Where are you from and what is controversial there?

I live in Western Australia. Quite a few things are controversial here, but not the usual sorts. In no particular order:

  • "Boat People" (Asylum Seekers)
  • Carbon/mining taxes
  • An assortment of dumbass statements made by politicians

It's weird. Things like those get people really worked up here, but things like abortion and gay marriage don't seem to be very sensitive for most people.

I reside in Ohio and I don't necessarily pay attention to the news or what anybody does here so I'm a bit ignorant on the controversies here.

I know people seem to enjoy over-using drugs here and it's not very uncommon to see crimes in the state, but the apartments in which I live is actually fairly peaceful, as long as you ignore your loud neighbors who don't nothing except scream at one another.

I don't care for interacting with the residents in this state so I don't have much of an opinion of things going on around here.

Funny thing is, even being in Southern California, immigration isn't a very controversial subject here. I guess it's because generally the population doesn't mind it.

One thing that is a bit controversial, now that I think about it, is gang violence, what with the nearby city of LA being having a reputation for that. I can remember a few years back when there were reports of people shooting at passenger buses at night, and I was scared to death of going there.

I'm from northwestern Wyoming and literally everything is controversial. I'm not kidding or exaggerating either. You can't even talk about the weather without people trying to debate some fact of it

your job is to plant yourself like a tree next to the river of truth, and tell the whole world
"No, you move."

I live in Northern California, and it's really ethnically diverse in my area, so there's like no racism or anything here. No one is really homophobic or anything either, at least not that I can tell.

I live in Southern California and it is pretty much the same in that regard in most parts of California, homophobia and racism do exist in California but not as much as some other places. I grew up being exposed to many different cultures from a very young age and learned very quickly the simple fact that people are people no matter what their background. I was exposed to Italian culture through my Dad's side of the family who immigrated here from Italy and I was exposed to Irish, Filipino, Korean and other cultures from the church my family attended when I was growing up. And of course I was exposed to Mexican culture by living so close to the US-Mexico border. What I don't like about California though is how the state government leads the way in spending like drunken sailors on shore leave during happy hour and a lot of the nanny state stuff that occasionally slips by. As a populist leaning libertarian though I think I would rather live in California than in parts of the country where the "controversies" are based on gay marriage, evolution and other sectarian religious issues that the government has no business getting involved in.

I suppose the controversies nationwide are gay marriage but thankfully not nearly as much as it was before, abortion but also not quite as much. I think the really big ones though are the economy continuing to go down the crapper, unemployment, increased cost of living, wages and working conditions, health care and other various issues that hit people right in the pocketbook. All the unnecessary wars are still controversial but some of that fervor seems to have died down, I am seriously wondering where the anti war left has been since Obama took office. Obama is just as much of a warmonger as Bush if not more so and yet they seem to give him a free pass. And it is the same with the all the civil liberties violations and corporate welfare, bailouts and kickbacks. People are starting to wake up to the fact that both parties are completely bought and paid for but I don't they most of them realize the extent of the corruption.

I live in Southern California. Nothing is controversial there, because everybody is high as fuck.

Fixed it for you! I'm sure that this is what you meant. No need to thank me.

I'm from New Jersey.

Apparently, the most controversial things we have to deal with is if our governor should be stoned to death for delaying traffic on a bridge that... already has delayed traffic on it anyway...

Welcome to Jersey.

For the record I'm not one, just pointing it out. Although I haven't lived there for seven years so things may have changed.

I live in northern, rural Iowa.

Racism is still a huge problem here because most of the people living in this area are 60+ years old.

Lutherans vs. Catholics religious stigma is still around among some of the elders (this is a heavy Lutheran area).

Outsiders are for the most part not accepted :( ,

Gossip...it's a huge, bad problem (seriously, people around here think I'm a prostitute due to the point before).

Asian Beetles are a bane upon everyone's existence and Box Elders a bit less.

The Cops are not helpful to those without a well-to-do name,

Not having a well-to-do name makes you a nobody and thus no one will listen to you.

The county does not care for the roads (especially in winter) and there's a world of difference between road care in MN vs. Iowa.

Massive hog building setups are a problem, no one likes them and no one wants to work in them, and yet they are being built loser and closer to residential areas (which is a major health hazard).

Frack Sand Mining is a controversy not directly impacting our area, but it's too close to home for comfort for everyone.

Florida. Middleburg, to be a bit more specific.

Hmm... controversy... controversy... well, outside of the usual rape, sexism, racism crap the entire country has its own fair share of, there's nothing that particularly stands out. At least not in my area. Sorry. *shrug*

I'm from Denmark, we're a little country with a population of 6 million people in Northern Europe. Even though we have laws about judging people out from race, sexuality and some other stuff I wouldn't say that everybody follows it. And to be honest without being arrogant we're quite laidback and generally more openminded about more stuff such as sexuality but again it varies from person to person.

I live in London now, which is probably one of the most culturally diverse metropolitan areas in the world. So you have to be careful about what you say at all times.

I actually have friends from each of the following countries: United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, Cuba, Venezuela and Afghanistan. And I know a lot of people from other countries, some of them very obscure.

I live about thirty miles south of Seattle. My little town used to be called Slaughter and there was a hotel here called the Slaughterhouse.

The current governer of Washington State was also born and raised in my city.

That's about as much "controversy" as you'll get out of this little farm valley town.

Oh and apparently Sir Mix-A-Lot, the guy behind "I Like Big Butts And I Cannot Lie", has a mansion in this town.

I live in Acapulco, mexico and simply being even the slightest bit different is controversial. There is an abundance of drug usage, violence and corruption. In public schools teachers rarely attend classes and are severely unqualified. There is a lot of racism and prejudice to anyone who isn't Mexican, and even natives are mistreated.Being gay, bi or just not straight could get you attacked.

Well that is my rant about my current location, sorry for all the negativity but I really needed to vent.

Well, that's a very nice thing to say. It also makes me look bad, for anyone that reads that, and not my original post.

Please take your disrespect back to the 'Chon, where it has at least a small chance of being received well.

I hope to god I don't meet any people like you when I travel to the Northwestern United States this summer. I'm guessing you're contributing to the stereotype that people on the East Coast are rude and disrespectful.

I'm in Louisiana. Gay marriage, welfare, racism, Obama in general, and gun control are the big controversial issues.

Well I live in New York and people might find the city controversial because we are accepting of all races and nationalities and sexual orientations. But us who live in the city just really don't find controversy in much. I guess a lot of drugs and violence but, hey, its NYC.
