Season 3 Finale Opinions: What would you change?

If I could change one thing about the finale, it would be to make it two parts.  I have nothing personally against Twilicorn, but I do feel that a change like that deserves more than one episode.  Now if the rumors are true, and the first two episodes do indeed follow up on this, that will be an improvement.  But at present, it just felt a bit rushed to me.

Besides the overall pacing being to rushed, I disliked that they said the ONLY reason why Twilight became a princess is because she discovered new magic. It's clear this was her destiny for 3 seasons of leading up to that moment so I found that part too minimal on explaining why (although it was explained better in Celestia's Song)

I have made brony music since 2011. I like all kinds of music and genres. I'm sure you'll like some of it..

Make it a two-parter. I personally don't think it was rushed, but they could've always done more epic things with more time.

I really liked the episode. The only thing I would have changed is to maybe give Luna a verse in Celestia's song. It could be along the lines of how she had her doubts, but Twilight proved herself in the end.

I disagree about Luna being there. Yes, she's also a princess, and yes, she was part of the plan to make Twilight an alicorn, but she wasn't Twilight's mentor like Celestia was. The bond Twilight and Celestia has is so much tighter than hers with Luna, and it was a much more personal "teacher-student" moment with just the two of them.

I guess maybe you're right, but I would have liked to have Luna sing too. She and Twilight have started to grow a little closer after Luna learned that the colts and fillies LIKED being scared by her. Oh well. Maybe we'll get more Luna in season four.

Undoubtedly I would make it a two-parter if I could change one thing.  Wouldn't even take out the songs (loved each and every one of them), but a two-part format would allow for a much slower pace and a lot more build up that would really give the season finale a lot higher quality than it already did have.  I loved the season finale as is, but if there's one thing I'd want changed, it'd be that, big time!!! smile.png

While I hate to bore you all with yet another thread about the finale; I would quite like an answer to this. (Sorry if existent - Search did not find anything)

Well anyways; I would really like to know why everyone seems to be backing up this episode so much.

Why am I asking this? Well; I haven't gotten a single answer yet.

I've only heard "I just liked it." or "The songs were good." or even "I know it was rushed, but I liked how they were experimenting, which makes it a good episode."

None of these are reasons I want.

Songs are fine and dandy. I freaking loved The Flim Flam Brother's Super Speedy Cider Squeezy 6000. In fact; it's my favorite song of the show. But I didn't like the episode that much. Of course; songs made up half of this episode, so that point is valid. It's just not enough to love an episode.

Experimenting is great! But; last time I mixed pizza and mint chocolate; it didn't taste too good. I didn't like it. I won't try it again. That's no reason to like something.

And what most people are saying:

"I just liked it."

Why, though? I didn't; and I have multiple things to back up my opinion, while those saying this, don't. What I'm asking for is actual reasons.

Also; don't say the premise was a good idea. I agree completely. I had so much hope for the idea, but it was executed awfully. A good idea is only worth anything if it's done well.

And the last thing. I know that this is supposed to become a three parter. But that's also not a reason. For now; we have this. I am only asking why people like this.

Alright. Thanks all of you who answer! :D

Don't know. Maybe because most of this fandom always gives a sugarcoated opinion without any reason, and anyone who dissagress or dislikes their points of view is a troll/hate

To respond your question, I think some people are backing up the finale because it was terrible and a lot of people can see what's wrong with it.

The finale was mediocre at best, plot-wise.

SUDDENLY EVERYTHING IS CHAOS, OH WHAT AM I GONNA DO? OH RIGHT, USE FRIENDSHIP! THERE, ALL SOLVED! CONGRATULATIONS, TWILIGHT, HAVE WINGS! NOW I'M A PRINCESS!

Yes, yes, I realize this is a girl's show, and that we shouldn't expect deep stories, but c'mon, this was a kick to the groin.

The pacing was godawful, thing that would have been nicely solved in a two-parter. I didn't mind the songs, and the writing had a lot of inconsistencies. Rainbow's destiny is not being a weather pony, for example.

Mob mentality bro. People claim to like the episode for the same reason they claim to like Twilicorn. If they pretend to like it, they feel more hipster and cool and intelligent and shit, and if they don't, they fear everybody is gonna yell at them and call them shitfaced neanderthals. Everybody wants to be the 1 guy that looks "smart" and has "an informed opinion" and they don't wanna be part of the non existant group of people who dislike thie finale. Sorry if this makes like, no sense but if you can decipher it then props to you.

In my case its not so much "like it" as "give it a chance":

We know that Hasbro  flatout ordered the team to make Twilight an alicorn, do it within one episode and have songs in it, so I guess this was the best they could come up with.

They also stated that there will be two more episodes at the start of S4 who'll be connected to this one, so I'll wait and see what comes of it.

