And he's not a baby; he's 15-16 years old, and she's around 22. He may be physically a baby dragon but physical appearance means nothing; he's still had 15 years to form the same kind of religious, political, cynical, and optimistic views on life that any mid-teen pony would have at that age. Given a few more seasons and I think they could have done a very nice relationship in the show without it being "icky".

 

I'd like to quickly disagree with this. Twilight has referred to him plenty of times as a baby, and it makes more sense for his age to be closer to 10, if not 7. In the episode where he grew due to greed, there was an early adolescence stage that was vastly more befitting for a 15-16 year old representation. My mind may be a little foggy, but I'm very certain his voice started cracking and dropping too.

 

 

On to the main topic, there doesn't seem to be any actual proof that Meghan McCarthy said what is in the OP. That's just some fanart, with text and McCarthy's name after it. I would take this claim with a grain of salt until some solid proof is presented.

Regarding his age, Spike was born during Twilight's test.

She was like 8, and now she must be around 18.

So Spike is now around 10 years old.

And I'm pretty sure Rarity is over 20 years old.

Poor Spike, his crush with Rarity will forever be unrequited because of the age difference and he will never be with Sweetie Belle because that would be interspecies-as shown to be believed by the writers in Equestria Girls given his 'dog' status.

 

Unless he finds a female dragon his age, it looks like he'll never catch a break.

He may not be technically a baby, but he's still a kid.....at 1:03:30 the writers say he's a child and shes an adult, and cuz of that it'd be "inappropriate". And I'll ask you the same question I ask everyone who has no problem with him being a teen or adolescent and being with her; would you have any problem with it if their genders were reversed, him being an adolescent-teen girl and she being a grown adult in her 20's or so?

 

Touche, and I agree there is a societal stigma for adult males dating teen females, and it's quite the opposite for adult females dating teen males. (The term "lucky guy" seems to come to mind.... )

But it turns out I've seen the former happen: My HS history teacher was dating a former student and they got married as soon as she turned 18. It raised eyebrows (including mine) but in the end everyone was cool with it (and he was in his 30's, not 20's ) so I guess due to that I could see the same thing happening for Spike. To be honest, I just want him to be happy, not get taken advantage of. Perhaps my main reason I want to see Sparity succeed is because, like many others, Spike gets so poorly written so often, and this is the one thing that seems to make him the happiest....

 

As for the writers in the panel considering him a kid: He's a pretty advanced kid, then. He's taken on all sorts of major responsibilities helping the Mane 6 and doing his best impersonations of Hugh Hefner when it suited him. If they want to say he's a kid then they should write him as a kid and not an adult in a kid body.

We now know what a 5-year old foal looks like, and Twilight looked like that when she got Spike. if Twilight's around the same age at the other Mane 6 then she must be 20-21 by now; thus Spike has to be at least 15-16 years old.

Sure, by a pony standard, he would be that age. And he has shown points of maturity.

However, he's still displayed and referred to as a child. Going by general lore, dragons physically age slower than the average person(or pony in this case). So even though he has been alive for that many years, his actual age takes in both his physical an mental attributes. Whilst not a baby, his body is still that of a child's, and has yet to reach adolescent stages.

But I digress, this is not the place for debate.

Well, I'm not surprised at the official stance on Spike x Rarity. That kind of a relationship between them would be illogical after all. The only thing really was deciding whether to let the speculation continue to run rampant or put the kabosh on it once and for all. But when one door closes another one opens. Rarity and Spike still have a special connection that deserves recognition. The kissy kissy stuff is nice but platonic love deserves to be celebrated just as much.   Or did I speak too soon?

 

 

 

That line on the picture is apparently not what McCarthy or anyone there actually said and it seems that the picture itself has already been taken down from derpibooru; I guess because it's nothing but a bait.

 

Even so, Sparity was never going to be developed to the shippers' liking no matter what.  Most ships are strictly silly fan originated concepts anyway.

Oh please. I'll believe it when they stop alluding to the ship at every opportunity/greenlighting stories where they save each other from an eternity of being monsters with their love.

 

Besides, I only ship them when Spike is older/after the series, so this affects nothing.

I never had anything for or against the pairing. I mean, I have a soft spot for Ken and Female protagonist from Persona 3. But it was inevitable this would be the end result. I mean, Spike is still a child. It's a young crush. If anything, I'd be a bit peeved to watch a "love at first sight" ACTUALLY happen in the show.

 

Still, I'm rather surprised they just came out with it and told the fanbase, straightforward, that the ship wouldn't happen. I mean, isn't she a critically-acclaimed troll, to some degree?

Then there is also the size differences when Spike grows up to Teen and Adult.

Rarity has only been attracted to Unicorns.
