So I have never been a fan of anime. I don't like how the art looks (any style of anime)  and all the movies and shows I have watched that were anime I have not liked. I'm not hating or anything, I don't care if anybody else likes anime, lots of my friends are MASSIVE anime fans. I am just wondering if anybody else feels the same way?

I don't like anime much either. I do have a few anime movies. But I'm a big fan of cartoons, and I have tried to like anime. I like the drawing style. But what I don't like about anime is the fact that THEY NEVER MAKE ANY SENSE!

Movie after movie, show after show, I will watch, and everything is going fine, story is interesting. Then near the end, everything jumps the shark and goes insane. Japanese story telling and plot is so bizarre that I can't get into it.

Case in point: One Piece. When I saw it on Cartoon Network (back when they used to show cartoons) I thought, "Oh cool, a cartoon about pirates." Then I saw parts of the show... Yeah, I don't like anime much.

First off, I hate the way anime looks.

The spiky hair and the fact the nose is about the size of a marble.

Also the eyes are way too big.

That applies mostly to anime girls though.

Second, strong violence, sexual themes, and gory content seem to be abundant within the fandom.

Third, I can NEVER understand the f***ing storyline.

Lastly, The fanboys... do I even have to go into detail about that one?

There is an over fascination with Japanese culture and anime in particular. I don't understand this. Is it just because they are different, yet westernized and therefore the cultures are compatible in the right ways? Why do so many non Japanese people have this fascination? It almost seems patronizing and insulting. I would feel weird if there was a group of Japanese tourists mimicking American culture, spouting catch phrases and slang. I guess I would be flattered, but it is still weird.

Like when non Japanese fan boys/girls visit Japan, dress up in traditional Japanese garb, and geek out about the sites.

It would be like someone from Japan dressing up as a cowboy and giving lessons on how to speak American. "See you rater arrigator is a traditionar American greeting." Okay, sorry for the sterotypical accent, but I'm a fan of engrish.com

Are there any Japanese bronies here who have an opinion on that?

The main complaint of mine would be the storylines..  Many of them start off strong and then have like.. 500 plot twists which half of the time don't even make sense.  I wish the writers would adopt more western-style literary structure.

I've kinda fallen out of anime, aside from ones I've seen before.

Also like to point out, those anime cliches, were around before anime picked them up. As for fanboys, I've only ever seen Gundam and DBZ ones be really obnoxious...and which ever mainstream one is big.

Well to be fair, America has had a fascination with the Far East in general for the past hundred years. Early on there was an interest in Eastern religions, which was rekindled, in a form, in the 60's. Next decade in martial art films, which has never gone away ( e.g. Kung-fu Panda ). Then after that came Anime. Americans will do it with other countries quite often, for T.S. Eliot it was England for a famous example.

I think in the case of the fascination with Japanese culture is that Anime fans are as common on the Internet as goldfish in a pet store. So that might be part of it. Another factor worth noting is that for a long time most of the popular kids shows were from Japan, such as Pokémon. So perhaps there are a number of psychological factors that play into that. If a child watches cartoons from a specific country other than his own most of his childhood, it would seem very likely for them to take a great deal of interest in that countries culture later in life. As they may very well feel more of a connection with that countries culture (wether they actually understand it right is another matter ) as opposed to their own. If I grew up hearing stories that took place in forests, I might well wish to move to a forested area in adulthood or at least vacation there.

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

It's not something I'm big on.  I was crazy about anime in high school.  Then I went to college for animation and it gave me a hard, scrutinizing eye for a lot of things anime does/doesn't do.

Plus it's a very inbred style; i.e. little visual variance from one property to another; with only a small handful that really stand out.  You could very easily mix and match characters from dozens, perhaps hundreds, of different anime and they wouldn't look at all out of place with each other.

And I'll agree on the story-telling matter.  When I was in my teens, it was like, "Oh this is so complex and deep and intelligent."  Now, it's like, "Wait, no it isn't.  It's needlessly complicated."  A lot of complexity for complexity's sake, with no thematic value to the overall plot.  .hack//SIGN is probably the guiltiest culprit of this I remember watching.

Though in anime's defense, the 'big eye' complaint just doesn't make sense to me.  That's really not an anime thing, it's a cartoon thing.  How many cartoons, no matter where they're from, have realistically proportioned eyes?  Simpsons characters' eyes make up about a third of their head.

One of my relatives took a "history of animation" class at their uni and they said that a lot of anime was influenced by western cartoons O.o

This is true.  Osamu Tezuka, considered the 'father of manga', was heavily inspired by Disney films.

To be totally accurate, he wasn't single-handedly responsible for the existence of anime, but many many Japanese animators were/are inspired by Disney and other western productions too.

EDIT: And I will always love Dragon Ball to death.  Because it's so bad/awesome.

