What's your favourite instrument category?

Do you prefer string instruments? Or perhaps percussion? Maybe brass or woodwind? What do you guys like?

My personal favourite is percussion, that's why I'm learning the piano. My second favourite would be woodwind then brass then string.

String is my personal favorite. Why? Well, most string instruments tend to sound so beautiful, I love the violin the most, though.

Well... I may be very biased (And I am honestly xD. I won't even lie) but i like brass the most, because I play trumpet, and while I've been trying to sorta learn keyboard(which hasn't been making much progress exactly.) along with the time I wanted to learn Guitar, but didn't really get that far either, Trumpet is still obviously my favorite as i'm best with it.

That said i'm not that good in general anyways, but ya know :P.

Still, I love music in general, so as far as sound goes I love them all for their own uniqueness, its a good combination that makes great music :).

Woodwind, because I used to play the Saxophone, kind of wish I still played it :/. Still think it is a damn cool instrument to play.

Also String, because of the Guitar of course. Wish I could play the guitar, might still attempt to learn it, going to have tons of free time in college.

I like the aerophones, which is really how you should have did your poll. Anything that requires wind to make its sound. Especially when many instruments fall under two categories such as piano which is a string and percussion instrument. The aerophones have this cool ability to create dynamics unlike any other family. Especially the clarinet, the instrument is famous for it ability to play almost silently than with ease become super loud all on the same note. Then there is the french horn, the instrument is really hard to play, but a great horn player is unlike anything in the world. Some of the best character themes in movies are played on the french horn. Like the piano the French horn is considered part of two families, the woodwinds and the brass (despite it being a brass instrument). There are other great instruments but I don't want to go into any more detail.

TL;DR clarinet and french horn FTW!

Since I play guitar myself I would have to say that I love me some string instruments.

I would however love to start playing something in the woodwind category. Those instruments intrigue me somehow.

STRING IZ BEST. But I play guitar so that makes me biased. I also want to learn how to play bass later on.

Lol wut, I thought the piano was a stringed instrument.

its both. The strings are actually played by a percussion like mechanism which is why it is a percussion instrument. Also because piano is used as a percussion instrument in many orchestral works. Saint-Sean's Concerto no. 3 (aka the Organ Concerto) and Aaron's Copland's Rodeo are two good examples.

I don't know everything about instruments, but I played in my school marching band for a year an helped with the percussion instruments.

I think a lot of them are cool, including the piano.

Sorry, I sound (and am) so unintelligent about this subject. I just don't like anything you blow into and I dislike plucking strings. I gave Violin a shot and stank.

Okay, so the piano is a mutant string/percussion hybrid instrument created by the Flying Spaghetti Monster using black magic.

Oh, gee, I don't know... I'll have to think hard on this one...

Just kidding. xD

Woodwinds, of course! But even though I'd say I prefer woodwinds over brass, I really like both woodwinds and brass over everything else. And even though I love string instruments, I do have to say they are quite overrated nowadays. I'm just sayin'. Getting really tired of series like Animal Crossing and The Sims adding excessive amounts of string instruments and every other instrument section, while leaving woodwind/brass instruments completely out for no reason. >.>

I know... A silly complaint. At least they can't take away my woodwind/brass instruments nor the music that is really only awesome because it has them in it. lol

And the organ is the same thing, but its a wind/percussion instrument instead. Also the guy who invented A^2+B^2=C^2 discovered the overtones, which is what our western scales are based on.

What? I have never seen the french horn referred to as a woodwind instrument in ANY of my studies. It's included in woodwind quintets, but I believe that's just because the french horn was the most popular brass instrument alongside the woodwinds along the time of the invention of the woodwind quintet. (I don't know, though, I'd have to look into that.) In which case, they were called "wind quintets" anyway.

I really like Brass the best. Mostly because I played Tuba for 3 years. I also like how brass sounds the most compared to other instruments.

The instrument is purely a brass instrument so your studies aren't wrong. To not look at this instrument and realized is less powerful than the rest of its family, but also has a sound that is akin to another family; that would be foolhardy.

The French horn has always sounded exclusively like a brass instrument to me. There's nothing "foolhardy" about that. That's an opinion you have, but it's not one I've ever heard before.

Well put, from an orchestration standpoint it good to use the instrument in ways like the brass, and ways like woodwinds. You miss out on a lot when you forget that it can do woodwind like stuff. That doesn't change the fact that its in a physical sense a brass instrument

My favorite is percussion, but I'm a bit biased since that's what I play.  ;)

I play the piano, too. I know it's technically a percussion instrument, but I've always thought of keyboards to be in their own separate little sub-category. Sort of like how percussion can mainly be split up into drums and mallet instruments.

It always annoys me how some other people in the band insult the percussionists because our instruments are "so easy to play" and say that "they could do it just as well, if not better". Sure, anyone with a brain could hit a drum with a stick, but it takes practice and skill to fully master all of the instruments in the percussion section. And I can guarantee you that half of the other band members couldn't keep a beat to save their life, if it weren't for the percussion keeping everything in time.

Okay, my rant is over. I love all instruments, I just like the ones I play a bit more.  :P

That'd have to be percussion. While strings would be in pretty close pursuit, it's percussion that can make or break a song for me. Some of my favourite tracks are my favourite tracks because of the bearing the drum line plays, or the effect a piano riff has. Some of my favourite songs where the percussive aspect has impressed me:

Yep, the percussions are the easiest intruments to play, but the hardest to master.

The guitar is even easier to master for me.

Tell them to try playing the drums, and to talk at same time. It is impossible, unless you mastered your instrument lol.

And I'm a cupcake!

Woodwind of course. Yeah, part of why it's my favorite is because I play saxophone, but the biggest reason is just because woodwind instruments sound beautiful. The Clarinets, the flutes, the saxophones, the oboes, the bassoons, I just can't get enough of them.

Got to go with string, I played the violin in the 7-8th grade, I loved it! The violin can make some of the most beautiful sounds you could ever hear or it can make some of the scariest music to ever ring in your ear drums. Still play it from time to time.

I am a huge sucker for string instruments. Their sound is just divine and I have always wanted to be able to take up the violin. The violin is quite a versatile piece of work. The next favourite would be woodwinds. They were the first category of instruments that I played (that being the clarinet).
