I think it feels like ant othe fictional charcter using power, say DBZ for instance, It take lots of consintration to build up the ammount of magic needed to use any givin spell...

I think it's analogous to lifting something up. If you lift up a pencil, it'll be easy like a unicorn's levitation spell, so it wouldn't hurt. Lift up a 100lb weight and you'll be popping veins, and this we can say is equivalent to harder magic spells, so it could potentially hurt or put strain on the unicorn.

Gandalf was using magic in one part, and, it looked like it hurt. Now I know there is a difference between him and unicorns, but it just looked like it hurt. One scene from MLP Cutiemark Chronicles, Twilight looked like she was having trouble using the new powerful magic since she was a filly, and it looked like it hurts.

Interesting thought. In my opinion, the way Twilight strains sometimes when casting a spell for the first time indicates there is stress there. It might hurt, the way overstraining a muscle can hurt. It appears that when she casts a spell a second (or more) times, the stress is lessened, eventually reaching a point where it's easy and she barely needs to concentrate.

So if she overcasts, reaches for a spell too far outside her normal range without sufficient practice, or miscasts for whatever reason, she may indeed hurt herself.

Interestingly she has sometimes insisted that Spike also concentrate when she is casting a spell around him. This might mean she's distributing the stress between them, using a connection much like the Fantasy Role Playing game version of the 'familiar' trope.

I'd probably think it would have to do with how skilled that unicorn is with magic and the requirements it takes to pull off a certain spell. Look at all the times Twilight has done a really strenuous spell left her kind of unstable afterwards. So I think there is a certain limit if they push past their limit it is probably going to end them leaving in pain.

my own idea was that the unicorns used focused Aura ( life energy ) and the horn was used to focus, and cast it away from the body ... Aura builds on the head you know, when in deep thought/daydreaming/or... useing magic spells :P

As far as I'm concerned it became apparent that using magic definitely requires effort. I think it depends on the spell though. Twilight tends to show severe concentration and strain when using spells such as that time when she put the Ursa Minor back to sleep. She wasn't showing pain, but huge concentration and focus. Strain. Although, Shining Armor in A Canterlot Wedding was shown to have headaches as he used his magic for the protection spell. So, the way I see it, the level of magic has different effects on you. It could be pain or soreness, or strain and major concentration/exhaustion. It depends.

Levitation is something common to all unicorns and that we've seen them do with ease. I like to imagine that to them it feels just like using hooves/hands, right down to noticing texture and temperature, so it's possible to singe their horns lifting something hot. But weight doesn't seem to matter as Twilight expending no effort to harvest many trees worth of apples simultaneously or move Tom, so who knows. Complexity and unfamiliarity appear to be the only things that cause problems, and even then I've not seen any indication Twilight has ever been in pain, such as when she evicted that Ursa Minor. She just gets tired and out of breath. Much like if I was to run farther than I'm accustomed to.

Like others have said, it may or may not cause pain, but my thought was always that it was exhausting. Similar to meditating, it probably drains the unicorns mentally, causing them to feel more tired depending on the strength of the used magic. It would take concentration and loads of mental strength, perhaps the reason that unicorn foals cannot use magic yet.

I think that the stronger the magic, the more it hurts. I bet if you're just moving a pencil from one desk to another or somethin', it's just a slight pinch. But...if it's like, teleporting to...Manehattan or something. Yeah. I can imagine it'll hurt or make the pony tired.
