Mario has spanned many genres of games from platformers to RPGs to racing games. I personally have more fun with Mario than I ever have with Sonic. And Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is one of the best games ever according to the wonderful research resource that I am.

Sonic's earlier games are great but he's lost steam over the years. I haven't played his most recent games though so I can't judge much on that.

 

Mario has had a great run for a while now, though I do think the New Super Mario Bros. line is getting a bit stale (2 of them were enough even if the Wii one wasn't too bad) there's still been plenty of splendid games.

 

Thus I prefer Mario.

I Like Starting Fights, So heres a classical fight. Who is better? Mario or Sonic. Although Mario saved Home Gaming, Sonic is still better!

Hmmm Mario games are more fun, but I like Sonics design a lot better.

Sonic is way better! Mario games are kind of boring, in my opinion. But I'm not one for defending my arguments with walls of text, so yeah.

Sonic, always. Sonic's always been better as a character and in design overall and the Sonic games are infinitely more fun than Mario games for the most part, only thing of Mario's I like more is the RPGs. Sonic's one and only RPG isn't exactly the best RPG out there though as a major Sonic fanboy I will admit to still loving it because it's Sonic but also because I'm a huge RPG nut. I haven't seen a whole lot of Mario's cartoons but between what I have seen of it and Sonic's cartoons I definitely like Sonic's more anyway. Story is far better in SatAM and in Adventures the comedy is funnier. I can admit Mario's cartoon is a little more original in design but overall it's still Sonic > Mario. I don't even know if Mario has ever had a comic but the Sonic comic is storytelling gold aside from the fact that it has to spread it's story arcs throughout multiple miniseries and stuff. Sonic has also always had better music, and not just because of Crush 40's final boss themes. Mario has had almost nothing that can match up to Sonic and the Black Knight's epic beyond proportions soundtrack.

Sonic for one main reason.

Sonic and Mario.

 

Two of gaming's most recognizable figures. They are liked by about any age category and it's no surprise. They both are very good games. But whether you like them both, most people usually like one more than the other, even if by a small degree or greater. It could be that you simply played one of them before the other and stuck with it or enjoyed the platforming of Mario or the speed of Sonic. Or it may be because you prefer one's music over the other. There are other factors that go into this, but you can mention those in your comments.

You see I'm a huge Sonic fan and love most of the games (the only one that was actually bad IMO was Sonic 06.) but I gotta say Mario's just better these days. The newer Sonic games are great, but man I've just had more fun playing the newer Mario games. When it comes to the older stuff, though, Sonic wins hands down.

 

Now, if you want TV shows and stuff like that Sonic also wins. Sonic had a few crappy TV shows (I don't care what anyone says SATM sucked) but I found a little bit of enjoyment in Sonic X. With Mario, all the TV shows sucked. Also the Sonic Comics are pretty bad, but I'm really enjoying the Megaman Crossover comic they're doing right now.

They are both legendary icons that deserve all the praise they've gone through to earn that recognition. they made one of the best games, characters, and developments!

 

But to me, it has to be... well, if it isn't obvious by the avatar I have, then it'll sure be a mystery! XD

No contest. Even ignoring who has the all around better games (especially as of late), and who it was that introduced me to video games, Mario is so uncool that he's cool. Sega tries too hard to make Sonic cool that he ends up being obnoxious.

 

Mario FTW.

I grew up on Mario, so I'm pretty biased. In addition, Mario has many many more games than Sonic, and alot more diverse ones at that. We have Mario Party, MarioKart, Mario RPGs, platformers, sports games, card games, and much more.

As you can tell on the screenshot, I am a huge Sonic the Hedgehog fan. When I was like 8, I thought PAL and NTSC would work in other countries. That's how I have a PAL game in my collection.

I understand where everyone comes from, but honestly I'm just a huge sonic fan.  Don't hate me, I just like the idea behind the hedgehog a lot better than an Italian plumber... 

 

I'm not taking into account any of the games, movies, shows, or w/e just looking at the concept and idea behind each character.

I did, however, really, really, really like Sonic when I was little. It was mostly because I fell in love with the idea of the Sonic universe in the 90's. A cool blue hedgehog who saved little animals from being encased in robots and forced to do the bidding of an insane yet brilliant madman who happens to look like an egg-shaped Teddy Roosevelt. What's not to love about that? Needless to say, it was disappointing to see them depart from such a unique setup to one that's more commonplace and generic. Dash Mobius with a vaguely Earth setup instead. The day that happened, the games weren't interesting anymore, in my opinion. Sure his games are getting better nowadays, but Mario's games have been consistently good, and in some cases better, throughout the years. Just my two cents.

Mario's been consistently good across main entries since the NES. I mean there's been a couple of hiccups but very few bad games. Most being the edutainment stuff from SNES and occasionally weak outsourced game like Mario Pinball Land (Which despite being a meh game had great graphics for GBA)

 

Sonic has been far more misses than hits post Sega Genesis. I think furries have helped sustain his fandom but for the most part his games couldn't find the same footing as Mario did as time went on.

 

Nintendo has sort of had a Pixar approach with Mario, making them for kids but so well-crafted they are acclaimed with older players. Sega seemed to adopt the me mentality. "Well kids like them"

 

One of the reason I like MLP because it is an anthro fandom BUT- the creators actually care about us.

I've always been a huge Sonic fan. I have the old genesis games and even the Genisis itself! I have many games from today that range from Soni Heroes to Sonic Generations. I still like Sonic after MLP taking over though lol.

It was a little hard to decide at first. I mean they both expound on both characters and the settings. The same thing happens in each of the games. With Mario, Peach gets kidnapped and everyone sends the plumbers to go get her. With Sonic, Eggman tries to team up with someone stronger but then ends up getting tossed into space. I chose Sonic because if any of you knew me, I am a huge Shadow the Hedgehog fan. BUT THAT'S THE ONLY REASON!!

Sonic the Hedgehog. The only Mario games I actually enjoyed was the Mario Party franchise. I just think playing Sonic is A LOT more fun to me.

Sonic has this hands down..if you go according to the mass variety of foes both have gone against it would appear even enough however if we look at the stain we call sonic 06 we can establish his ability to take down a god and defy the future, the other advantages is in team situations when it comes to allies Mario comes up short. Mario's number one ally is Luigi another plumer with identical abilities as mario himself whereas Sonic has the young fox tales 'miles' prowler. Tails may be only seven years old but possesses the ability of short ranged flight and massive intellect with know how rivaling that of robotniks. all In all sonic has a more versatile character not giving us a goody two shoes but an arrogant hero and while their rivals are both seeming duplicates with odd color schemes...sonic is literally against a demi god at all times..

 

Sorry when it comes down to it...abilities,work load, enemies,accomplishments and allies..Sonic has the clear upper hand in all catagories