@ErBoi There are indeed a number of Anime that are flat out pretentious, Neon Genesis Evangelion comes to mind (which I only learned things about it past the initial TV series, to make fun of it :P ). Although it seems there are a number of big Hollywood films that seem to make me say, "I think I saw this almost exact theme done in an old Anime once. "

Okay guys, you just made Lunatic post in this thread. What have you done. -Unleash Wrath of a thousand suns-

E-herm.... I can't say I dislike Anime at all. Sure, there are quite a few Animes that I didn't like that much (For example that Madoka Series everyone goes crazy about...), but to state that Anime is full of gore and violence, you probably only watched around 2% of Anime in total.

->

Also I just don't like the harsh violence and gore I usually see in anime shows and movies.

The art style in Anime can differ quite a lot depending on it's genre. While some animes concentrate on a "cute" aspect to fit younger audiences, there are several animes that look more mature compared to the younger ones, such as Death Note, which many of you probably know.

As for storyline, I agree, some animes have some insane storylines which are simply ridiculous or insane to begin with, but I can't remember seeing hundreds and thousands of plot twists ever, unless it's something like Dragon Ball and Freiza being like "This isn't even my final form, bla bla"

I can usually goof off and enjoy Anime because the Anime I usually watch is not that complex but more focused on comedy. I can see myself easily laughing or even crying at a certain point in Anime, because you get to love the characters and their "Catchphrases".

Again, there are quite a few Animes that start completely innocent but end up becoming quite violent/gory, for example a certain School Anime, where everything seems normal until the last episode where you get completely trolled... which I actually liked because the protagonist deserved it (Evil Lunatic is evil).

Uhm... where was I? Oh yeah... if you don't like Anime, it's alright, but to state that Animes are bad simply because some mainstream animes didn't get your interests is not right. There are thousands of Animes out, sure, some of them are terrible, hell I won't even talk about that Supernatural Animation I found one day where you can see the Characters Sam and Dean Winchester being spoken by Japanese which is, in my opinion, just wrong and terrifying. And I prefer the actual series by far... There's really something for everybody in Anime if you give them a chance, but if you are already biased about them, I recommend not trying because your brain already tells you they're bad to begin with.

On to the fanbase... uhm... do I need to go into that? The fanbase of any fandom has it's dark sheep, there's nothing to it really. Outsiders only see the bad side of a fanbase, it's similar with MLP as many and many bronies are said to watch "pony porn", but really, that's a vast minority. It's the same with Anime while there are a significant number of animes, while only a few Animes are used for "bashing" a community.

That being said, threads such as "Anybody doesn't like this thing as well?" Only end up being offensive and eventually you will find fanboys defending it, it's just not a good topic to discuss because it has bashing tendencies. This thread proves it basically.

EDIT: I just realized the title got changed. Well played. lol

Well ok.

If this is the case I've probably seen only one genre of anime.

Hmm...

Well alright, I'm not going to make any quick judgements until I've seen more.

I really like Dragon Ball and Z. I grew up with it and I can't help but love it even now. But other than that I really don't like anime all that much. I'm sure if I looked more I could find some more anime I like, but I just don't really feel like it. To be fair though I'm really picky with almost any kind of entertainment and don't tend to like that many things.

I do really like some video games that have an anime styling though. Not sure exactly what it is that makes them better but anime style in video games just looks more interesting to me. It's kinda odd.

I'm not so massive on it myself, nor cartoons for that matter.

Though I have enjoyed animes such as Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji) and the like.

When it comes to any show really, it's a lot to do with whether or not it is aesthetically pleasing in some way or really grabs me. Same goes for any show whether it's cartoon, drama, anime, etc.

I used to like anime a lot. Like a whole lot, I guess I was what you would call a fully fledged 'weeaboo' at the age of around 11-12. I still enjoy anime now, although I usually don't have the patience now to sit though countless episodes of an anime in order. Plus not many animes out there now really stand out to me. There have been some animes that I've loved, and some that I've hated, but I can agree that it doesn't deserve all the praise it gets. I find many animes use the same boring cliches and the animation, while beautifully drawn, is more limited than your typical Western animation. Nevertheless I still watch anime from time to time and I can still find series I like.

I'm guessing you're talking about School Days? Don't remember much from it except for that ending, dear god that ending. Scarred. For. Life.

A medium with so much potential that was finally making waves in the west.

Unfortunately it's being polluted with so much incest / pedophilia themes that it's now moving backwards on the path of global acceptance.

I've always been more of the western cartoon guy.

The art style doesn't get my attention.

I'm more into abstract/humor themes.

The only ones I liked was the MegaMan OVA and Bobobo.

Oh, and MLP:FiM (I'm going THIS FAR.) is still my most favorited cartoon.

The end.

I didn't want to name it! xD Oh well, I liked the music that played in the end but aside from that... mindfuck.

One anime that I really loved was "Darker than Black", great anime, really enjoyed it.

My drawing style is kind of anime-ish when I draw pony characters..

I like some anime but in general I'm not a huge fan of it. I grew out of Pokémon so long ago, now I'm in One Piece, Sword Art Online, and Naruto: Shippûden.. that's it, basically. I used to like Bleach but they dragged it out so there's not many anime I can say I 'like'. I'm interested in Fairy Tail,  however.
