Foods You Have Eaten That Most People Haven't Heard Of

Since my Dad has used to own an Italian restaurant and I have some pretty awesome cooks in my family I got exposed to a lot of great foods many of which most people haven't heard of.

Mufaletta: A popular specialty sandwich in New Orleans and the most popular lunch at my Dad's former restaurant. It is two pieces of round Italian flat bread with ham, salami, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and a special olive spread served with home made fries and your choice of soup or salad.

Pastina: Italian for little pasta it is an Italian chicken soup dish, my grandmother made hers with fresh vegetables and added a little tomato sauce for a nice zesty flavor.

Pinalada (not to be confused with the Mexican cocktail Pina Colada): This is an Italian desert where you have these small cookies and nuts drenched in honey with a consistency almost like a gooey peanut brittle.

Chocolate Meatballs: No they are not literally meatball covered in chocolate, they are actually these small chocolate cookies with chocolate chips and walnuts topped with a vanilla icing.

Biscotti's: Italian hard cookies with nuts that are often dunked in coffee

Cucidada's: An Italian cookie that is basically like a fig newton except way way better.

Tiramisu: Italian for "pick me up" it is a sweet desert whose main ingredients consist of mariscapone cheese, chocolate chips and espresso. It is often served in cake form but is sometimes served in a glass bowl.

Gelatto: Italian ice cream, imagine the best ice cream you have ever had and multiply it 10 times and that is how good Gellato is and I mean the real deal.

Canadedi: It is a traditional Italian pastry served around Easter time it is a soft cookie with vanilla icing and sprinkles on top with a hard boiled egg in the middle.

Tres Leches: A mexican cake that is almost like a very creamy sponge cake with 3 different layers of cream and often also contain strawberries. I tried it at a coworkers baby shower and it wasn't too bad.

Pao Hu: Chinese for "hot burning pork" it is sauted pork served in a spicy peanut sauce with chopped red peppers and peanuts. It is my favorite dish at my favorite Chinese restaurant.

Vegemite. It's a Austrailian spread that tastes HORRIBLE. It's the kind of food that you have to grow up with to like... I vomited twice eating just a small chunk of it..

I've had a dish called Stargazy pie. It's a pie containing pilchard, except... they're whole pilchards. Yeah, they keep the head on :3

img20120307000534099.jpg

The head pokes out of the top of the pie, to make it look like the fish is stargazing. It's actually pretty tasty. But on the topic of this thread, I doubt you'll have ever heard of this dish... ever, unless you've been to Cornwall.

Wispa. It's a chocolate bar made by Cadbury's that's sold over here in the UK. It only returned a few years ago after a huge petition and successful limited time re-launch though. I wasn't alive when the original Wispas were in circulation though.

I managed to eat or at least nibble on one of this weird fruit.

img-1714185-1-green-durian.jpg

It is infamous for being smelly and generally not good, but after my nibble, never again....

Durian. The smell of hell, the taste of heaven they claim. Bullshit I claim. it's bloody awfull.

I ate caterpillars that had been dried out in the sun, in Africa. They tasted like burnt bacon. I also had dried game meat called Biltong. You don't chew it too long or you taste the blood. Then there were raw sea urchins in spain-that one left a mark.

Eggs.

Duck eggs.

Duck eggs buried in salty mud for two weeks. And if that ain't enough for you... Duck eggs with an unborn chick in it. Yes, it's a real food. No, I've only tried the salted duck egg, not balut.

Also, ice cream. Ice cream with corn and cheese.

Not so much odd foods, but common-sounding American foods with a Filipino take to it.

And ketchup. Ketchup made out of bananas. Didn't really get a chance to really try it, though...

Here's where it gets odd.

And (and this was so popular back at my multicultural high school that it's probably hard to find someone who hasn't heard of it) lumpia. Don't know what it is? The closest equivalent is an egg roll, but the wrapper's made of rice.

And dinuguan. It's a stew made of pig meat and pig blood.

Dare I go on?

I don't know if this counts or not, but I really like eating peanut butter and Nutella sandwiches. It's sorta like eating a Reese's cup in the form of a sandwich.

Tres Leches: A mexican cake that is almost like a very creamy sponge cake with 3 different layers of cream and often also contain strawberries. I tried it at a coworkers baby shower and it wasn't too bad.

I've eaten this plenty of times at parties before, I don't like it. I'm just not a fan of cake.

