Would you pay money to see The Ponytones?
Thespian replied to Azureth's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Well looks like i'll be the first debbie downer and say this. I really enjoyed the song they sung... but if you listen to it carefully, it is kind of badly edited together. There are sharp cutoffs and rearrangements. Meaning it wasn't true a capella. They sang notes and then reformed it to sound more sing songy. I might be looking into it too deeply, but I think the song would have been so much better if they just got all 4/5 singers in one room and recorded it all in as few takes as possible. NOW, to answer the original question, yes. I would love to see more of the Ponytones! -

What would be some crazy things FIM could do to shock you?

I only have a few problems with the whole derpy incident. I thought the original was completely fine. I understand where everyone who was personally involved with the change is coming from, but I feel the change caused more harm than good. The first and original recording has the best voices, the best reactions, and the best flow. The edit however really irked me in one particular way. They changed her to ditzy not derpy... that's fine. But rainbow dash's new lines make derpy seem like she actually is mentally challenged. It sounds like she is really frustrated but can't lash out because ditzy is mentally challenged and it would be really offensive if she said anything but calm, encouraging things. SO with that third fan made edit I feel overall the scene is saved. The voice is not offensive (I never thought it was but oh well), Dash is treating her like a normal pony, and the voices sound like they relatively belong together. The new voices did sound off even without context, but overall if by some miracle Hasbro allowed the fan made edit to take place, I think that would satisfy everyone. That's just my personal opinion.

From what I heard, it was 4chan that made it so popular. Whether it was all a joke at first or what, eventually people actually began to like it, and thus the memes like you said were born. Then came the artwork, the music, the fanfiction, and then finally the conventions. Once mainstream society began to notice it the haters were born and they spread its message to a whole new group of people who had never seen it. Then companies like hottopic and others began making more and more merchandise. Now the fandom is at its biggest and people are slowly beginning to be more accepting of it.

Stellar Eclipse (aka the OC in the Trade Ya episode)
Thespian replied to caramba2654's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I agree with Gilda. For special occasions like this where the OC fits into the show well enough as is, it is perfectly fine. It shows growth in the writers who are willing to do things like this and its super cool for the young man to be able to have that happen for him. I wouldn't want it to become a common thing, but this was definitely a cool experience. -
Rarity I think has had the best season. She has grown as a friend, as a pony, and as a sister. Even though she is still my least favorite pony, I like that she is becoming more than just a whiny, spoiled character. Rainbow Dash still holds herself back by being stubborn and hardheaded, but she has had some of the best episodes in my opinion. Pinkie Pie needs to tone everything down. You can be a clown and hyper, but when everyone scolds you for picking on your friends and for doing things against their will... then you need to think about yourself. Twilight Sparkle is now the most boring character. She doesn't seem to do ANYTHING anymore. I know the show has tried to become a 6 main pony show... but you have to admit that Twilight is supposed to be THE main character. Ever since she became a princess... she has become dull and lifeless. Bring back season 2 Twilight. Fluttershy has changed for the better. She is slowly becoming more confident in her own self and her abilities. She stood up to the breezies, became a singer (pinkie still leaves a bad memory for this episode), BUT is still her same character of being reserved and shy. Its one thing to grow, but another thing to bring it all back to what you were originally meant to do. Applejack has had too much screen time and has changed so many times as a character. Cold and heartless to discord, over protective to her sister, distrustful without proof (even though she was right) of Flim and Flam, and brutally honest to her friends. Also her family has had more screen time than is needed on my opinion. Spike has become a joke. Everything spike does is to make fun of his situation. "I made a lot of food for all the fillys. Oh, it isn't needed anymore. I wasted all my time doing that, laugh at me." "Oh look, I caused the breezies to be knocked off course, scold me." "I almost dropped my comic into the mud, Twilight save me!" "Oh Rarity is oblivious to my love for her... feel awkward and bad for me." Spike needs an episode where he grows up (I know he is a kid, but he hasn't always been this useless) and everyone takes him for granted instead of looking down on him. All of the other character likes Discord, Trixie, Derpy, Celestia, Luna, Shimmer(?), Bulk Biceps, The Mayor, Braeburn and the Bison, Maud (she is fairly new so that can be excused) Shining Armour, Cadence, Snips and Snails (have they even been in this season?) The Cake Family and their babies, Zecora, Gilda, and any other pony who has had an impact on the actual show need more screen time too. You can't just introduce a character and then abandon them. What do you guys and gals think?

Season 1 Episode 1. I don't really remember when I started watching the show in its production history, but I definitely had to wait for season 2 to premier. I was at my first semester of college when I saw people on a gaming forum with MLP themed signatures and CAI's. I decided to see why grown men were watching it. I didn't fully appreciate the show till the end of watching season 1. Didn't come out to anyone as a brony till halfway through season 3. I'm still pretty secretive but I am at my most comfortable with the show right now.

