How does the fandom feel about a male character as an addition to the main cast?

I don't mean Flash Sentry, Big Mac, or Shining Armor. A real male character with development and a real perspective. A guy on the show that isn't a comical idiot, or a big brother character for Twilight to look up to. I mean, we already get that from the princesses who's sole purpose is to show up at the end of the episode and explain the moral to the mane characters. This character could bring his own perspective and story line. It would be interesting to see a different mind set from the ones that the female cast. What do you guys think? Would it be a good addition, or would it ruin the flow of the cast? Let's discuss.

Edit: I love Spike, and I'm not leaving him out here. I just feel as if he's less of a male perspective and more of a child's.

Okay, the fact that many people might tell you that it's not necessary to add a male character to the mane 6 aside, there already is a male main character... At least I see Spike as one.

Haha... Spike... ah, that was funny XD.

Tbh, short off ripping Starswirl out of the past (or him coming forwards). I can't see a male pony having a signifiant role in the story and at the name time not be related or be in relations of any of the main 6.

I wouldn't mind seeing a male character as a supporting character, but not a main character. There shouldn't be any more main characters in the show in my opinion -- we have enough, and the main characters are already set up, and have gotten lots of development. Adding another character to the main cast would just be odd. We have Spike, anyway. A male character as a recurring secondary/supporting character would be interesting though, and I wouldn't be against it. I'm not sure how they'd introduce a male character into the cast, but it would be nice to have another male character.

Yeah that's like a huge slap in the face to poor ol' spike...

But anyways OT

I do not think it would work over to well I mean think about it. The show all the way up unto this point has had the mane 6 and it has worked out just fine. I think if they up and added another male character *stallion - wise* it would bring problems and also I could not see it work personally. But if you can visualize it working out all the yay for you :P

We already have Spike who is a good character but the way he is written in some of his recent episodes has been a bit inconsistent. Adding one the main cast would be a bit much but I wouldn't mind having a few more stallions as secondary and supporting characters and elaborating on some of the stallions we have already seen in the show. I would especially like to see more of Big Mac, word is that they came up with an episode idea for Big Mac but that Hasbro turned it down which is a real shame.

This thread appears to be discussing MLP:FiM in some way, shape or form. Thus, it has been sentenced to Show Discussion.

We already have a male main character. He is kind, and sweet, and looks amazing in a maid outfit.

I hope you kidding... You kidding right? Tell me that you just kidding! :D

What is wrong with one of the characters finding a boyfriend? A lot of kids shows had romance in them. Baloo and Rebecca Cunningham got together on occasion, Golitah and the girl from Gargoyals became an item. Even Bonkers had a slight crush on Miranda.

Adding a new main character in a show is a sign that the show is dying especially if it's a shoehorned in male character. We already have 10 main characters all of them need at least 2 episodes, we don't need anymore characters.

Honestly no, it would require alot of extra time to develop them to any level close to the mane 6, and it wouldn't really make sense to throw a new character in.

It just wouldn't work out.

Spike is essentially the male main character, of course people seem to forget he is a main character at times, but he is one, and important because hes the male influence typically. If one is going to be present its most likely him.

Plus i actually quite like spikes Character, dunno why.

But i think the show is great as is, and adding any more characters will only cause things to mess up.

I guess personally as long as they didn't make him a super mushy love interest for one of the females, then I would very much enjoy seeing a male character. Then again calling them the mane 7 doesn't quite have the same ring to it but I guess I'd just have to get used to that.

The problem with a male character being added into an otherwise all-female main cast, is that it usually guarantees a romantic relationship between him and one of the main cast members.  Very few times, have I seen this not be the case (and most times where it isn't the case, it isn't very good).  And this isn't the male character's fault.  It's just a pattern you see in shows that's almost unavoidable.

That's not to say it can't work.  It can work, if done right.  I could see a male character and one of the mane 6 developing a romantic relationship, and this kind of thing has worked in other shows geared toward girls.  In fact, most of the shows it works best in, tend to be shows that are geared toward girls.  That in itself, is a scary prospect.

Either way, a male character would be a big risk that would almost certainly change the status quo.

Ouch, no love for Spike, huh?

He's not a comical idiot, he's actually had a lot of great moments of characterization on this show. I love Spike. Spike is both a child perspective and a male perspective rolled into one package deal.

I personally don't think adding a main male character just for the purpose of being male is a good idea. Why does it matter so much what a guy's perspective is? While the show may have been originally intended for girly girls, it's been designed with strong developed female lead characters that could easily serve as positive role models for both boys and girls. Why should the fact that they are girls and not boys even matter? Is the show not fine the way it is without adding some random boy pony?

It kinda bothers me that some bronies feel the need to request these sorts of things.
