Why Do People Get Weird on Bronies?

Harmony Spark

Recommended Posts

When I was at my step-sister's birthday party, I saw a Princess Cadance toy lying on the floor. I was shocked at this disrespect and I secretly combed it and dressed it up. However, people looked at me like I was crazy. So I'm saying to all bronies and pegasisters out there, should we show people to respect our pony fandom or to let them intimidate us?

Honestly if you're asking this question the thing you need more of is self-respect. Don't let them intimidate you OP, you're a unique and wonderful person who just happens to be in a unique and wonderful fandom, don't let anyone ever tell you there's something wrong with that.

Well, you sound a bit angry about it...

I don´t wonder about it too much, I mean... I wear my Rainbow Dash shirt at partys and in public, I might get a weird look by people idk, but I keep telling myself: I like it, my friends think it´s cool (or funny, or both xD), why should I care too much what the others think?

I mean, it´s different, that´s for sure, but that surely doesn´t make it bad, not at all. It´s cool to me, and why should I be afraid for liking it?

You probably know the "keep calm  and brony on"-meme, that would fit in such a situation...

Just don´t get mad at those people, respect theri opinion and act all natural 8cool, if you wanna call it that)

btw, happy welcome to the forums, hope you like it here ;)

"Mainstream" society is likely to freak out at something like being a brony because we are a social deviance (Ballad of the Brony for the win). Do not let it get to you though, don't give into the haters. I wear my MLP shirts in school and not to many people care, but for the people that do I just explain to them that I watch FiM and tell them about the fourth generation and to deal with it. By the way welcome to the forums hope to see you on other posts.

If I could, I'd wear pony stuff all the time, but the only piece of merch I have is a G3 MLP nightshirt that is made for 6 year olds. LOL

I need to go shopping. I'd say, don't give a buck about what others say, you know that the fandom is awesome, and the other people are just saying that because they would seem to be 'socially awkward' if they didn't. probably because they want to look manly.

Don't bother with them. Admitting what you like and being different against other people's opinions is the manliest thing you could ever do! Just ignore them, they're just following the crowd.

Well, put yourself in their shoes. Think of it this way... Imagine you weren't a brony. Then you saw a guy pick up a doll and played with it by himself. Wouldn't that at least make you feel weird about it even if by a little? Because that's what they probably felt and we can't blame them for it. Most people don't regard us Bronies as the social norm. To them its "Dolls and Ponies are for little girls". So its natural for them to be weirded out by it. Unfortunately its something a Brony has to contend with in a group of Non-Bronies. Specially if said Non-Bronies are narrow minded. But don't let it get to you. We can't expect them to immediately understand what being a Brony is. You can tell them about it. Now if they choose to close their minds then its their loss on a chance to experience something wonderful.

People will always have their own opinions and views over something.  I personally believe we shouldn't let other people bully us for what we like but we shouldn't intimidate them about it as well. Aggressively defending (or promoting) the fandom will only draw negative attention to yourself. Even to the fandom itself.
So relax. Don't let it get to you. Don't be insecure about it.

I understand bronies seek respect but to be real here- it's just a fandom. It's not as if the other fandoms demand respect simply because they go against social norm.

If you wanna wear your pony pride around, go for it, but don't be shocked if you get weird glances from people passing by. I thought it was kinda known by all bronies that you're going against what's seen as normal- the odd looks are going to happen.

I do have to say something

Once you get into the fandom you kinda have to know that there are going to be people that don't understand or will respect your decision.

By being a brony we are breaking the social norms and that's bound to get us strange looks.

It's not something we can avoide, I mean there is always going to be someone who will look at you strange by liking My Little Pony.

As long as you are okay with yourself being who you are then your fine.

I would feel pretty much the same way I felt when I first found out about bronies, I would find it a little strange but harmless. Just because something is strange dosen't give people the right to treat someone like they are some kind of freak for enjoying it. I do agree that some bronies can be a little too aggressive with promoting or defending the fandom though which is why the approach I have decided to take is except for wearing my Discord shirt and maybe some other ones in the future I don't really go out of my way to tell anyone about it but if someone asks I will fess up and if they don't understand than I don't give them the satisfaction of letting it get to me and just move on.

It's against the social "norm" to alot of people.  I get it all the time when I wear my t-shirts to places.  People will be people, so don't let it anger you.

I'm gonna be honest here and say that since the normal isn't to be into MLP and such, your going to get weird looks. You can't really expect society to be cool with it, because chances are they won't be.

That said you should really just try and ignore them. Be who you are, because anything less isn't you.

When I talk about the show, it transcends the "Wow, that's weird you like MLP" and becomes "Wow - it's so strange that someone like you would enjoy MLP; now I'm really curious about it." So, that's kind of cool.

I'm a writer, and if I get the opportunity to mention a show with good writers to people and evangelize them over Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, I'm helping to secure my spot in Writer's Heaven. (Which I'm assuming will have never-ending hard alcohol available.)

I had a huge WTF moment when a good friend on mine said he liked the show and urged me to give it a shot as he seemed like one of the last people that would be into a show like that. But my natural curiosity much of it involving him telling me about Discord got the better of me I gave it a shot and here I am.

I also wanted to add that if you secretly dressed it up and combed it but people still looked at you strange, your biggest problem might be the fact that your relatives have mind-reading powers.

Its the same as everybody else has mentioned. Its something not considered to be the social norm, so in natural ways, the majority of people will look at it oddly and weird. This is something I've grown to expect from most people.

The way i broke it to most of my friends is the vinyl Funko Rainbow Dash figure I put on our coffee table in the middle of our college common room (to put it in perspective, my room was a quad, with 2 rooms for two people each, and a common room we all share). Days passed and I calmly answered questions about it, and actually had a ton of fun with the overall reactions people had to this.

But most of them were pretty cool about it, and I joke about it and mention it all the time. I'm even training to become a DJ at my college radio (I talk and play music, I don't mix it), and my DJ name is exactly what you think. DJ Rainbow Dash. tongue.png

But point being, have confidence in what you do, and what you like. Its part of your individualism. smile.png

This thread appears to be related to the My Little Pony franchise and/or the Bronydom in general. Thus, it has been sentenced to Sugarcube Corner.

This is an automatically generated message, by the way.

Actually, let them think you're weird. In fact, don't get mad if someone comes up to you and starts telling you how weird you are because you like a little girls show. To be honest, before I became a brony, I used to respect bronies a lot because of how different they were. I always hated mainstream things, I always wanted to be that different person. So if someone gives you a weird look, be happy. It just means you're not a part of this broke society

Hey, lots of people just don't know how to be happy... I was bashed on neowin forums for liking a certain company and they thought I was paid off or something and I wasn't I was just really happy about them!!! I think people are just envious of people being truly happy about something.... ignore them and they are not worth your time.
