I've been a diehard George Carlin fan ever since I snuck my dad's copy of FM&AM out of the house and listened to it with a friend of mine.  Some other favorites I've had are Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black, Bill Cosby (lots of his older stuff is quite funny), Richard Pryor, Steven Wright, Sam Kinison, and Bill Hicks.

I like comedians that can get pretty close to the mark. Not really a big fan of 'family friendly' comedians such as Michael McIntyre or Lee Evans.

 

Prefer those such as Jimmy Carr, Ricky Gervais, Sean Lock, Mitchell & Webb and most recently, Joe Wilkinson on '8 out of 10 Cats does Countdown' has me in fits of laughter.

My very favorite comedian is Adam Carolla. I really like his wry sense of humor and snappy improv skills; his podcast is especially great if you like listening to a guy complain in a comedic way. It's that off the cuff manner that really makes him awesome. You know that he's not just doing a bit or going off of written material.

Their comedy series 'Lano & Woodley' is absolute gold, and I wish I owned more of their works.

Personally, I find Dan Tosh to be a rude, narcissistic, uncaring, unsympathetic, imbecile with no taste in humor and even worse jokes. And if you've ever seen him do his own routines, he is absolutely terrible. Not funny in the least bit. I'd rather watch that hack Carlos Mencia over him.

I do believe that this thread has come back to life!

 

Eddie Izzard is by far my favorite stand-up comedian. Can't go wrong with a guy who dresses in drag, gets on stage, and then struts around in heels better than I ever could.

 

He also is a lot better at applying makeup than I am. Kind of jealous. How does he not get that purple lipstick on his teeth?
