I don't know if its just me but it seems that Princess Celestia doesn't do anything! Supposedly she is the most powerful Alicorn their is but i have yet to see any of her immense powers.

Celestia helps those who help themselves!

Cuz she's busy with real duties, lifting the sun, and helping her sister recover after her time in/on the moon.

From Luna Eclipsed, it looks like she's been doing a great job with that...

That's really all there is to say on the matter.

Just because we don't see her do anything doesn't mean she doesn't do anything. She rules over all of Equestria, we generally only see Ponyville. She probably just has to divide her time between the problems of every village and city.

Jokes aside, I think she's probably just busy with the many offscreen duties that come with being a ruler. Honestly if the show was about how Celestia ruled Equestria I'm sure the main six wouldn't have nearly as much a focus as they do now.

She does many things, we just don't often see them. We know for one that she raises the sun every morning. This can't be an easy task, even for an Alicorn with her immense power. But then again, after having raised the sun AND the moon for one thousand years, she must be used to it.

Another one of her duties is she is a Teacher. Remember "The Cutie Mark Chronicals"? Twilight was personally invited by the Princess to Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns, as her personal protégé. Now, we aren't actually told that Celestia is an instructor at the school, but since she is the only Alicorn around (Remember, This was before Luna ;) ) her presence would have been essential for classes of higher education.

Another notice, In Swarm of the Century, Celestia was meant to visit ponyville, but is required to cancel due to an "infestation" in Fillydelphia. Celestia is sworn to protect the ponies of Equestria, from any dangers that may arise. Cause she is the most awesome Alicorn around... aside from Luna anyways :P

That's a question you should be asking here though; What is it that Luna has been doing all this time, since she was transformed back to her normal self by the Elements of Harmony? All we know of so far is that she came to Ponyville once for Nightmare Night. Nothing more. We need more Luna... GIMME MORE LUNA!!! :(

Actually I have a theory on that. Luna's magic is probably unstable so Celestia is more then likely to be trying to keep her out of trouble and help her get back on her hooves so to speak. Remember the spell she used to take on Nightmare Moon's appearence? If she could do that spontaniously then think...What else could she do filly sized? She probably had to get used to flying again too so Celestia besides doing all her royal duties was likely teaching her to re-do things like that and using her magic...But apparently failed to teach her sister about casual speaking.

What a great sister eh?

Being a ruler of a worl- ... countr- uhh... I dont know what Equestria is for sure, but being a supreme being must mean you have little to no free time at all. So far, I've only seen her raise the sun, read Twilight's letters, and come to parties Ponyville makes for her.

....What does she do in her free time?

  • 4 years later...

Because everyone would bitch that she is OP and makes the Mane 6 pointless.

I see her as more of a plot device than a character most of the time. She provides advice, insight and information that helps guild the mane 6 and ultimately the story along a given path.

We have seen her do things in the past and have a working idea of how strong she is already, but honestly we would go right back to the resentment if she started showing up and blowing up every little threat that appeared in Equestria. I would love to see an episode about her, but one aimed either at her and Luna in relation to their past and origins, or a slice of life dealing with her as a character and her way of guiding and manipulating the mane 6. That is a particular power of hers I have yet to see any exploration of. It is painfully obvious she knows a lot more than she let's on.. some story and background into that would be pretty interesting I feel.

~No profound statement needed~

E.g.:

1. Fixed Twilight's mess in Lesson Zero.

2. Helped Luna semi-defeat Sombra via flashback in The Crystal Empire.

3. Discord-proofed the Elements in Keep Calm And Flutter On.

4. Helped delay the blizzard and repair the Crystal Heart in The Crystalling.

The last one, regarding The Crystalling, is probably the closest we'll get to seeing Celestia actually protect her citizens alongside Luna and the other Princesses, Shining Armor, and the Mane Six for the time being as after what happened in To Where and Back Again, I'm wondering if the writers even give a flying feather about her anymore and will give her another major role again in the Season 7 premiere or not.

I really would like an episode dedicated to Celestia, if not her and Luna, or the entire Royal Family, at some point in the future, if the writers are even willing to do that, judging from how the Royal Family were treated back in To Where and Back Again is any indication of that.

They've had at least 6 years and 6 seasons to do something with Celestia. With over 140 episodes, that's over 3000 minutes, which is more than 33 90-minute movies. Just think about that. Considering what has come before, they definitely don't care about her, so there's no chance of her getting a meaningful spotlight. This isn't taking into account the problems that need to be answered involving her character from previous episodes.

I'll admit that I pretty much don't care for the 2-parters anymore because they make too little sense due to a certain problem that has persisted and been unanswered for too long, so the problem has only gotten worse over time.

People will keep saying that her presence will make these stories end too soon or quickly, but is making her helpless and throwing her aside really the way to fix that problem? Her uselessness is instead the problem. I know someone else will say that she gets to do important stuff off-screen. Why is it off-screen, then? She doesn't have to deal with the politics of Equestria, or whatever a person might consider boring. Is it too much to see how her duties and actions dramatized? I really don't think I'm making an unreasonable demand, so the writers are either dumb or indifferent (or both) about handling Celestia.

not sure. it may be because she is a symbol to the ponies of equestria. she may believe that showing her powers may frighten the other ponies. or she may be like human twilight, who is the most powerful magical being in the human relm. she may believe if she uses her power, a darkness would over take her.

That much I agree with on how the writers are treating Celestia lately. I'm really getting tired of her being made a Damsel In Distress that needs to be rescued in most season premieres/finales, especially recently in To Where and Back Again with the rest of the Royal Family and Elements of Harmony. I know most people believe having Celestia involved solves the problem without much difficulty and trouble, but wouldn't it be better if she could at least be there as a pillar of support instead of having to be rescued all the time?

That much makes sense when you consider the dark side of Celestia seen in merchandise, A.K.A. Nightmare Star.

In one of the IDW comics, Spike questioned Celestia upon why she lets Twilight off to save Equestria and why not her. Celestia concurred that it is invaluable for her to not intervene because it would not teach Twilight important lessons and to realize that she as a student must be put to the test. I know it may seem rather reluctant but Celestia might actually know somehow that Twilight and her friends would be okay and eventually save the day.

It's okay for teaching purposes behalf for Twilight but I actually want to see Celestia take some affirmative in her role as the teacher.

Considering that she is a powerful alicorn who wields magic that is far greater than any other pony is capable of using--Luna and maybe Star Swirl are exceptions--if Celestia were to get involved in a situation personally that was truly dire, she would effectively resolve the problem on her own without any problems. It would mitigate the purpose of having other characters struggle and learn something valuable if she were to come in and solve things just like that.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but if a person wants to see how the writers feel about Princess Celestia, the episode "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?" will give a clear answer.
