Why was Queen Chrysalis such a jerk to everyone?

Well, it doesn't seem like they are native to Equestria given everyone's confusion when she revealed herself at the wedding before Cadence explained, so I would assume that they tried diplomacy, but were turned down after the ambassadors of each nation learned they fed on 'love' and were disgusted by the notion.

 

"Equestria has more love than any place we've ever encountered..."

 

And after so many failures, I assume she got fed up and decided to take things by force.

 

The implication that the Changelings were starving and desperately in need of food the way that they were bashing their heads into the barrier and turning themselves into living projectiles seems to be further evidence of this.

 

But, knowing by reputation how powerful Princess Celestia was, Chrysalis knew that she couldn't possibly take her on herself, especially in her weakened, hungry state.

 

Which is probably when she hatched the plan to kidnap and impersonate Cadence to feed of Shining Armor until the time was right.

That's an interesting thought. That Chrysalis wasn't thinking clearly at all because she was actually 'high' as soon as the plan actually kicked into gear. Following this idea, then what we saw *wasn't* the plan at all, it was the equivalent of Chrysalis staring at her hooves going 'Woah, I can see the bones...'

Consider every villain ever. If they all did the smart thing and just shot the hero through the head, it wouldn't be very entertaining (well, sometimes it is). So for the sake of the viewer, they have to defy all good judgement and throw him into some slow, convoluted trap instead so he can escape and the series can continue.

An emotional high isn't the same as a drug high so no, it wasn't the equivalent of that at all...Following that idea, what we saw was the plan, and she just screwed it up by being stupid.

Discord had no obsession. He fought Celestia and lost once upon a time but that's entirely irrelevant to anything he does. He doesn't cause chaos for revenge or out of bitterness. He does it because it's fun.

 

The lore surrounding the real-world mythology that Chrysalis is based on (changelings as well as an assortment of other creatures) would suggest she cannot actually feel love herself the way others do (hence the disguise and infiltration) so the constant "feeding" is done more out of a desperate unsateable desire than any real survival need. I'd imagine desperation can muddy a person's better judgement a good deal.

I was taking the concept and moving it to the next level. I was hoping that drawing the parallel between Chrysalis and a drug addict was so obvious that I didn't need to elaborate it further. Afterall, we're dealing with a creature that supposedly derives actual sustenance from emotion. The mythology of the fae changeling, the demonic succubae, and other 'emotional vampires' behave in very similar ways to drug addicts, as you say later:

The minor little detail that he was already up to these antics before Celestia beat him kind of contradicts your differing though...He may be capable of vindiction and payback but it's not the motivating factor in his actions. He just creates chaos for its own sake on account of being...Well, the literal embodiment of discord. At least until the idiot writers completely destroyed his character, anyway...

Maybe... that was actually her plan by sending Twilight to the caves. Remember how Chrysalis taunted Twilight in the caves? Perhaps her plan was for Twilight to actually find Cadance and then kill her! O_o

 

After all, the moment Twilight saw the real Cadance, she attacked her. Had Cadance not, in the nick of time, remembered the old secret hoofshake rhyme, Twilight could have easily have killed her. Then Chrysalis would be free to do whatever she wanted, and by the time that Twilight found out, she'd be so crippled with guilt from killing Cadance that she wouldn't be in a fit state to do anything to Chrysalis.

I have a theory about Chrysalis deep down actually being not that bad, but due to her species way of feeding and never finding someone who would truly want to love her after many many years, she might have gone mad with depression and power, and decided to invade the nation that had what she would consider a mockery to herself and destroy it: the fairly tale by the book perfect couple.

Looking at it at the angle of that theory, it makes more sense to me why she didn't act more cold and subtle, she was not just out to feed, she was desperate due to a obsession to make everyone else as miserable as she was. Driven to evil she didn't intend to ever face by being labeled as a monster, and therefor not being worthy of love in others eyes. Being labeled as a designated evil can do things to one's mind if it's fragile already.

Of course this is just a silly theory of mine and I bet the official explanation is something as simple as "she got annoyed because someone were about to spoil her plan, and that is it", though I find Chrysalis to be a interesting character and I like to think what she might have been like before.

I'd love to see a scene where Chrysalis takes somepony captive - like Twilight - and that pony tries to reason with her:

By making him susceptible to their inane little "children are fluffy retards who can't handle anything other than rainbows and unicorn shit" deus ex machina friend magic, they compromise his character. Unless it's all one big act and he pulls something crazy awesome later, he's ruined.

It's possible that Queen Chrysalis has had so little practice acting that she can't do it. If she was the queen, it's very likely she'd just sit around all day and eat. Notice how she looks more well-fed than her soldiers. This lack of practice however, would come back to bite her as she can't act. Even the Changeling drones put up better acts than Chrysalis.

 

Random note, Chrysalis was smarter in disguised form. At least she wasn't putting herself in a harm's way based on a bluff. Once Chrysalis was in her true form, she stands there babbling about how feeble everypony is while Cadence and Shining power up the shield. Would it have taken that much effort to turn around and incinerate them?
