Not a furry. Used to be part of that "Furries are icky" crowd till I became a brony. It sort of changed me after I saw a lot of parallels between our subcultures. We aren't the same. Furry fandom is less focused and more wides pride while bronies revolve around a single show.. But we're both a fandom of grown adults with an artistic inclination, which does contain a seedier subset of fans which draw us ire. I see a lot of myself I'm furries but anthro animals just don't interest me.

No, not at all.  And when I was a brony I wasn't either.

I am on some level. I don't really do much in the furry fandom but I like the characters, the art and a lot of my favorite webcomics are furry comics. While it's not really a rule it seems to me that the furry comics are usually the only ones who keep my attention for long periods of time. The writing isn't tied to the fact that they are furry comics, it's just one bigass coincidence that all the furry comics happen to be the best in writing as well as artstyle.

Some even start out pretty crappy in both departments but end up becoming pretty amazeballs later on like Dan & Mab's Furry Adventures.

Meh, I guess so. I do enjoy the art and such. Some of it is really good and cool. And I don't mind animals or anthros. But I'm not really active with the communtiy or anything. I just like the art however I don't typically go out and seek the art either. Furries are cool people and all but I'm not really as into it as I am with some of the other fandoms I associate with.

I call myself a furry, but "furry" is really more of an umbrella group with many, many sub-groups under it.  What I have discovered after many years of calling myself a "furry" is that I am actually, more specifically, a therian.

Therians aren't just fans of anthro art or goofy people who dress up in costumes.  A therian is a person who identifies as a certain animal, generally in a spiritual sense, but it doesn't necessarily have to be a spiritual/religious thing.  It just means that you feel like you are an animal, even though you are human.

I am an aardwolf.

Of course, aside from just being an aardwolf, I also have different fursonas, or characters that represent different aspects of myself.  I've got four of them, not including my ponysona.  Three of the four are aardwolves (Rainshine, Adrien, and Jeffy), and the last one is a pudu (his name is Pudu).

I've always wondered what a furry means

I know it's something related to animals but I don't really know

There are many definitions of Furry.  These are the most popular:

  • a person who identifies as a certain animal or represents himself using an anthropomorphic animal character
  • a person who draws anthropomorphic art ("anthropomorphic" means being non-human but having human characteristics, such as MLP characters or Bugs Bunny, etc.)
  • a person who dresses in an animal costume and/or attends conventions with others who do
  • a fan of anthropomorphic art and/or characters
  • an anthropomorphic animal character

There are lots of other definitions as well, but these are the basic ones that pretty much cover all information you need to know.  Of course, once you actually get into the fandom, you start seeing other sub-groups that go with it, including Therians and Otherkin, and then of course there are always the furverts (people who are only into the fandom for the sexual parts of it) that give the entire furrydom a bad name.

Some even consider it more of a culture than simply a fandom, and there are those who don't accept all definitions of the word.

It's a highly varied group/subculture/fandom/etc.

What have you got to be afraid of?

Depends on how you look at it. I'll look at stuff with anthros and read/write about anthros but they don't.... excite... me. Admittedly though I can see why some have that effect on those into that kinda thing but again not my kind of fun.

I LOVE that comic, I found it back in High-School when it was still only around 1100 pages and binged through it(as well as the side comics) in about a week or so. I was almost sad when I finally hit the last page posted at the time.

It's been a while so I probably have dozens more to read now, though.

I'm a furry too!

I guess I'm not active in the furry community in any way, but I like anthro art and anything with that style automatically attracts my attention. For a while I used to draw furry characters and in the novel I'm writing now one of the races is furry.

Have you read the latest side story, Matilda? As the name implies it explains Matilda's backstory. It's the longest one yet besides Abel's backstory. It's probably finishing soon and it's already at 48 pages.

Not yet, I'm a few months behind on it.

Thank you for the explanation.

No problem.  I'm glad I could be helpful.

Nope. Everybody (or the general audience of cartoons) likes anthropomorphic creatures. Video games, animates movies, shows, you name it. There are animals with human characteristics everywhere. Being a furry is obsessing about animals and I don't find anything wrong with that. I don't know what percentage of furries are into the dirty stuff, but it must be small compared to mlp r34 stuff. I have NEVER seen a furry image from an image search. To assume all furries are into that kind of stuff would be a bad generalization. It's like outsiders assuming all bronies clop. It is false information that makes somebody conclude their thoughts on something they know little about. So once again, no. I am not a furry, but I still love animals.

I can say yes to this, I was a part of the for community for a while and I still like it but I'm not as active with it as I used to be and because of this I can now admit this circle of logic.

Pony led to fur led to pony.

Take that for what you will

I chose "fluttershy is a furry" because it was the most hilarious option.

Really though, I don't mind them. The ones that DO make all the gross r34 stuff are better at keeping their pictures off the internet than cloppers are. I have almost never seen a sexual furry picture.

People at my school think I'm a furry when I say "Animals generally make better cartoon characters." I love animals but I'm not a furry.