As a standalone however its definitely the weakest finale thus far, safed from being truly bad by some good jokes (PInkie!, liquid pride) and Derpy.

I liked the season 3 finale because the show was focusing on Twilight's character development. Although it was poorly done, mainly with how fast it all happened, i still enjoyed it.

Well, I actually really liked the Season Finale; since I'm not going to retype all of my thoughts on why I like it, here, below under the Spoiler bar is everything that I typed up about the finale in my "Season 3 Review" thread when it first premiered.  And trust me everypony, I'm not trying to be 'hipster' or 'cool', I really did like the finale, even though it certainly had its flaws.

The Season Finale

OK, well, as I promised earlier, I’d include a full review of the season finale in my Season 3 review.  So, how did I like the finale?  Overall, I thought it was great, and quite impressive as well, considering Studio B had to pull of everything that they did in this episode in 22 minutes.  Hot dang, that was impressive to say the least, and it didn’t feel rushed for most of the episode for one big reason: Daniel Ingram and his seven songs!  This was officially the first musical episode we’ve ever gotten; I’m not talking about just one or two musical numbers here, no, we had seven songs in 22 minutes, which took up between a third and a half of the episode.  That right there was impressive, and it was a lot of fun to finally see an episode like this.

That said, I will say this as well; I don’t want this to happen again, ever!  “But Batbrony” you may ask in shock, “You just said it was awesome!  Why don’t you want it to happen again?”  Well I’ll tell ya why; TV shows should only ever pull the “musical episode” thing once, and that’s it.  This was a fun, and somewhat necessary, experiment in storytelling for the Studio B crew; however, it still felt at times like it was rushed, despite their best efforts, simply because so much was going on, and I just know that they (and I) would’ve killed to have another episode to cover everything that was happening.  Heck, as Meghan McCarthy herself admitted, this will really in the long run play out to be more like the first part of a 3 part episode, continued in the season opener next season, so clearly there’s a bigger story to be told than what we had to settle with today.  With 26 episodes next season, there is no reason whatsoever that Studio B should have to close next season with a single episode that feels rushed in pacing at times, and I’m glad, because, even though this creative experiment was successful for the most part, I don’t want them to ever be forced again to do something like this on account of time constraints.  I have no doubt that next season, we will be treated to both fully developed season openers and finales that have at least two episodes devoted to them both, maybe even more if Studio B comes up with a particularly epic season finale!

However, what this episode didn’t do, and this is what I think every brony both feared and can agree on, even if they didn’t like the episode that much, was this: jump the shark.  Even if I didn’t hear anypony say it prior to the episode, a meme I saw today following the episode actual pointed this out, and I finally realized that that’s what every brony feared the moment we heard about Alicorn Twilight; we feared, to varying extents, that the show would jump the shark, commit an unforgivable plot development that it could simply never recover from.  While many are still uncertain as to how great Alicorn Twilight will prove to be, I have yet to hear anypony saying that MLP has jumped the shark and committed an irreparable action, and that is great credit to the finale, no matter what your other thoughts about it may be.  Every brony is still looking forward to Season 4 as much as ever, and this finale did nothing to make anypony less excited about it!  Kudos Studio B, kudos.

As for the rest of the episode, it was simply beautiful.  The animation was stunning, the music, as I already alluded to, was time and time again incredible, and overall, it felt like a clip show episode done right!  That’s a little confusing I know, considering that there was a lot of new plot developments going on throughout the whole episode, but think about it this way; everything that happened was the culmination of the events of the first 64 episodes, as Celestia herself explained at the end.  Everything that’s happened in the show has been building up to this.  Throughout the whole episode, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia, because really the primary theme of this episode was basically how much Twilight’s friends have come to mean to her and each other, and that, the magic of friendship, is, after all, the foundation of the show and fandom itself.  So like I said, it kind of, in some ways, felt like a clip show, but a clip show done right, which is incredibly impressive considering those are so often just awful filler episodes in most TV series that try to pull them off!

The humor was great (especially from Pinkie Pie towards the end; two words, “ALICORN PARTY!!!!!”); the heartstring tugging was sincere and oh so saddening, especially seeing how absolutely lost, forlorn, and despairing the Mane 6 were with their cutie marks all askew and messed up; their eventual triumph couldn’t have been executed better, especially with a song like “True, True Friend,” and it simply highlighted just how very close and loving these friends are (they even said to each other at the end that they love each other, tell me, when was the last time you saw characters in a kids show, that aren’t family members, say to each other, in a sincere manner, that they love each other?); and while Twilight’s transformation, which was handled excellently, was the overall emphasis of the episode, the episode went to great lengths to ensure us that the show will stay focused on all of them.  Twilight may be the main character, but this is the Mane 6’s story, not just Twilight’s, and it will remain so for as long as the show runs, of that I have no doubt.  After all, the final words of the episode were basically a shout out to us bronies even, with the Mane 6 and Twilight’s assurance that everything will be just fine!  How can you not feel reassured after that?  Overall, although certainly rushed at times, this might very well be my favorite episode of the season.