Squid, Octopus, ghost chile peppers, pasties, deer heart, crocidile (I think thats how you spell it) shark, and some other unknown Asian foods that one dares not ask what is contained inside :P

Squid and octopus are quite good, it's one of those foods that you just don't want to eat it because either A. you know what it is or B. It looks very strange.

Ghost chiles are just plain rediculus, my father like extremely spicy foods and eat these no problem.

Pasties are normally a mix of vegatables and meat that is contained within a thin crust.

When we were ocean fishing we caught some sharks and they are quite blan, but with the right seasons and sauce will taste delcious.

I am Norwegian, and one thing we have is called Klub (it has one of those umlaut things over the 'u')  basically they are ground ham and potato dumplings that are covered in flour, boiled and then drowned in butter.  The end result resembles baby vomit, but it is possibly one of the best things I have ever tasted.  On a side note: the morning after you make Klub, you slice up the leftovers and then fry it in the remaining butter to make the ultimate hash browns.

I've eaten an iguana once... unintentionally...

I was at a party and someone offered me some finger food. So there was this type of grilled meat on toothpicks so I decided to have one of those. Goddamn, it tasted heavenly. I asked him where he had gotten that chicken. He laughed at me and said, "Chicken? That's iguana my friend."

Believe me. He was serious.

Uh, idk I really can't say I've ate much of anything that people haven't heard of, that i know atleast.

I ate Aligator meat before, but i'm pretty sure people know what an Aligator is...

Maybe Gumbo or jambalya, only two things I can think of right now that might not be common to everyone.

I love vegemite, and I'm not Australian. :c

The weirdest things I've had are probably alligator jerky (popular where I live), crocodile chowder, kangaroo jerky, and kangaroo steak.

Boerenkool. It's a really good Dutch dish. It is mashed potatoes and finely chopped kale, mixed well (should have a nice green colour). Add salt (don't be stingy) and serve with Dutch sausage. Mustard is commonly added, but optional.

Boerenkool v.2.0 (North American, lazy version): Instant potatoes and canned kale served with smokies.

It's not especially weird, but very few people who lack Dutch ancestry have heard of it.

Boudin. It's a sausage filled with gator, rice, some spices. Really really tasty.

Puffball steaks. It is a type of mushroom that grows wild, they look like a volley ball. You slice them up and grill them like a steak. Add butter and black pepper.

Last, I don't know many people who have heard of chili pepper chocolate. Sounds gross but it totally works.

This is this one flavor I tried at my favorite Gellato place called Mayan Chocolate that is flavored with Mexican red peppers. The contast of sweet spicy works quite well with that particular combination especially with the kick you get with the aftertaste.

I am reminded of two other foods that I somehow forget, both Italian deli meats.

Capicolla: it is a cured ham that can be served either spicy or sweet that makes one killer sand which.

Pancetta: to put it simply it is Italian bacon pretty much any bacon is going to taste good but this is bacon when it really brings its A game.

capirotada- mexican bread pudding. basically its a mushy, delightful combination of bread, nuts, raisins, cinnamon, some spices, sugar, and cheese. capirotada is always cooked around lent or easter. :3 my uncle cooks it every year, its very delicious!

i cooked authentic ramen once, one of the ingredients was narutomaki. aka spiral fishcake. i had to buy that at an asian market, lol.

i also love buying uncommon/weird fruit img-1878692-1-wink.png lychees, starfruit, mangosteens, dragonfruit. love that stuff.

EDIT: i'd like to add one more.

nopales con huevo (cactus and egg tacos)- another mexican dish! the thorns are removed of course, and the cactus is chopped and cooked. mix it with eggs, salsa, and throw it all in a flour tortilla for breakfast! the cactus looks and tastes like green beans, except kinda slimy and a little more bitter/sour. they aren't terrible, but i wouldn't really consider myself a fan of cactus tacos. i'd much rather just stick to my usual barbacoa tacos. tongue.png

Well, one Thanksgiving at my dad's I'm pretty sure I ate the turkey's heart, liver, and at least one of the kidneys. unsure.png  Yeah... that was when I was just entering high school puberty, so my appetite was expanding and I was getting a little more adventurous in the food department than I used to be.  It was tasty though! derpy_emoticon1.png  These days, I'm still pretty adventurous; long as bugs or some nasty health-nut thing like tofu aren't involved, if I can I'll pretty much try anything.  Just haven't had many opportunities to try the more bizarre dishes out there.
