Do you like listening to depressing songs when depressed?

Yep, no doubt. Counter intuitive, but oddly effective for getting over those feelings. I know someone already posted something about the research done on the subject, but for me it's like it the music connects to you, sort of like when you have someone that will listen to all your troubles. It's like you internalize the sadness, wallow in your depression, soak it all in and, ultimately, accept it.

I've tried listening to happy music while depressed and it feels, well, fake. That clash pretty much just reminds me of how depressed I am; it probably would have the opposite of the intended effect on me.

Me? Depressed? :blink: ... Well it doesn't happen very often, like, at all, but when it does, I don't really do a lot of music listening. Instead I tend to just lie down on my bed and think about it. If I do happen to turn on some music, it would just be my normal playlist, which doesn't really have any 'depressing' songs as far as I know. More of the opposite in fact. :) So to answer, nope.

If I'm depressed, it goes a little like this.

* blasts five finger death punch*

* convert depression into regret, and then regret into anger ( that doesn't sound healthy, but it works with the next steps)*

* get pumped*

* drive like a maniac to the local gym *

* work out frustrations *

* go home and shower *

* sleep.*

It works. But it won't without the music. Something about it.. It's like a catalyst. That final push. I am a metalhead and listen for enjoyment, but if I get depressed, I go work out and I feel better.

In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God, hovering above? At least it is true, that man has no control... Even over his own will.

It depends on the type of melancholy I'm having at the time, like a typical bit of the blues I might just listen to something like this

or this

Although if I really get in a bad place I have to "power through it" as it were so I listen to something like this

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

Being someone that battles depression at a near constant rate, I do this a lot. Psyclon Nine is usually my go-to group for songs like that, but I just love that group anyways. I have the song 'Rusted' on my profile, it describes how I feel about myself pretty well. Type-O-Negative has plenty of great songs that will satisfy anyone that wants music that will accompany their not so favorable mood. Everything Dies is one of my favorites of theirs, very relatable of course.

I like to listen to songs that reflect what I am feeling inside or if I am going through something. Music has a tendency to help me relax and focus off of whatever is bothering me.

It is for me a relaxing escape from all worries and trouble. Music is like a friend when I do not have anyone. That is why I love music so much as I do.

Yes because it fits my mood. And listening to happy songs when depressed makes me feel like "Dang it! The singer is feeling happiness and I'm not" at times.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

Sometimes I do try to help myself and listen to upbeat music that could raise my spirits, but there have been days where I loop some depressing music to make sure I know what I'm feeling, or to make it worse, if I feel I'm too calm about something.

Like a lot of people, my musical tastes change depending on my current mood. I don't really like to deny whenever I'm feeling down, and while I won't go around saying how depressing everything is and making a big melodrama of it all, I will generally change my current atmosphere to fit the mood, and the biggest contributor to that is of course my music. I personally think it helps to just let yourself be sad when your feeling sad, don't keep the emotions bottled up. You will inevitably be upset over something at any point in your life, and when you are I feel it's best to just accept it.

Yep. I don't want to hear upbeat songs when I feel depressed. It's kind of insulting to me. I wouldn't say listening to sad music makes me feel better, but it doesn't make me feel worse.

I listen to music with pretty much any kind of lyrics in any kind of mood, and I might sing along to it as well if I'm alone. Sometimes I seek out music to match my mood, but mostly I just listen whatever I have in my head that day.

I don't know if I like listening to sad music, but it is what I usually do when I'm feeling sad or even a little depressed. I've never really questioned why though, I guess it helps me get the sad out of my system quicker.

I listen to any music and yes, even depressing songs. I think some depressing songs are very nicely made.

Yes, I have anxiety issues where my mood can change rapidly due to small events. Sad/Calming music really makes me feel better.

This is one of my favorites to listen to when I'm upset, it's very relaxing and usually calms me down.

Probably doesn't count as depressing, but I've been taking many long walks at midnight while listening to this as I contemplate my life