Oh yeah, and one more thing: Derpy’s back.  Derpy’s back.  Oh let me say that again, because it feels so very good to say it, DERPY’S BACK!!!!!!!  As the resident Derp Knight of the forums, I’m not gonna lie, this was basically my reaction when I saw that she was in the episode not once, but five times, and even broke the fourth wall:

Basically, you're reason is that it tried to do something, but failed miserably? And that's why you like it? Kay.

I mentioned that it was rushed and certainly didn't want them to repeat this episode formula ever again; that doesn't count as cons?

Plus, how is it a completely biased review?  It's only biased if I'm trying to represent somepony else's interests (like Hasbro's) or came into the episode with a "I'm going to like this no matter what" mentality; I was only trying to represent my honest opinion in that review.

I have a few ideas. May not be true and may not be the best, but possible.

One idea I have is that people are imposing their expectations onto the end result. Like your birthday party that was supposed to be super awesome and ended up being really lame, but you were expecting it to be awesome, so you tell yourself it was. They were expecting something amazing for the finale, probably due to the last's season's amazing finale. But then, when it didn't meet their expectations, they still didn't want to believe that it was as bad as it was. So they delude themselves into thinking it was good, and presto, they don't have to be disappointed.

Another idea I have is that some people are scared to admit that they don't like it. I remember once a while ago, I mentioned that I didn't think season 2 was as good as season 1. People jumped down my throat. One of the downfalls of this community, I feel, is the defensiveness over the series. I mean, of course, it's good to defend something you like, but that doesn't mean that other people aren't entitled to their own opinions. Some people, knowing this, may be worried that they say anything negative, it means that they don't like the show, or something like that. And for people to whom the community is very important, that might be a worrisome thought.

And, there is the possibility that people just like it. I do think that there are probably some people who are either lying to themselves or others about liking it. But I also think some people probably genuinely liked it. And this can go without reason. Liking something doesn't have to have a reason. I like vinegar on sandwiches. I can't justify that preference with an explanation. I just like it. In the same way, people may legitimately like this episode without being able to justify it. And to me, that's alright. I have definitely not been silent about my dislike for this episode, but who am I to get on other people's cases about it if they do? Live and let live.

I can answer your question.

The 3D effects are just plain amazing and I liked the plot and it was just a good episode. I also liked the song because of it's tone and fast pace.

I would suggest reading the OP again. I specifically said that the songs quality weren't one of the things I wanted to be an answer. The plot was a good idea, as I said. But it wasn't executed well. I didn't even notice many nice visuals; but it's this show, so I'm sure it was stellar. Regardless; eye candy is generally not why I like something (Except maybe with Moulin Rouge)

Oh, sorry. Must have passed over that bit. ^^' I was just skimming, but I'll re read it sooonnn.

I like it because the writers molded the best cube they could with what play dough they were given on the table. In other words, since it was Hasbro's idea to make Twilight an Alicorn princess to sell toys, they were forced to work that into the plot. Although, they made it seem (to me at least) as though they were alluding to the outcome from the beginning.

I do agree that the whole episode was rushed, and if it weren't for the songs, Alicorn Twilight, and the consideration above, I'd throw rotten tomatoes at the stage as well. There were a lot of things wrong with the episode, but my views on what they did right can (ever so slightly) outweigh them.

Ignoring the song quality is like saying "You have to tell me why you like chocolate, except the answer cannot be that it tastes good."

It makes no sense.

Oh, sorry. Must have passed over that bit. ^^' I was just skimming, but I'll re read it sooonnn.

Oh that's alright, I understand, it is a really long review after all. tongue.png   Yeah, if you get a chance to reread it, I hope it turns out to be along the lines of the type of explanation you were looking for, especially the latter half of the review.  Let me know what you think! smile.png

As I said already, what if I didn't know that? Then I would just take it for what it is, and it's not good. But, I see your point.

Uhm. Ya. Songs are a bit less heavy weighted then the main point of a snack. So it does make sense... quite a bit.

Yeah but you have to remember that this was different, the finale was practically a musical with how many songs it had. Songs made up most of the episode.

Well, yes. And I'm talking about how the story is conveyed.

The songs could be crap, and it would still do the same thing for the plot.

Plus; if you like it for the songs, that's fine. I didn't like the songs though. I'm asking for a reason. (And I didn't find them catchy, like at all. Which is what everyone has been saying)

Since what I'm getting from this is that you want someone's opinion on the episode as long as they agree with you?

If you don't find the songs catchy, that doesn't invalidate the opinion.

I guess i'll talk about the plot, I found it unique. It wasn't predictable and I'd never seen it done before.