Something that I have a beef with in accordance to the writers is the following: The writers are afraid to take a chance. Redeeming Discord... hardly anything comes of it. Redeeming Trixie... nothing comes of it. Making Twilight an Alicorn/princess... very little has come of it AND she is now the least used main character. Discord needs to be around more often. Even if it is just small cameos like he floats above ponyville and yells at rainbowdash for interrupting his nap causing it to rain cats and dogs would be better than his 1/2 appearances per season. Also... now that he is free, what is he actually doing? Why was he redeemed in the first place if he is never around to show off that he is doing actual good? Trixie who? At least make her a background pony! And twilight becoming an Alicorn. It was made out to be this big, scary (which it was, many of us, including me had doubts about the shows future with this revelation), show changing thing and hardly anything worthwhile has come of it. If you are going to potentially flip the whole show on its head, stick to it. Besides the few episodes where all the fillys like Twilight because she is a princess and this last episode where she becomes some manager over the trade thing, her new transformation has been very useless. She has flown in a few episodes... woo. I feel that 1. It happened too early in the shows history and 2. was a flop that in the end has done more harm to her character than good. What do you guys think?

I feel like i'm one of the only people here who thinks there has been too much Apple Family this season. I think a lot of the characters are faulting this season. Pinkie is becoming more and more annoying with each episode. She is a spaz and is more destructive than helpful. Applejack and her family seem to be EVERYWHERE. Twilight has become dull and the least used character this season. The cutie mark crusaders are also becoming dull and overused. Spike has become as useful as a background pony. I feel like of all the characters this season, Rarity has probably had the perfect balance of everything (which is weird to say since she is my least favorite). Rainbow Dash has had her fair share of moments as well and Fluttershy falls in the middle of everything. She has had a few episodes about her, but overall has had very little growth beyond her singing. Of course this is all probably some backlash from previous season. The writers are taking what we complained about last season and "fixing" it this season. Most likely we wont see any real changes to the characters till season 5. Even though I may be bagging on some of the characters, I still enjoy seeing them and watching this show.

Scootaloo finding out she really can't fly. It could be heart wrenching to see her go through that pain but also heart warming to see her come to grips with it. It would speak out to a lot of people with disabilities in my opinion. Otherwise I think it's getting a little old that she still cannot fly.

I think the Mane Six and Discord should become friends HOWEVER, I don't want his appearances on the show to become sappy. He only is their friend because he doesn't want to spend eternity as stone. It would be awesome if Discord actually helped the Mane Six in some horrible problem with his own powers. I just don't want him to become the master of chaos who doesn't do anything chaotic and is completely nice.

Deus Ex Machina Is Being Increasingly Overused In The Show
Thespian replied to Shanks's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I think most people in this thread have got the right idea. 1. Its a kids cartoon show, the intended audience members aren't going to question or care about these sudden easy answers to their problems. Even though that might be considered "lazy writing", they are on a tight, heavily monitored (Big Hasbro is watching you) schedule. 2. They only have 22 minutes to accomplish an end goal. You have to make sure there are enough jokes, enough serious moments, enough morals, and it all wraps up within a 22 minute time-frame. Also there are shots that are there for viewing the background or transition scenes. They may only be 3-5 second shots but over an episode they can add up. 3. Everyone wants their favorite characters in the show as much as they can so they do bend the rules to allow that (fluttershy being in a competition even though she is very shy) AND writers like to throw nods to characters that have received a positive liking from the audience (even though all these character nods are because of us). I'm sure the writers could think of hundreds of new characters for every episode so that we don't get contrasting character developments, but since the audience latches onto specific characters they reuse those characters to please us. That's not to say this legitimately hasn't happened during the run of this series. I personally feel that, given the circumstances, the show has done a pretty good job covering their trails and making sure everything works out in the end.- 21 replies

Which of the Mane Six has the best looking Mane?
Thespian replied to Azureth's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I actually like pinkaminas mane, but mine has to be rainbows because for me it seems the artists do more with it. It isn't just there like Fluttershys, Raritys, Twilights, or Applejacks. I might be mixing up fan made things with the show, but it seems like rainbows is always in different positions when she does different things. -
Yes I feel pinkie does often get the short stick in these situations, but as others have said she brings it upon herself. It's like the boy who cried wolf. If she is silly and nonsensical 999 out of 1000 moments in her interactions with her friends, you wouldn't really pay attention after a while either. However, just because she is a goofball doesn't mean she needs to be ignored entirely either. I'm lighthearted most of the time and people don't take me all that seriously. However, once my mood darkens people get worried over me and begin to take me more seriously. The rest of the Mane 6 should just as well and after a while they usually do. Now this is a cartoon and I would say 90% of the time this stuff happens it's because it is used to fuel the plot. For the other 10% I can say it's just a momentary lapse of judgement on the mane 6's part. In the end, everything always does end up in the right, somehow.

Well to be fair it wasn't just over sensitive people that made the change. The main director/writer or someone at the time of that episode has a special needs child and so was very sensitive to the complaints people were having for the incident. Since she knew what it was like to be the parent of a kid who is probably bullied for who he is and possibly called retard/stupid/derpy she decided that it was for the best. I understand where she is coming from and can sympathize with her, but I personally would not have changed it.

This is just guessing, but I thought I read that one of the writers of the show confirmed that the two shooting stars applejack sees in that one episode are her "Parents". They died and that was just a reminder that they are still looking after Applejack, Big Mac, and Applebloom... just not on the same plane of existence.
