Apparently Internet Memes really HAVE broken the 4th wall now...I went to Sunday School one day and saw the word "DERP" on the chalkboard. :wau:

First, I'm wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too old to be anything even close to an edgy fedora tipping hipster so with that said I'll go on.

The first time I remember seeing LOL used, anywhere, was back around 1989 or 90 on Chicago BBS (If you don't know what a BBS is feel free to ask me.) The first time I ever saw it used on the Internet was around 92 or so. I've typed it into chat, in E Mails and on various forums more times than I could possibly count, much less remember but, as much as I've used it in that way, I never did actually say it.

Still, it's funny because words like this eventually find their way into a standard Dictionary once they come into common enough use. I don't know if LOL has made it into a dictionary, yet (I'll have to check) but I imagine that, if it hasn't, it won't be long before it does.

Update: Well, this's no surprise to me at all but guess what? After a very short Google search I did find LOL in the dictionary. Miriam Webster's dictionary to be exact. You can see it listed here. LOL!

Only as a joke. Like, if I'm imitating myself or someone else texting. But I never seriously say "lol" to signify mirth.

I still dont think id even use it as a joke i find saying lol odd in real life... LOL but thats jus me

Not in the way meant here, anyway. The Dutch word for fun is actually 'lol', so I sometimes use it sarcastically, but I don't use it as an exclamation or anything. Hell, I try not to use it online either, although sometimes I slip up.

Yeah I say it all the time, it's quite embarrassing because I consider it a 'Squeaker' thing to do.
