be anti-Alicorn rage. I suppose I can see this. She has gotten a lot more streamlined and straightforward. Could it be because of the princess thing? Not sure, though Tara Strong mentioned that her being an alicorn will not affect the feel of the show, so my assumption is the writers. Then again feel of the show doesn't mean character personality.

Strangely enough, I actually have grown to like Twilight more recently. Strange I know. I am really looking forward to seeing more alicorn Twilight.

I miss it too.   She hasn't been all that interested in books this past season, and that's one of her defining qualities.  I just hope that she comes back this next season, although I doubt it.

Why must the writers hurt us so?

Aside from her having a bit more control over her OCD like tendencies and not freaking out as much she still seems like the same old Twilight to me. You do have a point about her sarcasm going down quite a bit though I think that has to do with her maturation as a character though I wouldn't mind seeing occasional sarcasm from her especially considering how many high class ponies are going to kiss her flank as the new princess.

I feel that she has changed a little but so has every other of the mane 6. She is still my favorite pony, she still is into her books for example: when she became a alicorn she asked "is there a book I can read about being a princess?" So in my humble opinion she has become a little more mature about how she handles thing and carries herself and that's about it.

Some of my favorite episodes were those like lesson zero and feeling pinkie keen where Twilight seems to go off the deep end. I wouldn't mind seeing that Twilight come back....

To be honest, I didn't notice any change. But one thing I saw changein Twilight was her short-temper. She'd usually get stressed, or annoyed easily. But other than that, she's fine. But yeah, we need some more Twilighty-sarcasms! But I don't think she's changed, aside from that.

I mean, season 2 had a lot of epic Twilight moments. Lesson Zero, and It's About Time. So, I think Twilight still has her old personality. In my opinion, she hasn't really changed. Season 3 didn't have enough episodes to include Twilight in it, but I bet season 4 will have some Twilight moments too. I think the show's doing a good job. We'll have to keep an eye on Twilight for season 4. Then we'll see. ;)

You are quite true. I love Twi. :P  I was really worried when I heard about the possible Twilicorn. :o  Check this out, although you may hate it: https://i.chzbgr.com/completestore/12/10/31/Bp4GAKhbIUGmdcY8w5LgYA2.pnghttps://i.chzbgr.com/completestore/12/10/31/Bp4GAKhbIUGmdcY8w5LgYA2.png

Uhm.. Twilight is an alicorn... That's kind of old news. i really don't care about that, as long as they don't ruin the character.

I think it actually adds an interesting twist to the show.

Honestly, I feel the same way. I do kind of miss the old Twilight. Hopefully, she'll turn back into her old self a little bit personality-wise in Season 5. :)

Yeah, Twilight is fading into the background far too much. At the start of Season 2, I liked how "The Return Of Harmony" showed her more general leader side, but I am getting sick of that. While there are flashes of what I love about her here and there ("Is there a book about being an Alicorn?"), Season 1 was definitely her best season. I think a slice of life episode in Season 4 for her would do a whole lot of good.

I really do want the old Twilight back too. The Twilight that we all know and love, not the geeky one. The one that is fun-loving, and not the one that exaggerates over little things. Lesson Zero, i can deal with.

Actually Twilight has been geeky since day one, if anything the "old Twilight" was even geekier but that adorkable quality which is difficult to pull off in a character is undoubtedly a part of her charm. Honestly I think much of the reason why I like Twilight is because she reminds me of Donatello who is my favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja turtle who is yet another excellent example of a lovable adorkable character.

I don't think Twilights changed a whole lot honestly, I think she has developed some, but I think in a way thats natural, it wouldn't make much sense for someone like her to not become more knowledgeable and learn and overall develop anyways.

Shes also had alot less episodes as of late really. I mean she shows in the more adventurous episodes, but she hasn't shown up as much lately.

I guess part of me misses the older her, but I still like her just as much really. Besides I think character development is inevitable in the long run for any good show. So I've kinda adapted to it.

I dunno, I'm hoping for her to get a few more slice of life episodes in S4, just to see some more of her and maybe her character will show a bit more brightly again. When shes not busy worrying or adventuring solving problems stuff like that.

I didn't notice any change in her... then again, I don't focus on such things.

I can't really say anything about her that actually bothers me at all either...

I never actually thought about, but now that you mention it, I have to agree. Twilight's definitely changed in terms of how she behaves and acts. She's missing the awkwardness that made her so endearing in the past. I hate to say it, but Twilight's not quite so adorkable anymore.

I really miss scenes like these:

This is Rika Nonaka from the popular anime Digimon Tamers. Immediately at first glance, you can tell there's something edgy about her character; something that makes her fierce and cold at the same time, not wanting to mingle with the locals or to get along with others. That is because it is what she was to begin with -- cold, distant, and only viewed Digimon as her toys in some sort of game. It was hard to even think that she wouldn't be an eventual antagonist as the series went along, but did she prove everyone wrong.

So as time went on, it was clear that her experiences in having true friends was mellowing her out. She no longer felt cynical and selfish and instead displayed genuine empathy for others. Call it the hallmark of a Digidestined, but it goes beyond so much more than that -- when you've sat back and looked at what others can do for you, you become softer and more open to them.

CHerZJA.jpg

Such is also the case with Twilight -- while her sarcastic and bookish demeanour was a fun thing to grasp on to, it didn't portray Twilight for what she earnestly is: a kind, compassionate, intelligent, and selfless mare. No longer did she need to latch onto her previous habits, as like Rika, the experiences she went through with her friends evolved her into something we're all proud of beholding.

You are awesome for posting that, Alfonzo. Rika's only one of the BEST Digimon characters ever!!! B)

I see a small difference though. I think Rika always had a softer side, it just took a while to bring it out. (Her sense of trust was destroyed when her father left, leading her to keep the world at a distance to protect herself.) Where Rika was wounded and remote, Twilight is more innocent and sheltered. The distance is there for her too, but unlike Rika, she's not conscious of it. The only way she relates to other ponies is functionally--what they can do for her. Spike is her assistant, her friends are the other Elements of Harmony, Celestia is her teacher. I don't mean she's emotionless or uncaring, far from it. But at her core, Twilight Sparkle is a taskmaster, an organizer. In her mind, everything must have a reason and a place. She has bent her own rules on occasion (Pinkie sense) and learned that friendship is tremendously important to accomplishing her goals, but has she learned to appreciate it independently? Not exactly.

The other Mane 6 sense this as well. They are still more likely to hang out with each other than with Twi and it's not a coincidence--at least to me it isn't. They like her but she's not a pony you can just shoot the breeze with, unless it's about something that interests her. ;) Twilight's limits are not necessarily faults; they are the product of inexperience. She's actually far less mature than she thinks she is, and we see that in how she reacts when she loses control of a situation. If all the roles and functions that allow Twilight to make sense of the world were suddenly removed, that pony would be at a loss. She'd be the same old lonely filly all over again, with her muzzle in a book all day waiting for her BBBFF to come home.

Twilight still has a lot of growing up to do. I wanted to see her change as a pony before the writers changed her any other way. Unfortunately we didn't get that, and in answer to the topic I have to say Twi is still the same pony she was all along. She doesn't have as much time to be sarcastic now, which I miss, but basically she hasn't changed much at all. To the contrary--maybe she hasn't changed enough.

I think it's obvious most of us can agree that Twilight has changed in personality since the beginning of the show. To what degree and in which direction is debatable, but that's mostly irrelevant for this discussion. I think the real question is, is whether or not the character change is a good trend or bad, and (partly) whether or not it was necessary.

Most children's shows are horribly bland and repetitive, which is why they work well for children; there's very little (if any) plot to follow, and they get the same thing they expect week after week. No changes, no surprises, they know what they're in for when they tune in. MLP has clearly been doing things a bit differently to be able to attract the older audience it has, and I believe a huge part of that is the character development.

The show is in a bit of uncharted territory; it has to stay a children's show for the most part, but Hasbro and the writers have realized the potential that us bronies bring the franchise, and I wouldn't think they'd want to lose us. To keep us around, MLP has to take risks and chances of which they have no real way of knowing how they will be tolerated by their viewers. In my mind, this is an example of such a risk; changing the characters' personalities as the show progresses. As I mentioned earlier, most children's shows don't bother with such a thing, and I must applaud the MLP team for having the guts to do so.

Now, whether or not these changes are of the liking to us bronies and younger viewers alike, is something they have yet to figure out. I do believe they are trying their best, but like I said, this is a bit of a new concept, and they've still got some kinks to work out. Not to say that they tailor every characters personality exactly to the fandoms liking, I'm sure they let them develop on their own as the stories flesh out new aspects the writers didn't know existed. Anyone who has worked with stories, RP's, or anything dealing with in-depth fictional characters knows; they're incredibly tricky to develop and keep in check, and as they encounter new situations and acquaintances, their personality will change and adapt over time against what you originally had planned for them.

It's a fine line in the dark the MLP writers have to walk, and I think that they haven't done nearly a half-bad job so far. This new coronation for Twilight throws a whole new set of circumstances for her character, and it will be interesting to see how she (and the writers) cope with this.

Ahhh, I heavily agree with this too.  I'm glad there was a thread made to acknowledge the change in Twilight's personality because I too, miss her sarcastic, innocent-cute-bookwormy, and (since it IS the best word that describes everything about Twilight) adorkable self.  I miss iiiiit!!  :(

I've always reserved a high place in my mind for Twilight, and these changes to her personality have discouraged me a little.  But I feel like they may have put some of Twilight's distinctive traits on hiatus because they wanted to make the transition of "Oh, Twilight's now an alicorn princess, so she should seem to have a more mature vibe to her."  However, if this was the case (not saying it is) then that's silly.  Luna is a ruling princess of Equestria, and we all saw how adorable and silly she was in Luna Eclipsed.  So by altering Twilight's personality to seem like she is more of a princess would seem unnecessary to me.

Hopefully, in the upcoming season 4, we'll see princess Twilight revert back to her awkward ways.  This is what I'm wishing for.  Season 3 Twilight just isn't the same, and isn't the Twilight we all fell in love with.

Yeah, I miss this Twilight:
